بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي شَيْبِهِ ﷺ
Chapter on What Has Been Reported Regarding His ﷺ Gray Hair
Hadith 11143
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ يَخْضِبْ قَطُّ إِنَّمَا كَانَ الْبَيَاضُ فِي مُقَدَّمِ لِحْيَتِهِ وَفِي الْعَنْفَقَةِ وَفِي الرَّأْسِ وَفِي الصُّدْغَيْنِ شَيْئًا لَا يُكَادُ يُرَى وَإِنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ خَضَبَ بِالْحِنَّاءِ
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never applied dye; only a few hairs in the front part of his blessed beard, in the beard under the chin, and at the temples were so slightly white that it was even difficult to notice them. However, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) used to dye with henna.
Hadith 11144
عَنْ حَرِيزِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ كُنَّا غِلْمَانًا جُلُوسًا عِنْدَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُسْرٍ وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَمْ نَكُنْ نُحْسِنُ نَسْأَلُهُ فَقُلْتُ أَشَيْخًا كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ كَانَ فِي عَنْفَقَتِهِ شَعَرَاتٌ بِيضٌ
It is narrated from Hariz bin Uthman, he says: We were children and were sitting in the company of the Companion of the Messenger of Allah, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Busr (may Allah be pleased with him), and we could not ask and answer him in a good manner. I asked: Had the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) become old? He said: There were only a few white hairs in the beard and hair of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 11145
عَنْ سِمَاكٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ سَمُرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَسُئِلَ عَنْ شَيْبِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ كَانَ فِي رَأْسِهِ شَعَرَاتٌ إِذَا دَهَنَ رَأْسَهُ لَمْ تَتَبَيَّنْ وَإِذَا لَمْ يَدْهَنْهُ تَتَبَيَّنُ
It is narrated from Simak, he says: I heard that Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about the white hair of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: There were a few white hairs on the head of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When he applied oil, they would not be visible, and when he did not apply oil, they would be seen.
Hadith 11146
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ كَانَ شَيْبُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَحْوًا مِنْ عِشْرِينَ شَعْرَةً
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had about twenty white hairs.
Hadith 11147
عَنْ أَبِي رِمْثَةَ التَّيْمِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَعِيَ ابْنٌ لِي فَقَالَ ”ابْنُكَ هَذَا؟“ قُلْتُ أَشْهَدُ بِهِ قَالَ ”لَا يَجْنِي عَلَيْكَ وَلَا تَجْنِي عَلَيْهِ“ قَالَ وَرَأَيْتُ الشَّيْبَ أَحْمَرَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Rimtha Taymi (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and my son was with me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Is this your son? I replied: Yes, I bear witness to this (that he is indeed my son). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The burden of anyone’s crime does not fall upon another among you. Abu Rimtha (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I saw red color in the white hair of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 11148
(وَعَنْهُ) قَالَ خَرَجْتُ مَعَ أَبِي حَتَّى أَتَيْنَا النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَرَأَيْتُ بِرَأْسِهِ رِدْعَ حِنَّاءٍ
Sayyiduna Abu Rimthah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I set out with my father, and we presented ourselves before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I saw the color of henna in the hair of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) head.
Hadith 11149
عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَوْهَبٍ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَخْرَجَتْ إِلَيْنَا شَعْرًا مِنْ شَعْرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَخْضُوبًا بِالْحِنَّاءِ وَالْكَتَمِ
Usman bin Abdullah says: I went to Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she brought out some hair of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). They were dyed with henna and katam herb.
Hadith 11150
عَنْ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ وَهْبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ السُّوَائِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى بِالْأَبْطَحِ الْعَصْرَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَدَّمَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ عَنَزَةً بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ مَارَّةِ الطَّرِيقِ وَرَأَيْتُ الشَّيْبَ بِعَنْفَقَتِهِ أَسْفَلَ مِنْ شَفَتِهِ السُّفْلَى
It is narrated from Abu Juhaifah Wahb bin Abdullah Suwai (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the place of Abtah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed two rak'ahs of the Asr prayer there and placed a spear between himself and those passing by, and I saw a few white hairs in the beard under the lower lip of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
