بَابُ رُؤْيَةِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم جِبْرِيلَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ فِي صُورَتِهِ الَّتِي خُلِقَ عَلَيْهَا وَهَلْ رَأَى رَبَّهُ عَزَّوَجَلَّ لَيْلَةَ الْمِعْرَاجِ أَمْ لَا؟
Chapter: The Prophet ﷺ's vision of Jibril, peace be upon him, in his original form, and whether he saw his Lord Almighty on the night of Mi'raj or not
Hadith 10586
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَأَيْتُ رَبِّي تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْإِمَامِ أَحْمَدَ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ مِنْ أَبِي أَمْلَى عَلَيَّ فِي مَوْضِعٍ آخَرَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I saw my Lord, the Exalted. Abdullah bin Imam Ahmad says: I heard this hadith from my father, and he had dictated this hadith to me at another place.
Hadith 10587
حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ ثَنَا قَتَادَةُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ لَوْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَأَلْتُهُ قَالَ وَمَا كُنْتَ تَسْأَلُهُ قَالَ كُنْتُ أَسْأَلُهُ هَلْ رَأَى رَبَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَالَ فَإِنِّي قَدْ سَأَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ قَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ نُورًا أَنَّى أَرَاهُ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Shaqiq says: I said to Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him): If I had seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I would have asked him a question. He said: So what question would you have asked? I said: I would have asked whether you (peace and blessings be upon him) saw your Lord? He said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) this question, to which he replied: I saw Light; how could I see Him?
Hadith 10588
مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ وَبَهْزٌ قَالَا ثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ بَهْزٌ ثَنَا قَتَادَةُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ لَوْ أَدْرَكْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَسَأَلْتُهُ قَالَ عَنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ قُلْتُ هَلْ رَأَيْتَ رَبَّكَ قَالَ قَدْ سَأَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ نُورٌ أَنَّى أَرَاهُ يَعْنِي عَلَى طَرِيقِ الْإِيجَابِ
(Second chain) Abdullah bin Shaqiq says: I said to Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him): If I had met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I would have asked him one question. He said: About what? I said: I would have asked whether you (peace and blessings be upon him) saw your Lord. He said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) this question, and in reply he said: He is Light, how could I see Him? That is, he gave a positive answer.
Hadith 10589
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ثَنَا عَامِرٌ قَالَ أَتَى مَسْرُوقٌ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَقَالَ يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ هَلْ رَأَى مُحَمَّدٌ رَبَّهُ قَالَتْ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ لَقَدْ قَفَّ شَعْرِي لِمَا قُلْتَ أَيْنَ أَنْتَ مِنْ ثَلَاثٍ مَنْ حَدَّثَكَهُنَّ فَقَدْ كَذَبَ مَنْ حَدَّثَكَ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَأَى رَبَّهُ فَقَدْ كَذَبَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَتْ {لَا تُدْرِكُهُ الْأَبْصَارُ وَهُوَ يُدْرِكُ الْأَبْصَارَ} [الأنعام: 103] {وَمَا كَانَ لِبَشَرٍ أَنْ يُكَلِّمَهُ اللَّهُ إِلَّا وَحْيًا أَوْ مِنْ وَرَاءِ حِجَابٍ} [الشورى: 51] وَمَنْ أَخْبَرَكَ بِمَا فِي غَدٍ فَقَدْ كَذَبَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَتْ {إِنَّ اللَّهَ عِنْدَهُ عِلْمُ السَّاعَةِ وَيُنَزِّلُ الْغَيْثَ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِي الْأَرْحَامِ} [لقمان: 34] وَمَنْ أَخْبَرَكَ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَتَمَ فَقَدْ كَذَبَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَتْ {يَا أَيُّهَا الرَّسُولُ بَلِّغْ مَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ رَبِّكَ} [المائدة: 67] وَلَكِنَّهُ رَأَى جِبْرِيلَ فِي صُورَتِهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ
‘Aamir narrates that Masruq came to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: O Mother of the Believers! Did Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) see his Lord? She said: Glory be to Allah! What a strange thing, your words have made my hair stand on end. Do you not know about these three things, that whoever tells you about them, he is a liar: (1) Whoever tells you that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) saw his Lord, then he has lied. Then Sayyidah recited these verses: No vision can grasp Him, but He grasps all vision. (Surah Al-An’am: 103) And Allah Almighty said: It is not possible for any human that Allah should speak to him except by revelation, or from behind a veil, or by sending a messenger to reveal, by His permission, what He wills. Indeed, He is Most High, Most Wise. (Surah Az-Zukhruf: 51) (2) Whoever tells you about tomorrow, he is also a liar. Then Sayyidah recited this verse: Verily, with Allah is the knowledge of the Hour, He sends down the rain, and knows what is in the wombs. And (3) whoever tells you that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) concealed any part of the Shari’ah, he is also a liar. Then she recited this verse: O Messenger! Convey what has been revealed to you from your Lord. In fact, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw Jibreel in his original form twice.
Hadith 10590
مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ أَيْضًا قَالَ كُنْتُ مُتَّكِئًا عِنْدَ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَقَالَتْ يَا أَبَا عَائِشَةَ أَنَا أَوَّلُ مَنْ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ هَذِهِ قَالَ ذَلِكَ جِبْرِيلُ لَمْ أَرَهُ فِي صُورَتِهِ الَّتِي خُلِقَ فِيهَا إِلَّا مَرَّتَيْنِ رَأَيْتُهُ مُنْهَبِطًا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ سَادًّا عِظَمُ خَلْقِهِ مَا بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ
(Second chain) Masruq says: I was sitting reclining with Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said: O Abu Aisha! I am the first person who asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this matter. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That was Jibreel; I have only seen him in his true form twice. When I saw him descending from the sky, his great form filled the space between the sky and the earth.
Hadith 10591
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ سَأَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ جِبْرِيلَ أَنْ يَرَاهُ فِي صُورَتِهِ فَقَالَ ادْعُ رَبَّكَ قَالَ فَدَعَا رَبَّهُ فَطَلَعَ عَلَيْهِ سَوَادٌ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْمَشْرِقِ قَالَ فَجَعَلَ يَرْتَفِعُ وَيَنْتَشِرُ قَالَ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَعِقَ فَأَتَاهُ فَنَعَشَهُ وَمَسَحَ الْبُزَاقَ عَنْ شِدْقَيْهِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) asked Jibreel (peace be upon him) if he wished to see him in his original form. He replied: Pray to your Lord. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) prayed to his Lord. Then, from the east, a black figure arose, and it began to rise and expand. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) saw it, he fainted. Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to him, made him stand, and wiped the saliva from the corner of his mouth.
Hadith 10592
عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى يَعْنِي الْأَشْعَرِيَّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَا يَنَامُ وَلَا يَنْبَغِي لَهُ أَنْ يَنَامَ يَخْفِضُ الْقِسْطَ وَيَرْفَعُهُ حِجَابُهُ النَّارُ لَوْ كَشَفَهَا لَأَحْرَقَتْ سُبُحَاتُ وَجْهِهِ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ أَدْرَكَهُ بَصَرُهُ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ {نُودِيَ أَنْ بُورِكَ مَنْ فِي النَّارِ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهَا وَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ} [النمل: 8]
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Verily, Allah does not sleep, nor does it befit Him to sleep. He lowers the scale for some and raises it for others. His veil is fire. If He were to remove that veil, the radiance and splendor of His Face would burn everything that His gaze reaches. Then Abu Ubaidah, the narrator, recited this verse: When Musa reached there, he was called: Blessed is whoever is in the fire and whoever is around it, and glorified is Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. (: Surah An-Naml: 8)
