It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: On the day of Badr, I was standing in the row, I looked to my right and left and found myself standing between two young Ansari boys. I thought to myself, if only there was a strong man near me instead of these young boys. Meanwhile, one of them drew my attention and asked, "Uncle! Do you recognize Abu Jahl?" I said, "Yes! But nephew! Tell me, what do you want with him?" He replied, "I have heard that he has abused the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). By the One in whose hand is my soul! If I see him, I will not leave him until one of us who is destined to die first, dies." At the same time, the other young boy drew my attention and said the same thing to me. I was amazed at both of them. Meanwhile, I saw Abu Jahl moving among the disbelievers. I said to both of them, "Do you see that man? That is the one you are inquiring about." As soon as they heard this, they rushed towards him. When Abu Jahl confronted them, they struck him and killed him. After that, they presented themselves before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of the entire incident. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them, "Which of you killed him?" Each of them said that he had killed him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "Have you cleaned your swords?" They replied, "No." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at both swords and said, "Both of you have killed him." And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) decided the spoils obtained from Abu Jahl in favor of Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him). The names of these two young men are Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Afra (may Allah be pleased with him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said on the day of Badr: Who will go and see what Abu Jahl is doing? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) went, and he saw that the two sons of Afra had struck down Abu Jahl until he was near death. Then Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) caught him by his beard and said: Are you Abu Jahl? Abu Jahl said: Of all the people you have killed, is there anyone greater than me? Or he said: Is there any man greater than me among those whose family has killed him?

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: On the day of Badr, I reached Abu Jahl, he had been struck on his leg and had fallen down, and even in that state, he was driving people away from himself with his sword. I said: O enemy of Allah! Praise be to that Allah who has disgraced you. He replied: I am the one whom his own people have killed. Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) stated that upon his saying this, I finally struck his hand with my sword and his sword fell down. Then I firmly caught hold of him, struck him, and killed him. Then, in the heat, I happily walked to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so happy that my feet were not touching the ground. I told you the whole story. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By Allah, besides whom there is no deity, really? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated his words three times. I said: Really, by Allah, besides whom there is no deity! Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) walked with me until he stood by his (Abu Jahl’s) corpse. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O enemy of Allah! Praise be to Allah who has humiliated and disgraced you. He was the Pharaoh of this Ummah. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gifted me the sword of Abu Jahl.

(Second chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I presented myself before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Allah Almighty has destroyed Abu Jahl. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: All praise is due to Allah, Who helped His servant and honored His religion. The words of the narrator Umayyah bin Khalid are: All praise is due to Allah, Who fulfilled the promise He made to His servant and honored His religion. The words of another narration are as follows: All praise is due to Allah, Who fulfilled His promise, helped His servant, and He alone defeated all the armies of the disbelievers.
