Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Abu Talib fell ill and the Quraysh came to him, and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also arrived to visit him. There was space for one person to sit by his head, when Abu Jahl stood up and sat in that place. The people, complaining about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), said: "Abu Talib! Your nephew speaks ill of our gods." Abu Talib said: "Your people are complaining about you, what is the reason?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O uncle! I want them to say such a word, by which the Arabs will become subservient to them and the non-Arabs will pay them jizya." He said: "What is that word?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah)." Hearing this, those people stood up and said: "Has he made all the gods into one god?" Then this Qur'an was revealed: Saad. By the Qur'an full of reminder! But the disbelievers are in pride and opposition. We destroyed many generations before them; they cried out, but it was not the time for escape. And the disbelievers are astonished that a warner has come to them from among themselves, and they say: 'This is a sorcerer, a great liar. Has he made all the gods into one god? This is indeed a strange thing.'" (Surah Saad: 1 to 5)

Syedna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said to his uncle: Say "There is no god but Allah," and I will testify on your behalf because of it on the Day of Resurrection. He replied: If it were not that the Quraysh would reproach me by saying that weakness has led Abu Talib to utter this word, I would say this word and bring coolness to your eyes. Then Allah Almighty revealed: Surely, you do not guide whom you love.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Go and take a bath, and then come to me without doing any other work. So I took a bath and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made such supplications for me that I would not prefer to have red and black camels in place of them. After that, whenever Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) would give a bath to a deceased person, he would also bathe himself.
