It is narrated from Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The first Companions to come to us were: Sayyiduna Mus‘ab bin ‘Umair and Sayyiduna Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with them both), these two used to teach people the Noble Qur’an. Then Sayyiduna ‘Ammar, Sayyiduna Bilal, and Sa‘d also arrived. After them, Sayyiduna ‘Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came along with twenty individuals. Thereafter, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived. I have never seen the people of Madinah so happy as they were at his (peace and blessings be upon him) arrival, to the extent that I saw girls and boys saying: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has arrived!” Before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had arrived, I had already learned Surah Al-A‘la and some of the other short surahs.
