بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي خَاتَمِ النَّبُوَّةِ الَّذِي بَيْنَ كَتِفَيْهِ ﷺ
Chapter on What Has Been Reported Regarding the Seal of Prophethood Between His Shoulders ﷺ
Hadith 11151
عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرَبٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ سَمُرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ خَاتَمًا فِي ظَهْرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَأَنَّهُ بَيْضَةُ حَمَامٍ زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ وَلَوْنُهَا لَوْنُ جَسَدِهِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I saw the Seal of Prophethood on the blessed back of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), it was like a pigeon’s egg. In one narration, it is mentioned that its color was like the color of his body.
Hadith 11152
عَنْ عَاصِمٍ الْأَحْوَلِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ سَرْجِسَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَكَلْتُ مَعَهُ مِنْ طَعَامِهِ فَقُلْتُ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقُلْتُ أَسْتَغْفِرُ لَكَ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ أَوْ قَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ قَالَ نَعَمْ وَلَكُمْ وَقَرَأَ {وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنْبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ} ثُمَّ نَظَرْتُ إِلَى نُغْضِ كَتِفِهِ الْأَيْمَنِ أَوْ كَتِفِهِ الْأَيْسَرِ شُعْبَةُ الَّذِي يَشُكُّ فَإِذَا هُوَ كَهَيْئَةِ الْجُمْعِ عَلَيْهِ الثَّآلِيلُ وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ وَرَأَيْتُ خَاتَمَ النُّبُوَّةِ فِي نُغْضِ كَتِفِهِ الْيُسْرَى كَأَنَّهُ جُمْعٌ فِيهَا خِيلَانٌ سُودٌ كَأَنَّهَا الثَّآلِيلُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Sarjis (may Allah be pleased with him), who says: I presented myself before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I ate food and drank water with him, then I submitted: O Messenger of Allah! May Allah forgive you. Asim says: I asked Sayyiduna Abdullah whether the Messenger of Allah also prayed for your forgiveness? He said: Yes, he prayed for my forgiveness and for all of you, the people of faith, then he recited this verse: {وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنْبِکَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِینَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ} … And seek forgiveness for your sins and for all believing men and women. (Surah Muhammad: 19) Then I saw the soft bone of the right or left shoulder of the Prophet (there is doubt in Shu’bah regarding this), it seemed as if flesh was gathered there like a closed fist and there were moles on it. In another narration it is stated: I saw flesh near the soft bone of his left shoulder like a closed fist, that was the Seal of Prophethood, and there were black moles on it, like those moles appear.
Hadith 11153
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَرْجِسَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ قَالَ تَرَوْنَ هَذَا الشَّيْخَ يَعْنِي نَفْسَهُ كَلَّمْتُ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَكَلْتُ مَعَهُ وَرَأَيْتُ الْعَلَامَةَ الَّتِي بَيْنَ كَتِفَيْهِ وَهِيَ فِي طَرَفِ نُغْضِ كَتِفِهِ الْيُسْرَى كَأَنَّهُ جُمْعٌ يَعْنِي الْكَفَّ الْمُجْتَمِعَ وَقَالَ بِيَدِهِ فَقَبَضَهَا عَلَيْهِ خِيلَانٌ كَهَيْئَةِ الثَّآلِيلِ
(Second Chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Sarjis (may Allah be pleased with him), who, presenting himself, said to the people: Do you see this elder? I spoke with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I had the honor of eating food with him, and I saw the sign that was between his (peace and blessings be upon him) shoulders. It was near the soft bone of his left shoulder, like a closed fist. Along with this, he showed by closing his fist. Upon it were moles, like small spots.
Hadith 11154
عَنْ عَتَّابٍ الْبَكْرِيِّ قَالَ كُنَّا نُجَالِسُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ خَاتَمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الَّذِي كَانَ بَيْنَ كَتِفَيْهِ فَقَالَ بِأُصْبُعِهِ السَّبَّابَةِ هَكَذَا لَحْمٌ نَاشِزٌ بَيْنَ كَتِفَيْهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
It is narrated from ‘Itab Bikri, who says: We used to sit in the gathering of Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) in Madinah Munawwarah. I asked him about the Seal of Prophethood between the shoulders of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He pointed with his index finger and explained that it was like a raised piece of flesh between his shoulders. ! In some books of hadith, at this place, the narrator is Ghiyath instead of ‘Itab. Hadith 11155
حَدَّثَنَا عِلْبَاءُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زَيْدٍ قَالَ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ اقْتَرِبْ مِنِّي فَاقْتَرَبْتُ مِنْهُ فَقَالَ أَدْخِلْ يَدَكَ فَامْسَحْ ظَهْرِي قَالَ فَأَدْخَلْتُ يَدِي فِي قَمِيصِهِ فَمَسَحْتُ ظَهْرَهُ فَوَقَعَ خَاتَمُ النُّبُوَّةِ بَيْنَ إِصْبَعَيَّ قَالَ فَسُئِلَ عَنْ خَاتَمِ النُّبُوَّةِ فَقَالَ شَعَرَاتٌ بَيْنَ كَتِفَيْهِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: Come near to me. I came near to him, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Insert your hand under the shirt and pass it over my back. So when I inserted my hand into his (peace and blessings be upon him) shirt and passed it over his back, the Seal of Prophethood came between my two fingers. Then when he was asked about the Seal of Prophethood, he said that it was some hair between his shoulders.
Hadith 11156
عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ قُرَّةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي رَهْطٍ مِنْ مُزَيْنَةَ فَبَايَعْنَاهُ وَإِنَّ قَمِيصَهُ لَمُطْلَقٌ قَالَ فَبَايَعْنَاهُ ثُمَّ أَدْخَلْتُ يَدِي فِي جَيْبِ قَمِيصِهِ فَمَسِسْتُ الْخَاتَمَ ثُمَّ قَالَ عُرْوَةُ فَمَا رَأَيْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَلَا ابْنَهُ قَالَ حَسَنٌ يَعْنِي إِيَاسًا فِي شِتَاءٍ قَطُّ وَلَا حَرٍّ إِلَّا مُطْلَقَيْ أَزْرَارِهِمَا لَا يَزُرَّانِهِ أَبَدًا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qarah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I presented myself before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) along with a delegation from Banu Muzaynah and we pledged allegiance to him. The buttons of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) shirt were open. When we had pledged allegiance, I put my hand inside the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) shirt and touched the Seal of Prophethood. ‘Urwah says: I saw Mu‘awiyah and his son Iyas in both cold and hot weather, that they always kept the buttons of their shirts open and never closed them.
Hadith 11157
عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ قُرَّةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَاسْتَأْذَنْتُهُ أَنْ أُدْخِلَ يَدِي فِي جُرُبَّانِهِ وَإِنَّهُ لَيَدْعُو لِي فَمَا مَنَعَهُ أَنْ أَلْمِسَهُ أَنْ دَعَا لِي قَالَ فَوَجَدْتُ عَلَى نُغْضِ كَتِفِهِ مِثْلَ السِّلْعَةِ
(Second Chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qurrah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I presented myself before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and sought permission to place my hand inside his shirt. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was supplicating for me. When I was touching the blessed body of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), this action of mine did not prevent him from supplicating for me; that is, he (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to supplicate for me. I felt a raised area near the soft bone of his shoulders, like a protruding muscle.
Hadith 11158
عَنْ أَبِي رِمْثَةَ التَّيْمِيِّ قَالَ خَرَجْتُ مَعَ أَبِي حَتَّى أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَرَأَيْتُ بِرَأْسِهِ رَدْعَ حِنَّاءٍ وَرَأَيْتُ عَلَى كَتِفِهِ مِثْلَ التُّفَّاحَةِ قَالَ أَبِي إِنِّي طَبِيبٌ أَلَا أَبُطُّهَا لَكَ قَالَ طَبِيبُهَا الَّذِي خَلَقَهَا قَالَ وَقَالَ لِأَبِي هَذَا ابْنُكَ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَمَا إِنَّهُ لَا يَجْنِي عَلَيْكَ وَلَا تَجْنِي عَلَيْهِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Rimtha Taymi, may Allah be pleased with him, who says: I set out with my father and reached the service of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. I noticed the effect of henna color on his head. I saw a place near his shoulder that was raised like an apple. My father said: I am a physician; should I not perform surgery and remove it? The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Its physician is Allah, Who created it. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to my father: Is this your son? My father replied: Yes. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Beware! He will not be held accountable for your crime, nor will you be held accountable for his crime (i.e., each will be responsible for his own actions).
Hadith 11159
(وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا) قَالَ انْطَلَقْتُ مَعَ أَبِي نَحْوَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمَّا رَأَيْتُهُ قَالَ أَبِي هَلْ تَدْرِي مَنْ هَذَا قُلْتُ لَا قَالَ هَذَا مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ فَاقْشَعْرَرْتُ حِينَ قَالَ ذَلِكَ وَكُنْتُ أَظُنُّ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَيْءٌ لَا يُشْبِهُ النَّاسَ فَإِذَا بَشَرٌ ذُو وَفْرَةٍ وَبِهَا رَدْعٌ مِنْ حِنَّاءٍ وَعَلَيْهِ بُرْدَانِ أَخْضَرَانِ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ أَبِي ثُمَّ جَلَسْنَا فَتَحَدَّثَنَا سَاعَةً ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِأَبِي ابْنُكَ هَذَا قَالَ إِي وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ قَالَ حَقًّا قَالَ لَأَشْهَدُ بِهِ فَتَبَسَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ضَاحِكًا فِي تَثْبِيتِ شَبَهِي بِأَبِي وَمِنْ حَلْفِ أَبِي عَلَيَّ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَمَا إِنَّهُ لَا يَجْنِي عَلَيْكَ وَلَا تَجْنِي عَلَيْهِ وَقَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَى [الإسراء: 15] الْحَدِيثَ
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ramtha (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I went with my father to the presence of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When I saw him (peace and blessings be upon him), my father said: "Abu Ramtha! Do you recognize him (peace and blessings be upon him)?" I said: "No." He said: "This is Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." At this, my hair stood on end. I thought that the person of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have a status distinct from ordinary people, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) was a human being. His (peace and blessings be upon him) hair reached his ears, there were traces of henna on his hair, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing two green sheets. My father greeted him (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam and we sat down. He (peace and blessings be upon him) talked with us for a while, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is this your son?" My father said: "Yes." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Really?" He replied: "By the Lord of the Ka'bah! It is true that he is my son, I bear witness to this." Hearing all this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled openly, because my resemblance to my father was very clear, yet he was taking an oath. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware! He will not commit any crime against you, and you will not commit any crime against him." Along with this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: {وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَۃٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرٰی} … No soul shall bear the burden of another soul.
Hadith 11160
قَالَ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَعَ أَبِي فَرَأَى الَّتِي بِظَهْرِهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَلَا أُعَالِجُهَا لَكَ فَإِنِّي طَبِيبٌ قَالَ أَنْتَ رَفِيقٌ وَاللَّهُ الطَّبِيبُ قَالَ مَنْ هَذَا مَعَكَ قَالَ ابْنِي قَالَ أَشْهَدُ بِهِ قَالَ أَمَا إِنَّهُ لَا تَجْنِي عَلَيْهِ وَلَا يَجْنِي عَلَيْكَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ أَبِي اسْمُ أَبِي رِمْثَةَ رِفَاعَةُ بْنُ يَثْرَبِيٍّ
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ramtha (may Allah be pleased with him) that I, along with my father, presented myself in the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). My father saw a raised spot on the back of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I am a physician, shall I treat it? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You are just a companion, the true physician is Allah alone. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Who is this with you? My father replied that this is my son and said that I bear witness that he is indeed my son. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: None of your crimes will be upon him, nor will any of his crimes be upon you.
Hadith 11161
عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي رَاشِدٍ عَنِ التَّنُوخِيِّ رَسُولِ هِرَقْلَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ فَجُلْتُ فِي ظَهْرِهِ يَعْنِي النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَإِذَا أَنَا بِخَاتَمٍ فِي مَوْضِعِ غُضْرُوفِ الْكَتِفِ مِثْلِ الْحَجْمَةِ الضَّخْمَةِ (وَفِي لَفْظٍ فَرَأَيْتُ غُضْرُوفَ كَتِفِهِ مِثْلَ الْمِحْجَمِ الضَّخْمِ)
Saeed bin Abi Rashid narrates from Tanookhi, the envoy of Heraclius, who said: I spread my hand over the back of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and near the soft bone of the shoulder, I felt a raised spot like a large cupping mark, that is, the Seal of Prophethood.
