It is narrated from Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) that when Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) fell ill with her final illness, I used to take care of her during those days. During her illness, one day she was quite cheerful. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went out for some work, so Sayyida (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Mother! Please prepare water for me to bathe." I prepared water for her to bathe, and she performed a very good bath. Then she said: "Mother! Please bring me my new clothes." I brought her new clothes, which she put on. Then she said: "Mother! Please lay my bed in the middle of the room." I did as she asked. She lay down facing the Qibla and placed her hand under her cheek. Then she said: "Mother! I am about to pass away now. I have already bathed, so no one should remove my clothes to bathe me." Thus, she passed away right there. When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came, I informed him of Sayyida's (may Allah be pleased with her) passing.

Sayyiduna Urwah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), after the passing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), demanded from Amir al-Mu’minin Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he give her share from the property of Fay’ left by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said to her that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Our inheritance is not distributed among heirs. Whatever we leave behind is charity.” Upon hearing this, Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) became upset and broke off communication with Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). This continued until her death. Urwah says that Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) lived for six months after the passing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
