It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the moon was split into two parts, to the extent that people saw it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bear witness.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the people of Makkah asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for a miracle, so in Makkah the moon was split into two twice. Then Allah Almighty said: {اقْتَرَبَتِالسَّاعَۃُوَانْشَقَّالْقَمَرُوَإِنْیَرَوْْاآیَۃًیُعْرِضُوْاوَیَقُولُوْاسِحْرٌمُسْتَمِرٌّ} … The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split. Yet whenever they see a sign, they turn away and say, “This is passing magic.” Allama Abdur Rahman Mubarakpuri, in the commentary of Tirmidhi, Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi (vol. 4, p. 191), and Hafiz Ibn Hajar, in the commentary of Sahih Bukhari, Fath al-Bari (vol. 7, p. 183), after considering other narrations, have given preference to the view that the meaning of “martain” is “fiqatayn,” i.e., the moon was split into two pieces, not that it was split twice. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jubair bin Mut’im (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the time of the Prophet, the moon was split into two parts; one part was visible on this mountain and the other part on that mountain. The disbelievers said: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has cast magic upon us, but some people said: If he has cast magic upon us, he does not have enough power to cast magic upon all people.
