Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) sent Sayyiduna Basisa (may Allah be pleased with him) as a spy so that he could keep an eye on the caravan of Abu Sufyan. Once, when there was no one in the house except me and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), he came. Thabit, the narrator, says: I do not remember whether Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) made an exception for any of the Mothers of the Believers or not. And Sayyiduna Basisa (may Allah be pleased with him) came and spoke to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) went outside and said: We have our eyes on a caravan; whoever has a mount should ride and go with us. Some people sought permission, saying their mounts were in the upper area of Madinah, and they wanted to go and bring them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: No, only those whose mounts are present right now should go. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and his companions set out and reached the place of Badr before the polytheists. The polytheists also arrived. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: No one should advance until I give permission. When the polytheists came close to the Muslims, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Now advance towards that Paradise whose width is equal to the heavens and the earth. Umair bin Hammam Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Is the width of Paradise equal to the heavens and the earth? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Yes! So he began to say: Wonderful! Wonderful! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Why are you saying "Wonderful! Wonderful!"? He said: O Messenger of Allah! I am saying these words in the hope that Allah will make me among the people of Paradise. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: You are of Paradise. After that, he took out some dates from his pouch and began to eat them. Then he said: If I remain alive until I finish eating these dates, that would be a long life indeed. So he threw away the dates he had and fought the polytheists until he was martyred.
