It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Najeeh Salmi (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: We besieged the fort or palace of Ta’if in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever shoots an arrow in the way of Allah will receive one rank in Paradise. So, I shot sixteen arrows that day. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) further said: And whoever strikes the enemy with an arrow in the way of Allah, he will have a reward equal to freeing a slave man or woman. And whoever grows old in the way of Allah, then the whiteness of his old age will be a source of light for him on the Day of Resurrection.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Turaif (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laid siege to Ta’if, I was also with him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to lead us in the ‘Asr prayer at such a time that if a person, after finishing this prayer, wanted to see the place where an arrow had fallen, he could (easily) see it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) besieged the people of Ta’if, two slaves from among them joined the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). One of them was named Abu Bakrah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set both of them free. It was the blessed habit of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that whenever a slave from the enemy’s side joined him, he would set him free.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) besieged the people of Ta’if and did not achieve victory, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “We shall, God willing, depart tomorrow.” It seemed as if the Muslims did not like this decision, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Alright, then fight in the morning.” When morning came, the Muslims fought, as a result of which many Muslims were wounded. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) then said: “We shall, God willing, depart tomorrow.” Upon hearing this, the Muslims became happy, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled when he saw their reaction.
