In this state, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and seeing this scene, he said: O Prophet of Allah! If you (peace and blessings be upon him) could have a slightly softer bed made, it would be better. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What do I have to do with the world? My example and the example of the world is like that of a rider who travels in intense heat and, at some point during the day, rests under the shade of a tree, then leaves it and moves on.
Hadith 11333
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was lying on a bed made of date-palm trunks. Under his head was a leather pillow filled with date-palm leaves. Some companions came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in this state, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) also arrived. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed his side, and Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw that there was no cloth between the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the ropes of the bed, and the marks of the ropes were imprinted on the side of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Seeing this scene, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Umar! What has made you weep?" He replied: "By Allah! I am weeping because I know that you are far more honored in the sight of Allah than Kisra and Caesar. They live a life of luxury in this world, and O Messenger of Allah! Your condition is as I see it." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you not pleased that for them is the world and for us is the Hereafter?" He said: "Why not." The Prophet said: "Then so it is."
