بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي احْتِصَارِهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَمُعَالَجَتِهِ سَكَرَاتِ الْمَوْتِ وَتَخْسِيرِهِ بَيْنَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ وَاخْتِيَارِهِ الرَّفِيقَ الْأَعْلَى وَهُوَ آخِرُ مَا تَكَلَّمَ بِهِ
Chapter on What Has Been Reported Regarding His ﷺ Death, His Suffering the Agonies of Death, His Being Given the Choice Between This World and the Hereafter, and His Choosing the Highest Companion, and That This Was the Last Thing He Spoke
Hadith 11022
حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُعَوِّذُ بِهَذِهِ الْكَلِمَاتِ أَذْهِبِ الْبَاسَ رَبَّ النَّاسِ اشْفِ وَأَنْتَ الشَّافِي لَا شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا ثَقُلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَرَضِهِ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ أَخَذْتُ بِيَدِهِ فَجَعَلْتُ أَمْسَحُهُ بِهَا وَأَقُولُهَا قَالَتْ فَنَزَعَ يَدَهُ مِنِّي ثُمَّ قَالَ رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَأَلْحِقْنِي بِالرَّفِيقِ قَالَ أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ قَالَتْ فَكَانَ هَذَا آخِرَ مَا سَمِعْتُ مِنْ كَلَامِهِ قَالَ ابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا عَادَ مَرِيضًا مَسَحَهُ بِيَدِهِ وَقَالَ أَذْهِبِ الْبَاسَ رَبَّ النَّاسِ اشْفِ وَأَنْتَ الشَّافِي لَا شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite the following words when performing ruqyah (spiritual healing) for the sick: "Remove the illness, Lord of the people! Grant healing, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves behind no sickness." (O Lord of the people! Remove the disease, grant healing, You are the only Healer, there is no healing except Your healing, grant such a healing that eliminates all illness.)
When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became seriously ill during his final illness, I would take his hand and pass it over his blessed body and recite these words. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) withdrew his hand from mine and said: "O my Lord! Forgive me and join me with the Highest Companion." Imam Ahmad's teacher, Abu Muawiyah, said that Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) stated that these were the last words she heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Another teacher of Imam Ahmad, Ibn Ja'far, said that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) visited a sick person, he would pass his hand over the patient's body and recite this supplication: "Remove..."

Hadith 11023
عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ قَالَ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا مَاتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي بَيْتِي وَيَوْمِي وَبَيْنَ سَحْرِي وَنَحْرِي فَدَخَلَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا وَمَعَهُ سِوَاكٌ رَطْبٌ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّ لَهُ فِيهِ حَاجَةً قَالَتْ فَأَخَذْتُهُ فَمَضَغْتُهُ وَنَفَضْتُهُ وَطَيَّبْتُهُ ثُمَّ دَفَعْتُهُ إِلَيْهِ فَاسْتَنَّ كَأَحْسَنِ مَا رَأَيْتُهُ مُسْتَنًّا قَطُّ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ يَرْفَعُهُ إِلَيَّ فَسَقَطَ مِنْ يَدِهِ فَأَخَذْتُ أَدْعُو اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِدُعَاءٍ كَانَ يَدْعُو لَهُ بِهِ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ وَكَانَ هُوَ يَدْعُو بِهِ إِذَا مَرِضَ فَلَمْ يَدْعُ بِهِ فِي مَرَضِهِ ذَلِكَ فَرَفَعَ بَصَرَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ وَقَالَ الرَّفِيقُ الْأَعْلَى الرَّفِيقُ الْأَعْلَى يَعْنِي وَفَاضَتْ نَفْسُهُ فَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي جَمَعَ بَيْنَ رِيقِي وَرِيقِهِ فِي آخِرِ يَوْمٍ مِنْ أَيَّامِ الدُّنْيَا
It is narrated from Ibn Abi Mulaika that Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away in my house and on the day of my turn, while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was between my chest and neck. At that time, my brother, Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and he had a fresh miswak with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked towards that miswak, and I understood that he (peace and blessings be upon him) needed the miswak. I took the miswak from him, chewed it, cleaned it, and gave it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) used the miswak in such a beautiful manner that I had never seen him (peace and blessings be upon him) use the miswak so beautifully before. Then, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) tried to hand it back to me, it fell from his hand. I picked it up and began to recite the supplication to Allah Almighty that Jibreel (peace be upon him) used to make for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself used to recite whenever he was ill. But in this illness, he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not recite that supplication. He (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his gaze towards the sky and said: "The Highest Companion, the Highest Companion." And with that, his (peace and blessings be upon him) soul departed. All praise is due to Allah, Who united my saliva with the saliva of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on his last day.
Hadith 11024
عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ لَمَّا قَالَتْ فَاطِمَةُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ذَلِكَ يَعْنِي لَمَّا وَجَدَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ كَرْبِ الْمَوْتِ مَا وَجَدَ قَالَتْ فَاطِمَةُ وَا كَرْبَاهُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَا بُنَيَّةِ إِنَّهُ قَدْ حَضَرَ بِأَبِيكِ مَا لَيْسَ اللَّهُ بِتَارِكٍ مِنْهُ أَحَدًا لِمُوَافَاةِ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the signs of death appeared on the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) involuntarily exclaimed: "Oh, the calamity!" So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Daughter! The time has now come upon your father that Allah Almighty will not exempt anyone from it until the Day of Judgment."
Hadith 11025
أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ قَالَ عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ إِنَّ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ صَحِيحٌ يَقُولُ إِنَّهُ لَمْ يُقْبَضْ نَبِيٌّ قَطُّ حَتَّى يَرَى مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ ثُمَّ يُحَيَّا فَلَمَّا اشْتَكَى وَحَضَرَهُ الْقَبْضُ وَرَأْسُهُ عَلَى فَخْذِ عَائِشَةَ غُشِيَ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمَّا أَفَاقَ شَخَصَ بَصَرَهُ نَحْوَ سَقْفِ الْبَيْتِ ثُمَّ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ الرَّفِيقَ الْأَعْلَى قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّهُ حَدِيثُهُ الَّذِي كَانَ يُحَدِّثُنَا وَهُوَ صَحِيحٌ
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was healthy, he used to say that every prophet is shown his place in Paradise before his death. Then he is given the choice between this world and the Hereafter. When the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became ill and the time of his passing approached, at that time his blessed head was on the thigh of Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). He (peace and blessings be upon him) fell unconscious, and when he regained consciousness, he looked towards the ceiling of the room and said: O Allah! I wish to join the Highest Companion. I understood that this was the fulfillment of what he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to tell us during his days of health.
Hadith 11026
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَا مِنْ نَبِيٍّ يَمْرَضُ إِلَّا خُيِّرَ بَيْنَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا مَرِضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَرَضَ الَّذِي قُبِضَ فِيهِ أَخَذَتْهُ بُحَّةٌ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ مَعَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ وَالصَّالِحِينَ قَالَتْ فَعَلِمْتُ أَنَّهُ خُيِّرَ
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that whenever a prophet falls ill, he is given the choice between this world and the Hereafter. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was afflicted with his final illness, he coughed, then I heard him say: {مَعَ الَّذِینَ أَنْعَمَ اللّٰہُ عَلَیْہِمْ مِنَ النَّبِیِّینَ وَالصِّدِّیقِینَ وَالشُّہَدَاء ِ وَالصَّالِحِینَ۔} "With those upon whom Allah has bestowed His favor from among the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous." Upon hearing this, I realized that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had been given the choice between this world and the Hereafter (and he chose the Hereafter).
Hadith 11027
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَا مِنْ نَبِيٍّ إِلَّا تُقْبَضُ نَفْسُهُ ثُمَّ يَرَى الثَّوَابَ ثُمَّ تُرَدُّ إِلَيْهِ فَيُخَيَّرُ بَيْنَ أَنْ تُرَدَّ إِلَيْهِ إِلَى أَنْ يَلْحَقَ فَكُنْتُ قَدْ حَفِظْتُ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ فَإِنِّي لَمُسْنِدَتُهُ إِلَى صَدْرِي فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ حَتَّى مَالَتْ عُنُقُهُ فَقُلْتُ قَدْ قَضَى قَالَتْ فَعَرَفْتُ الَّذِي قَالَ فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ حَتَّى ارْتَفَعَ فَنَظَرَ قَالَتْ قُلْتُ إِذَنْ وَاللَّهِ لَا يَخْتَارُنَا فَقَالَ مَعَ الرَّفِيقِ الْأَعْلَى فِي الْجَنَّةِ مَعَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say (during his blessed life) that the soul of every prophet is seized for a short while, and after showing him his reward, his soul is returned to him, and he is given the choice to select between this world and the Hereafter, whichever he wishes. I remembered this statement that I had heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). During his final illness, I was holding the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to my chest when his neck drooped. I looked at him and thought that he had passed away. I remembered what he had said. I looked at him, and his condition improved. I realized that now he (peace and blessings be upon him) would not choose us. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: {مَعَ الَّذِینَ أَنْعَمَ اللّٰہُ عَلَیْہِمْ مِنَ النَّبِیِّینَ وَالصِّدِّیقِینَ وَالشُّہَدَاء ِ وَالصَّالِحِینَ۔} "With those prophets, truthful ones, martyrs, and righteous, upon whom Allah has bestowed His favor." Until the end of the verse.
Hadith 11028
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ قَالَتْ كُنْتُ أَسْمَعُ لَا يَمُوتُ نَبِيٌّ إِلَّا خُيِّرَ بَيْنَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ قَالَتْ فَأَصَابَتْهُ بُحَّةٌ فِي مَرَضِهِ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ مَعَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ وَالصَّالِحِينَ وَحَسُنَ أُولَئِكَ رَفِيقًا فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ خُيِّرَ
(Second Chain) It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that I used to hear from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that every prophet is given the choice before death to select either this world or the Hereafter. During his final illness, once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) coughed and I heard him reciting this verse: {مَعَ الَّذِینَ أَنْعَمَ اللّٰہُ عَلَیْہِمْ مِنَ النَّبِیِّینَ وَالصِّدِّیقِینَ وَالشُّہَدَائِ وَالصَّالِحِینَ وَحَسُنَ أُولٰئِکَ رَفِیقًا} … With those prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous upon whom Allah has bestowed His favor—how excellent these companions are! So I realized that he had been given the choice between this world and the Hereafter.
Hadith 11029
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعِنْدَهُ قَدَحٌ فِيهِ مَاءٌ فَيُدْخِلُ يَدَهُ فِي الْقَدَحِ ثُمَّ يَمْسَحُ وَجْهَهُ بِالْمَاءِ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى سَكَرَاتِ الْمَوْتِ
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), a bowl of water was placed near him, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would put his hand in the bowl, wet it, and wipe it over his blessed face, and kept supplicating: "Allahumma a'inni 'ala sakaratil mawt" (O Allah! Help me in the agonies of death.)
Hadith 11030
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَوْ قُبِضَ أَوْ مَاتَ وَهُوَ بَيْنَ حَاقِنَتِي وَذَاقِنَتِي فَلَا أَكْرَهُ شِدَّةَ الْمَوْتِ لِأَحَدٍ أَبَدًا بَعْدَ الَّذِي رَأَيْتُ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away while he was between my chest and neck. Since I witnessed the severity of the agony of death upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), therefore I do not dislike the severity of death for anyone now.
Hadith 11031
إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ قَالَ ثَنَا رِبَاحٌ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِمَعْمَرٍ قُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ قَالَ نَعَمْ
It is narrated from Rabah, he says: I asked Muammar: Did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, pass away while he was sitting? He said: Yes.
Hadith 11032
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ كَانَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَمِيصَةٌ سَوْدَاءُ حِينَ اشْتَدَّ بِهِ وَجَعُهُ قَالَتْ فَهُوَ يَضَعُهَا مَرَّةً عَلَى وَجْهِهِ وَمَرَّةً يَكْشِفُهَا عَنْهُ وَيَقُولُ ”قَاتَلَ اللَّهُ قَوْمًا اتَّخَذُوا قُبُورَ أَنْبِيَائِهِمْ مَسَاجِدَ“ يُحَرِّمُ ذَلِكَ عَلَى أُمَّتِهِ
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the illness of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became severe. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing a black cloak. He (peace and blessings be upon him) would sometimes cover his face with it and sometimes remove it, and he said: "May Allah destroy those people who made the graves of their prophets places of prostration." In fact, by saying this, he (peace and blessings be upon him) was declaring this act forbidden for his ummah.
Hadith 11033
(وَعَنْهَا أَيْضًا) أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ تُوُفِّيَ سُجِّيَ بِثَوْبِ حِبَرَةٍ
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, he was covered with a striped sheet.
Hadith 11034
(وَعَنْهَا أَيْضًا) قَالَتْ قُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَرَأْسُهُ بَيْنَ سَحْرِي وَنَحْرِي قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا خَرَجَتْ نَفْسُهُ لَمْ أَجِدْ أَطْيَبَ مِنْهَا
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away while his blessed head was between my chest and neck. When his soul departed, I have not seen anyone in a better state than that.
Hadith 11035
عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَأَخْرَجَتْ إِلَيْنَا إِزَارًا غَلِيظًا مِمَّا صُنِعَ بِالْيَمَنِ وَكِسَاءً مِنَ الَّتِي يَدْعُونَ الْمُلَبَّدَةَ قَالَ بَهْزٌ تَدْعُونَ فَقَالَتْ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قُبِضَ فِي هَذَيْنِ الثَّوْبَيْنِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Burdah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I went to the service of Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she showed us a thick sheet made in Yemen and another sheet which you people call "mulabbadah", and said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, he was wearing these two sheets.
Hadith 11036
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ ”إِنَّهُ لَيُهَوَّنُ عَلَيَّ أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ بَيَاضَ كَفِّ عَائِشَةَ فِي الْجَنَّةِ“
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is a source of comfort for me that I have seen the whiteness of Aisha's palm in Paradise.
