It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Mu’adh (may Allah be pleased with him) went for ‘Umrah and stayed as a guest with Safwan bin Umayyah bin Khalaf. Umayyah, when traveling from Makkah to Shaam, would also stay with Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) in Madinah Munawwarah. Umayyah said to Sa’d: Wait for a while; when it is midday and people are tired, then go and perform Tawaf. Sayyiduna Sa’d was performing Tawaf when Abu Jahl came to him and said: Who is this, performing Tawaf of the Ka’bah with such peace and security? Sa’d replied: I am Sa’d. Abu Jahl said: You are performing Tawaf with such peace, even though you people have given refuge to Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). There was an exchange of words between the two, so Umayyah said to Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him): Do not raise your voice against Abu al-Hakam (i.e., Abu Jahl); he is the chief here. But Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! If you stop me from performing Tawaf of the House of Allah, I will block your trade route to Shaam. Umayyah again said to Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) and began to restrain him, saying: Do not raise your voice in front of Abu al-Hakam (i.e., Abu Jahl). Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry and said: Leave me! I have heard from Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he said: They will surely kill you. Umayyah said: Me? Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yes, yes. Umayyah said: By Allah! The word of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) cannot be false. When the people left, he went to his wife and said: Do you know what the guest from Yathrib said? And then he told her the whole story. When the announcement of battle was made and people began to head towards Badr, Umayyah’s wife said to him: Do you not remember what your Yathribi brother said? At first, he intended not to go to battle, but Abu Jahl said to him: You are one of the chiefs here, so come with us for a day or two. Thus, he went with them, and Allah Almighty caused him to perish (at Badr).
