بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي صِفَةِ خَلْقِهِ، وَتَنَاسُ أَعْضَائِهِ، وَاسْتَوَاءِ أَجْزَائِهِ وَمَا جَمَعَ اللَّهُ فِيهِ مِنَ الْكَمَالَاتِ
Chapter on What Has Been Reported Regarding His Physical Description, Proportion of His Limbs, Symmetry of His Parts, and the Perfections Allah Gathered in Him
Hadith 11120
حَدَّثَنَا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا نُوحُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ عَنْ يُوسُفَ بْنِ مَازِنٍ أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ انْعَتْ لَنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ صِفْهُ لَنَا فَقَالَ كَانَ لَيْسَ بِالذَّاهِبِ طُولًا وَفَوْقَ الرَّبْعَةِ إِذَا جَاءَ مَعَ الْقَوْمِ غَمَرَهُمْ أَبْيَضَ شَدِيدَ الْوَضَحِ ضَخْمَ الْهَامَةِ أَغَرَّ أَبْلَجَ هَدِبَ الْأَشْفَارِ شَثْنَ الْكَفَّيْنِ وَالْقَدَمَيْنِ إِذَا مَشَى يَتَقَلَّعُ كَأَنَّمَا يَنْحَدِرُ فِي صَبَبٍ كَأَنَّ الْعَرَقَ فِي وَجْهِهِ اللُّؤْلُؤُ لَمْ أَرَ قَبْلَهُ وَلَا بَعْدَهُ مِثْلَهُ بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
It is narrated from Yusuf bin Mazin that a man asked Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: O Commander of the Faithful! Please describe to us the blessed appearance of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was not very tall; he was slightly taller than medium height. When he stood among others, he appeared prominent among them. His complexion was radiant white. His blessed head was large. His luminous face was very bright. His eyebrows were not joined together. His eyelashes were thick and long. His blessed palms and feet were full-fleshed. When he walked, he walked with strength as if descending from a height to a lower place. Sweat on his face would shine like pearls. May my parents be sacrificed for him, peace and blessings be upon him. I have not seen anyone like him, peace and blessings be upon him, before or after him.
Hadith 11121
عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ضَخْمَ الرَّأْسِ عَظِيمَ الْعَيْنَيْنِ هَدِبَ الْأَشْفَارِ مُشْرَبَ الْعَيْنِ بِحُمْرَةٍ كَثَّ اللِّحْيَةِ أَزْهَرَ اللَّوْنِ إِذَا مَشَى تَكَفَّأَ كَأَنَّمَا يَمْشِي فِي صَعَدٍ وَإِذَا الْتَفَتَ الْتَفَتَ جَمِيعًا شَثْنَ الْكَفَّيْنِ وَالْقَدَمَيْنِ
Muhammad bin Ali narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had a large blessed head, his eyes were very wide, his eyelashes were long, and there were reddish streaks in his eyes. His beard was thick, his complexion was very radiant, and when he walked, he would lean slightly forward, as if descending from a height. Whenever he turned towards something, he would turn completely. His palms and feet were full and fleshy.
Hadith 11122
عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْسَ بِالطَّوِيلِ وَلَا بِالْقَصِيرِ ضَخْمُ الرَّأْسِ وَاللِّحْيَةِ شَثْنُ الْكَفَّيْنِ وَالْقَدَمَيْنِ مُشْرَبٌ وَجْهُهُ حُمْرَةً طَوِيلُ الْمَسْرُبَةِ ضَخْمُ الْكَرَادِيسِ إِذَا مَشَى تَكَفَّأَ تَكَفُّؤًا كَأَنَّمَا يَنْحَطُّ مِنْ صَبَبٍ لَمْ أَرَ قَبْلَهُ وَلَا بَعْدَهُ مِثْلَهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
(Second Chain) It is narrated from Nafi‘ bin Jubayr bin Mut‘im that Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was neither very tall nor short. His head was large and his beard was thick. The palms of his hands and his feet were fleshy. The radiant face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was white with a reddish tinge. The bones of his limbs were strong. From his chest to his navel there was a long line of hair. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) walked, he would lean slightly forward as if descending from a height. I have not seen anyone like him before or after him.
Hadith 11123
عَنْ صَالِحٍ مَوْلَى التَّوْأَمَةِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَنْعَتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ كَانَ شَبْحَ الذِّرَاعَيْنِ أَهْدَبَ أَشْفَارِ الْعَيْنَيْنِ بَعِيدَ مَا بَيْنَ الْمَنْكِبَيْنِ يُقْبِلُ إِذَا أَقْبَلَ جَمِيعًا وَيُدْبِرُ إِذَا أَدْبَرَ جَمِيعًا قَالَ رَوْحٌ فِي حَدِيثِهِ بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي لَمْ يَكُنْ فَاحِشًا وَلَا مُتَفَحِّشًا وَلَا سَخَّابًا بِالْأَسْوَاقِ زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ ضَخْمَ الْكَفَّيْنِ وَالْقَدَمَيْنِ لَمْ أَرَ بَعْدَهُ مِثْلَهُ
It is narrated from Abu Salih, the freed slave of Al-Taw’amah, who says: I heard Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) describing the blessed appearance of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: The hands of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were long (or broad), the eyelashes of his eyes were also long, there was a slight prominent gap between his shoulders (that is, his chest was broad), and whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned, he would turn completely and attentively. The narrator Ruh said in his narration: May my parents be sacrificed for you, you were neither habitually nor deliberately foul-mouthed, nor did you (peace and blessings be upon him) speak loudly in the markets (and streets), your blessed palms and feet were full of flesh, and I have not seen anyone like you after you.
Hadith 11124
عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلًا مَرْبُوعًا بَعِيدَ مَا بَيْنَ الْمَنْكِبَيْنِ عَظِيمَ الْجُمَّةِ إِلَى شَحْمَةِ أُذُنَيْهِ عَلَيْهِ حُلَّةٌ حَمْرَاءُ مَا رَأَيْتُ شَيْئًا قَطُّ أَحْسَنَ مِنْهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had straight hair, his stature was of medium height, there was a slight gap between his shoulders (that is, his chest was broad), the hair on his head reached his earlobes, and once he wore a red garment. I have never seen anyone more beautiful than him.
Hadith 11125
عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَنْعَتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِمَا شَاءَ أَنْ يَنْعَتَهُ قَالَ ثُمَّ سَمِعْتُ أَنَسًا يَقُولُ وَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَبْعَةً مِنَ الْقَوْمِ لَيْسَ بِالْقَصِيرِ وَلَا بِالطَّوِيلِ الْبَائِنِ أَزْهَرَ لَيْسَ بِالْآدَمِ وَلَا بِالْأَبْيَضِ وَلَا الْأَمْهَقِ رَجِلَ الشَّعْرِ لَيْسَ بِالسَّبْطِ وَلَا الْجَعْدِ الْقَطَطِ بُعِثَ عَلَى رَأْسِ أَرْبَعِينَ أَقَامَ بِمَكَّةَ عَشْرًا وَبِالْمَدِينَةِ عَشْرًا وَتُوُفِّيَ عَلَى رَأْسِ سِتِّينَ سَنَةً لَيْسَ فِي رَأْسِهِ وَلِحْيَتِهِ عِشْرُونَ شَعْرَةً بَيْضَاءَ
It is narrated from Rabi’ah bin Abi Abdur Rahman that he heard Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) describing the blessed appearance of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in his own way. I heard Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) say: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was of medium height among the people, neither very short nor very tall. His complexion was radiant, neither wheatish nor completely white, but fair and luminous. His hair was neither completely straight nor very curly, but slightly wavy. He was honored with prophethood at the age of forty. After that, he stayed for ten years in Makkah Mukarramah and ten years in Madinah Munawwarah. He passed away at the age of sixty. There were not even twenty white hairs on his head and beard.
Hadith 11126
حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ سِمَاكٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ سَمُرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ضَلِيعَ الْفَمِ أَشْكَلَ الْعَيْنِ مَنْهُوسَ الْعَقِبَيْنِ قُلْتُ لِسِمَاكٍ مَا ضَلِيعُ الْفَمِ قَالَ عَظِيمُ الْفَمِ قُلْتُ مَا أَشْكَلُ الْعَيْنِ قَالَ طَوِيلُ شُفْرِ الْعَيْنِ قُلْتُ مَا مَنْهُوسُ الْعَقِبِ قَالَ قَلِيلُ لَحْمِ الْعَقِبِ
Simak says: I heard Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had a wide mouth, there was redness in the whiteness of his eyes, and the flesh on his heels was little. Imam Shu’bah says: I asked Simak what is the meaning of “Dali’ al-fam”? He said: One with a wide mouth. I asked: What is meant by “Ashkal al-‘Ayn”? He said: One with long eyelashes. I asked: What is the meaning of “Manhus al-‘Aqib”? He said: One whose heels have little flesh.
Hadith 11127
عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ كَانَ فِي سَاقَيْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حُمُوشَةٌ وَكَانَ لَا يَضْحَكُ إِلَّا تَبَسُّمًا وَكُنْتُ إِذَا رَأَيْتُهُ قُلْتُ أَكْحَلُ الْعَيْنَيْنِ وَلَيْسَ بِأَكْحَلَ
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah رضي الله عنه narrates that the shins of the Noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم were proportionately slim in accordance with the rest of his body. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم did not laugh loudly; rather, he would only smile. When I looked at him صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم, it seemed as if he had applied kohl to his eyes, even though he صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم had not applied any kohl. (That is, the eyes of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم were naturally dark-lined.)
Hadith 11128
عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ إِصْبَعُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُتَظَاهِرَةٌ
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the toe next to the big toe of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was longer than the big toe.
Hadith 11129
عَنْ أَشْعَثَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِشَيْخٍ مِنْ بَنِي مَالِكِ بْنِ كِنَانَةَ رَأَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ انْعَتْ لَنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ بَيْنَ بُرْدَيْنِ أَحْمَرَيْنِ مَرْبُوعٌ كَثِيرُ اللَّحْمِ حَسَنُ الْوَجْهِ شَدِيدُ سَوَادِ الشَّعْرِ أَبْيَضُ شَدِيدُ الْبَيَاضِ سَابِغُ الشَّعْرِ
Ash'ath said to an elder of Banu Malik bin Kinanah who had seen the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Describe to us the appearance of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: He was wearing two red garments, of medium height, with a fleshy body, handsome, hair extremely black, complexion extremely fair, and the hair of his head was long.
Hadith 11130
عَنْ مُحَرِّشٍ الْخُزَاعِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَرَجَ مِنَ الْجِعْرَانَةِ لَيْلًا فَاعْتَمَرَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَأَصْبَحَ كَبَائِتٍ بِهَا فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَى ظَهْرِهِ كَأَنَّهُ سَبِيكَةُ فِضَّةٍ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mahrash Khuzai (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out from Ji‘irrana at night, performed ‘Umrah, and then returned. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spent the morning in Ji‘irrana, and it seemed as if he had spent the night there in Ji‘irrana itself. I saw his back, and it appeared as if it was a silver plate.
