It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out towards Makkah Mukarramah in the month of Ramadan in the year of the conquest of Makkah. In one narration, it is mentioned that ten days of Ramadan had passed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was fasting. At midday, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a water reservoir. Since the people were thirsty, they were stretching their necks and longing for water. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had a cup of water brought to him and held it in his hand until everyone saw him in that state. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drank it, and the people also drank water (and thus broke their fast).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that after this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out on a journey and appointed Sayyiduna Abu Ruhm Kulthum bin Husayn Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) as his deputy in Madinah Munawwarah. He began the journey on the tenth of Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and all the companions were fasting. When they reached the place of Kudayd between ‘Usfan and Amj, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) broke his fast. After proceeding from there, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped at Mar al-Zahran. Ten thousand Muslims were accompanying the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on this journey.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Hatib bin Abi Balta’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote a letter to the people of Makkah and informed them that (the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was about to attack Makkah). But Allah Almighty informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the woman who was carrying this letter towards Makkah. He sent some companions after her, and the letter was recovered from her hair. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “Hatib! Did you really do this?” He replied, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah, I did this not out of deceit or hypocrisy, but I was certain that Allah Almighty would surely grant victory to His Messenger and grant him success. The real matter is that I had come from outside and settled in Makkah. My mother was residing among them. In this way, I wanted to do a favor to the people of Makkah.” Upon hearing this, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Should I not strike off his head?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Would you kill a participant of Badr? Do you not know that Allah Almighty looked upon the people of Badr and said: Now do whatever you wish.”
