Fath al-Rabbani

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) mentioned Sayyida Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her). Her father did not wish for her to marry the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). So Sayyida prepared food and drink and invited her father and a group of the Quraysh. They ate the food and drank the beverage until they became intoxicated. Then Sayyida Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to her father: Indeed, Muhammad bin Abdullah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) has sent me a marriage proposal, so marry me to him. So, in his state of intoxication, he married her off. Sayyida applied perfume (khaluq) to her father and dressed him in a garment; this was the custom with the bride’s father in the days of ignorance. When his intoxication wore off, he saw that he was perfumed with khaluq and dressed in a garment. He said: What is my situation? What is this? Sayyida said: You have married me to Muhammad bin Abdullah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). He said: Shall I marry (my daughter) to Abu Talib’s orphan? No, by my life! No! Sayyida Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Are you not ashamed? Do you want to make yourself appear foolish among the Quraysh? Do you want to tell people that you were intoxicated? So she persisted with him until he became pleased.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Tufail (may Allah be pleased with him), who was mentioning the construction of the Ka'bah during the time of ignorance. He said: The Quraysh demolished the Ka'bah and then began to build it with stones from the valley. They would carry stones on their necks. They raised the building to a height of twenty cubits. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would also bring stones from Ajyad, carrying them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) had tied a striped sheet, which was narrow. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to place it on his shoulder, due to its small size, his private parts began to show. Someone called out: O Muhammad! Cover your private parts. In another narration, it is said: Then he was called out: Do not uncover your private parts. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) threw down the stone and tied his sheet. After that, he (peace and blessings be upon him) was never seen in a naked state.

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was carrying the stones of the Ka'bah with the people. He (peace and blessings be upon him) had tied a waistcloth. His (peace and blessings be upon him) uncle, Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), said: "Nephew! If you open your waistcloth and place it on your shoulder under the stones, it will be better." So, as soon as he (peace and blessings be upon him) opened his waistcloth and placed it on his shoulder, he (peace and blessings be upon him) fell unconscious. After that, he (peace and blessings be upon him) was never seen naked.

Sayyiduna Sa’ib bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he too was among those who built the Ka’bah during the era of ignorance. He says: I had a stone, I would carve it with my own hands and then worship it, leaving Allah aside. The clotted milk over which I was miserly with myself, I would bring and pour it over that idol. Then a dog would come and lick it, and then lift one leg and urinate on it. So, when we reached the place of Hajar al-Aswad during the construction of the House of Allah, and no one was looking at the Hajar al-Aswad, while it was lying among the stones like a man’s head, and (it was so shiny that) a man’s face could be seen in it, a clan (sub-tribe) of the Quraysh said: We will install this stone in its place. Other people said: We will place it. Then they said: Select one man among yourselves as an arbitrator. Then they said: Whoever comes first from that open path, he will decide. Just then, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appeared from there. Everyone said: The Trustworthy one has come. The people explained the details to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed the stone in a cloth and then called their tribes. They held the corners of the cloth and lifted it, and then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) installed it in its place.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both), he says: My maternal aunt, the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: If your people had not recently abandoned polytheism or the era of ignorance, I would have demolished the Ka'bah, brought its door level with the ground, and made two doors—one to the east and one to the west—and I would have added six cubits to it from the side of Hatim, because when the Quraysh rebuilt it, they had reduced its size.

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If your people had not recently emerged from the period of disbelief, I would have demolished the Ka'bah and rebuilt it upon the foundations of Ibrahim (peace be upon him). When the Quraysh constructed it, they reduced its size, and I would have also placed a door at the back of it.
