Hadith 11364
Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would sometimes fast continuously for several days, to the extent that it would be said that it seems he will not leave fasting now. But sometimes, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would not fast for a long period except for two days in a week, and he would not fast as many voluntary fasts in any other month as he would in the month of Sha’ban. I asked: O Messenger of Allah! When you start fasting, you do not stop, and when you stop, you do not fast except for two days in a week? He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Which two days? I replied: Monday and Thursday. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: On these two days, the deeds of people are presented before Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and I like that my deeds are presented before Allah while I am in a state of fasting. I asked: Do you not fast as many voluntary fasts in any other month as you do in Sha’ban? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The month between Rajab and Ramadan, that is, Sha’ban, is such a month that people are heedless of it, whereas in this month, deeds are presented before Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and I like that my deeds are presented before Allah while I am fasting.
Hadith 11365
It is narrated from Abdullah bin Shaqiq that he asked Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about the voluntary fasts of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: To my knowledge, in whichever month the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) observed (voluntary) fasts, he would also leave some days without fasting, and in whichever month he did not fast, he would still observe some fasts in it. This remained his practice until his passing.
Hadith 11366
Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would sometimes fast so frequently that we would say he will never stop fasting, but then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would leave fasting for such a long period that we would think he will never fast again. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite Surah Bani Isra'il and Surah Az-Zumar every night.
