بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي الْقَصَّاصِينَ
Chapter: What has been reported regarding storytellers
Hadith 10422
عَنْ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ الْخَوْلَانِيِّ قَالَ دَخَلَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَسْجِدَ فَإِذَا كَعْبٌ يَقُصُّ فَقَالَ مَنْ هَذَا قَالُوا كَعْبٌ يَقُصُّ فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ لَا يَقُصُّ إِلَّا أَمِيرٌ أَوْ مَأْمُورٌ أَوْ مُخْتَالٌ قَالَ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ كَعْبًا فَمَا رُئِيَ يَقُصُّ بَعْدُ
It is narrated from Abdul Jabbar Khawlani, he says: A companion entered the mosque while Sayyiduna Ka'b was giving a sermon. He said: What is this? The people said: Sayyiduna Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) is giving a sermon. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: No one relates stories except an Amir, or one who is commanded, or an arrogant person. When Sayyiduna Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) came to know of this, he was not found giving sermons thereafter.
Hadith 10423
عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا يَقُصُّ عَلَى النَّاسِ إِلَّا أَمِيرٌ أَوْ مَأْمُورٌ أَوْ مُرَاءٍ
Narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No one relates stories to the people except a leader, or one who is commanded, or a show-off.
Hadith 10424
عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَشْجَعِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ لَا يَقُصُّ عَلَى النَّاسِ إِلَّا أَمِيرٌ أَوْ مَأْمُورٌ أَوْ مُخْتَالٌ (وَفِي لَفْظٍ) لَا يَقُصُّ إِلَّا أَمِيرٌ أَوْ مَأْمُورٌ أَوْ مُتَكَلِّفٌ
Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No one tells stories to people except a leader, one who is appointed, or an arrogant person. In another narration, it is stated: No one delivers admonition except a leader, one who is appointed, or one who affects artificiality. Here, "telling stories" refers to giving admonition and advice. That is why the one who gives admonition and advice is called a "Qaas."
Hadith 10425
عَنِ السَّائِبِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ قَالَ إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ يُقَصُّ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَا أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَكَانَ أَوَّلُ مَنْ قَصَّ تَمِيمًا الدَّارِيَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنْ يَقُصَّ عَلَى النَّاسِ قَائِمًا فَأَذِنَ لَهُ عُمَرُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'ib bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) that during the times of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), stories were not narrated. Sayyiduna Tamim Dari (may Allah be pleased with him) was the first to do this. He first sought permission from Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) to stand before the people and narrate stories, so he granted him permission.
Hadith 10426
حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمٌ ثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ مَيْسَرَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ كُرْدُوسَ بْنَ قَيْسٍ وَكَانَ قَاصَّ الْعَامَّةِ بِالْكُوفَةِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ بَدْرٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ لَأَنْ أَقْعُدَ فِي مِثْلِ هَذَا الْمَجْلِسِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أُعْتِقَ أَرْبَعَ رِقَابٍ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ فَقُلْتُ أَيُّ مَجْلِسٍ تَعْنِي قَالَ كَانَ قَاصًّا
Kardus bin Qais, who used to preach and advise the common people in Kufa, narrates: One of the companions from among the people of Badr told me that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Sitting in a gathering of this kind is more beloved to me than freeing four slaves. Imam Shu’bah says: I asked, “Which kind of gathering does the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, mean?” He said: A gathering of preaching and advice.
Hadith 10427
قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ سَمِعْتُ مُصْعَبَ بْنَ الزُّبَيْرِيِّ قَالَ جَاءَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ الْقَاصُّ عَلَى مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ إِنَّ قَوْمًا قَدْ نَهَوْنِي أَنْ أَقُصَّ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَعَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ وَعَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِ فَقَالَ مَالِكٌ حَدِّثْ بِهِ وَقُصَّ بِهِ
Mus'ab Zubayri says: The storyteller Abu Talhah asked Imam Malik bin Anas, may Allah have mercy on him: O Abu Abdullah! Some people have forbidden me from narrating this hadith: May Allah send mercy upon Ibrahim (peace be upon him), surely You are Praiseworthy and Glorious, and upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and upon his wives? Imam Malik said: You should narrate this hadith.
Hadith 10428
عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى قَاصٍّ يَقُصُّ فَأَمْسَكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قُصَّ فَلَانْ أَقْعُدَ غُدْوَةً إِلَى أَنْ تُشْرِقَ الشَّمْسُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أُعْتِقَ أَرْبَعَ رِقَابٍ وَبَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ حَتَّى تَغْرُبَ الشَّمْسُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أُعْتِقَ أَرْبَعَ رِقَابٍ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a storyteller who was narrating stories, but when he saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he stopped. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Continue storytelling. If I sit in such a gathering from the Fajr prayer until sunrise, it is more beloved to me than freeing four necks (slaves). If I sit from Asr until sunset, this deed is also more beloved to me than freeing four slaves.
