It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, the people of the tribe of Juhainah came to him and said, “You have now come among us, establish a strong relationship with us so that we may come to serve you and you (peace and blessings be upon him) may also lead us.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made a firm covenant with them, and they entered the fold of Islam. Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us in the month of Rajab; our number was not even a hundred. He commanded us to attack a branch of Banu Kinana settled near the tribe of Juhainah. We attacked them; they were very numerous. We sought refuge among the tribe of Juhainah, and they gave us protection and also said, “Why do you fight in the sacred month?” We said, “We fight those who expelled us from the Sacred Land, that is, the sacred city, in the sacred month.” Hearing this, some of us said to each other, “What do you think now?” Some said, “We should go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and inform him of the situation.” But some people said, “No, no, we should stay here.” And I, along with a few more people, said that we should head towards the caravan of Quraysh and seize it. So we set out towards the caravan. In those days, the custom was that whoever took possession of property, it became his. We set out towards the caravan, and some of our companions went and informed the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of the whole situation. The blessed face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned red, and he stood up angrily and said, “You left from me together and are returning separately. It was this very discord that destroyed those before you. I will send over you a man as your leader who is not better or superior to you, but he can endure hunger and thirst more than you.” Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Jahsh Asadi (may Allah be pleased with him) as our leader and sent him. He was the first person to be appointed as a leader in the era of Islam.
