بَابُ فِي الأمْرِ بِالتَّوْبَةِ وَفَرْحِ اللَّهِ عَزَّوَجَلَّ بِهَا بعَبْدِهِ الْمُؤْمِنِ
Chapter: On the command to repent and Allah Almighty's joy at His believing servant's repentance
Hadith 10149
عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْأَغَرَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ جُهَيْنَةَ يُحَدِّثُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ ((يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ تُوبُوا إِلَى رَبِّكُمْ فَإِنِّي أَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ فِي الْيَوْمِ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ))
A man from the Juhaina tribe, Aghar, used to narrate to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: O people! Repent to your Lord, for indeed I repent to Allah one hundred times in a single day.
Hadith 10150
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ ((وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لَأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ فِي الْيَوْمِ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ سَبْعِينَ مَرَّةً))
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By Allah, indeed I seek forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times in a day.
Hadith 10151
عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ تُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ وَاسْتَغْفِرُوهُ فَإِنِّي أَتُوبُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَأَسْتَغْفِرُهُ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ)) فَقُلْتُ لَهُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ اثْنَتَانِ أَمْ وَاحِدَةٌ فَقَالَ هُوَ ذَاكَ أَوْ نَحْوُ هَذَا
Sayyiduna Abu Burdah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from a Companion that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O people! Repent to Allah and seek forgiveness from Him, for indeed I repent to Allah and seek forgiveness from Him one hundred times each day. The narrator asked: Should this supplication be counted twice or once: "Allahumma inni astaghfiruka, Allahumma inni atubu ilayk" (O Allah! Indeed I seek Your forgiveness, indeed I turn to You in repentance)? He replied: This is counted as once.
Hadith 10152
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ مِثْلُهُ وَفِيهِ بَعْدَ قَوْلِهِ ((مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ)) أَوْ ((أَكْثَرَ مِنْ مِائَةِ مَرَّةٍ))
(In another chain) It is narrated that he used to do it one hundred times or more than one hundred times.
Hadith 10153
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ إِذَا أَذْنَبَ كَانَتْ نُكْتَةً سَوْدَاءَ فِي قَلْبِهِ فَإِنْ تَابَ وَنَزَعَ وَاسْتَغْفَرَ صُقِلَ قَلْبُهُ وَإِنْ زَادَ زَادَتْ حَتَّى يَعْلُوَ قَلْبَهُ ذَاكَ الرَّيْنُ الَّذِي ذَكَرَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي الْقُرْآنِ {كَلَّا بَلْ رَانَ عَلَى قُلُوبِهِمْ مَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ}))
Syedna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When a believer commits a sin, a black spot appears on his heart. If he repents and seeks forgiveness, his heart becomes bright and polished. But if he continues to sin, the spots increase until his heart is completely covered with rust, as Allah Almighty mentioned in this verse: Never! Rather, the rust has covered their hearts because of what they used to earn.
Hadith 10154
عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ حَدِيثَيْنِ أَحَدَهُمَا عَنْ نَفْسِهِ وَالْآخَرَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ يَرَى ذُنُوبَهُ كَأَنَّهُ فِي أَصْلِ جَبَلٍ يَخَافُ أَنْ يَقَعَ عَلَيْهِ وَإِنَّ الْفَاجِرَ يَرَى ذُنُوبَهُ كَذُبَابٍ وَقَعَ عَلَى أَنْفِهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ هَكَذَا فَطَارَ وَقَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((اللَّهُ أَفْرَحُ بِتَوْبَةِ أَحَدِكُمْ مِنْ رَجُلٍ خَرَجَ بِأَرْضٍ دَوِّيَّةٍ مَهْلَكَةٍ مَعَهُ رَاحِلَتُهُ عَلَيْهَا طَعَامُهُ وَشَرَابُهُ وَزَادُهُ وَمَا يُصْلِحُهُ فَأَضَلَّهَا فَخَرَجَ فِي طَلَبِهَا حَتَّى إِذَا أَدْرَكَهُ الْمَوْتُ فَلَمْ يَجِدْهَا قَالَ أَرْجِعُ إِلَى مَكَانِي الَّذِي أَضْلَلْتُهَا فِيهِ فَأَمُوتُ فِيهِ قَالَ فَأَتَى مَكَانَهُ فَغَلَبَتْهُ عَيْنُهُ فَاسْتَيْقَظَ فَإِذَا رَاحِلَتُهُ عِنْدَ رَأْسِهِ عَلَيْهَا طَعَامُهُ وَشَرَابُهُ وَزَادُهُ وَمَا يُصْلِحُهُ))
It is narrated from Harith bin Suwaid, he says: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated two hadiths to us, one was his own saying and the other was a hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He himself said: Indeed, a believer considers his sins as if he is standing beneath a mountain and fears that the mountain may fall upon him, whereas a wicked person considers his sins like a fly that sits on his nose and he just swats it away like this. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty is more pleased with the repentance of a servant than that person who is in a barren and deadly wilderness, with him is his riding animal on which are loaded his food, drink, provisions, and other necessities. Then that riding animal is lost from him, he searches for it until he is overtaken by death, then he says: Now I will return to the place where I lost my riding animal, and going there, he dies. Then he returns to his place and sleeps there, and when he wakes up, his riding animal is standing beside him, and on it are his food, drink, provisions, and other necessities.
Hadith 10155
عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ نَحْوَهُ وَفِيهِ ((فَإِذَا هُوَ بِهَا تَجُرُّ خِطَامَهَا فَمَا هُوَ بِأَشَدَّ بِهَا فَرَحًا مِنَ اللَّهِ بِتَوْبَةِ عَبْدِهِ إِذَا تَابَ))
A similar hadith is narrated from Sayyiduna Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him), but its wording is slightly different: Thus, the mount was standing by him and pulling its reins. The happiness that Allah Almighty feels due to His servant’s repentance, this man was not happier than that.
Hadith 10156
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((أَيَفْرَحُ بِرَاحِلَتِهِ إِذَا ضَلَّتْ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ وَجَدَهَا)) قَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ ((وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ اللَّهُ أَشَدُّ فَرَحًا بِتَوْبَةِ عَبْدِهِ إِذَا تَابَ مِنْ أَحَدِكُمْ بِرَاحِلَتِهِ إِذَا وَجَدَهَا))
Syedna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When a man's mount is lost, does he rejoice upon finding it? The people said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By Him in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Allah is more pleased with His servant's repentance than any of you is upon finding his lost mount.
Hadith 10157
عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى يَبْسُطُ يَدَهُ بِاللَّيْلِ لِيَتُوبَ مُسِيءُ النَّهَارِ وَيَبْسُطُ يَدَهُ بِالنَّهَارِ لِيَتُوبَ مُسِيءُ اللَّيْلِ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Verily, Allah Almighty stretches out His hand at night so that the one who sinned during the day may repent, and He stretches out His hand during the day so that the one who sinned at night may repent. This will continue until the sun rises from the west.
Hadith 10158
عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ ((إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى يَقُولُ يَا عِبَادِي كُلُّكُمْ مُذْنِبٌ إِلَّا مَنْ عَافَيْتُ فَاسْتَغْفِرُونِي أَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ وَمَنْ عَلِمَ مِنْكُمْ أَنِّي ذُو قُدْرَةٍ عَلَى الْمَغْفِرَةِ فَاسْتَغْفَرَنِي بِقُدْرَتِي غَفَرْتُ لَهُ وَلَا أُبَالِي وَكُلُّكُمْ ضَالٌّ إِلَّا مَنْ هَدَيْتُ فَسَلُونِي الْهُدَى أَهْدِكُمْ وَكُلُّكُمْ فَقِيرٌ إِلَّا مَنْ أَغْنَيْتُ فَسَلُونِي أَرْزُقْكُمْ وَلَوْ أَنَّ حَيَّكُمْ وَمَيِّتَكُمْ وَأَوَّلَكُمْ وَآخِرَكُمْ وَرَطْبَكُمْ وَيَابِسَكُمْ اجْتَمَعُوا عَلَى قَلْبِ أَتْقَى عَبْدٍ مِنْ عِبَادِي لَمْ يَزِيدُوا فِي مُلْكِي جَنَاحَ بَعُوضَةٍ وَلَوْ أَنَّ حَيَّكُمْ وَمَيِّتَكُمْ وَأَوَّلَكُمْ وَآخِرَكُمْ وَرَطْبَكُمْ وَيَابِسَكُمْ اجْتَمَعُوا فَسَأَلَ كُلُّ سَائِلٍ مِنْهُمْ مَا بَلَغَتْ أُمْنِيَّتُهُ وَأَعْطَيْتُ كُلَّ سَائِلٍ لَمْ يَنْقُصْنِي إِلَّا كَمَا لَوْ مَرَّ أَحَدُكُمْ عَلَى شَفَةِ الْبَحْرِ فَغَمَسَ إِبْرَةً ثُمَّ انْتَزَعَهَا وَذَلِكَ لِأَنِّي جَوَّادٌ مَاجِدٌ وَاجِدٌ أَفْعَلُ مَا أَشَاءُ عَطَائِي كَلَامِي وَعَذَابِي كَلَامِي إِذَا أَرَدْتُ شَيْئًا فَإِنَّمَا أَقُولُ لَهُ كُنْ فَيَكُونُ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Verily, Allah Almighty says: O My servants! All of you are sinners, except the one whom I grant well-being, so seek forgiveness from Me, I will forgive you. Whoever realizes that I have power over forgiveness and then seeks forgiveness from Me because of My power, I will forgive him and I do not care. O My servants! All of you were astray, except the one whom I have guided, so ask Me for guidance, I will guide you. All of you were poor, except the one whom I have enriched, so ask Me, I will provide for you. If the living and the dead among you, the first and the last, the moist and the dry, were to gather together upon the heart of the most pious man among My servants, it would not increase My dominion by even as much as the wing of a mosquito. Likewise, if the living and the dead among you, the first and the last, the moist and the dry, were to gather together and every supplicant were to ask for whatever he desired, and I were to give each supplicant what he asked for, it would not decrease what is with Me except as much as a needle decreases the sea when it is dipped into it and then taken out. This is because I am Generous, Majestic, Rich; I do whatever I will. My giving is My word, My punishment is My word. When I intend a thing, I only say to it: Be, and it is.
Hadith 10159
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ ((إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَقُولُ يَا عَبْدِي مَا عَبَدْتَنِي وَرَجَوْتَنِي فَإِنِّي غَافِرٌ لَكَ عَلَى مَا كَانَ فِيكَ وَيَا عَبْدِي إِنْ لَقِيتَنِي بِقُرَابِ الْأَرْضِ خَطِيئَةً مَا لَمْ تُشْرِكْ بِي لَقِيتُكَ بِقُرَابِهَا مَغْفِرَةً)) الْحَدِيثَ نَحْوَ مَا تَقَدَّمَ
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Verily, Allah the Exalted says: O My servant! As long as you worship Me and keep hope in Me, I will forgive you every sin you have committed, whatever it may be. O My servant! If you come to Me with sins filling the earth, I will come to you with forgiveness equal to it, provided that you did not associate partners with Me... After this, it is as in the previous hadith.
Hadith 10160
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِيمَا يَرْوِي عَنْ رَبِّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ((إِنِّي حَرَّمْتُ عَلَى نَفْسِي الظُّلْمَ وَعَلَى عِبَادِي أَلَا فَلَا تَظَالَمُوا كُلُّ بَنِي آدَمَ يُخْطِئُ بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ ثُمَّ يَسْتَغْفِرُنِي فَأَغْفِرُ لَهُ وَلَا أُبَالِي وَقَالَ يَا بَنِي آدَمَ كُلُّكُمْ كَانَ ضَالًّا إِلَّا مَنْ هَدَيْتُ وَكُلُّكُمْ كَانَ عَارِيًا إِلَّا مَنْ كَسَوْتُ وَكُلُّكُمْ كَانَ جَائِعًا إِلَّا مَنْ أَطْعَمْتُ وَكُلُّكُمْ كَانَ ظَمْآنًا إِلَّا مَنْ سَقَيْتُ فَاسْتَهْدُونِي أَهْدِكُمْ وَاسْتَكْسُونِي أَكْسُكُمْ وَاسْتَطْعِمُونِي أُطْعِمْكُمْ وَاسْتَسْقُونِي أَسْقِكُمْ يَا عِبَادِي لَوْ أَنَّ أَوَّلَكُمْ وَآخِرَكُمْ وَجِنَّكُمْ وَإِنْسَكُمْ وَصَغِيرَكُمْ وَكَبِيرَكُمْ وَذَكَرَكُمْ وَأُنْثَاكُمْ قَالَ عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ وَعَيِّيكُمْ وَبَيِّنَكُمْ عَلَى قَلْبِ أَتْقَاكُمْ رَجُلًا وَاحِدًا لَمْ تَزِيدُوا فِي مُلْكِي شَيْئًا وَلَوْ أَنَّ أَوَّلَكُمْ وَآخِرَكُمْ وَجِنَّكُمْ وَإِنْسَكُمْ وَصَغِيرَكُمْ وَكَبِيرَكُمْ وَذَكَرَكُمْ وَأُنْثَاكُمْ عَلَى قَلْبِ أَكْفَرِكُمْ رَجُلًا لَمْ تَنْقُصُوا مِنْ مُلْكِي شَيْئًا إِلَّا كَمَا يَنْقُصُ رَأْسُ الْمِخْيَطِ مِنَ الْبَحْرِ))
Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrates that it is reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Allah Almighty said: Verily, I have made oppression unlawful for Myself and for My servants, so do not oppress one another. Every son of Adam commits mistakes day and night, but when he seeks forgiveness from Me, I forgive him without any concern. O sons of Adam! Each one of you is astray except the one whom I guide. Each one of you is naked except the one whom I clothe. Each one of you is hungry except the one whom I feed. And each one of you is thirsty except the one whom I give drink. Therefore, seek guidance from Me, I will guide you. Ask Me for clothing, I will clothe you. Ask Me for food, I will feed you. And ask Me for water, I will give you water. If all of you, the first and the last, the jinn and mankind, the small and the great, the men and the women, the mute and the eloquent, all become like the heart of the most pious among you, you will not increase My kingdom in the least. And if all of you, the first and the last, the jinn and mankind, the small and the great, the male and the female, all become like the heart of the most disbelieving among you, you will not decrease My kingdom in the least, except as much as a needle decreases the water of the sea when dipped into it.
Hadith 10161
عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الْأَغَرِّ قَالَ أَشْهَدُ عَلَى أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ وَأَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّهُمَا شَهِدَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يُمْهِلُ حَتَّى يَذْهَبَ ثُلُثُ اللَّيْلِ ثُمَّ يَنْزِلُ فَيَقُولُ هَلْ مِنْ سَائِلٍ هَلْ مِنْ تَائِبٍ هَلْ مِنْ مُسْتَغْفِرٍ هَلْ مِنْ مُذْنِبٍ قَالَ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ حَتَّى يَطْلُعَ الْفَجْرُ قَالَ نَعَمْ
Agharr says: I bear witness to Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) and Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that they bore witness to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Indeed, Allah Almighty grants respite until a third of the night has passed, then Allah Almighty descends (towards the heaven of the world) and says: Is there anyone who asks? Is there anyone who repents? Is there anyone who seeks forgiveness? Is there any sinner? A man said: Does this continue until the break of dawn? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes.
Hadith 10162
عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كُلُّ ابْنِ آدَمَ خَطَّاءٌ فَخَيْرُ الْخَطَّائِينَ التَّوَّابُونَ وَلَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَيْنِ مِنْ مَالٍ لَابْتَغَى لَهُمَا ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ وَيَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ
Narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Every son of Adam is a sinner, and the best of sinners are those who repent much. If the son of Adam possesses two valleys of wealth, he will seek a third one. Nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except dust, and Allah accepts the repentance of the one who repents.
Hadith 10163
عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَنَفِيَّةِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْعَبْدَ الْمُؤْمِنَ الْمُفَتَّنَ التَّوَّابَ
Muhammad bin Hanafiyyah narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah Almighty loves that believing servant who is put into trial and then repents.
Hadith 10164
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنِّي لَأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, I seek forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance one hundred times every day.
Hadith 10165
عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ كَانَ فِي لِسَانِي ذَرَبٌ عَلَى أَهْلِي لَمْ أَعْدُهُ إِلَى غَيْرِهِمْ وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ وَكَانَ ذَلِكَ لَا يَعْدُوهُمْ إِلَى غَيْرِهِمْ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ أَيْنَ أَنْتَ مِنَ الِاسْتِغْفَارِ يَا حُذَيْفَةُ إِنِّي لَأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ قَالَ فَذَكَرْتُهُ لِأَبِي بُرْدَةَ بْنِ أَبِي مُوسَى يَعْنِي الْأَشْعَرِيَّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا فَحَدَّثَنِي عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنِّي لَأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ وَلَيْلَةٍ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: There was sharpness and corruption in my tongue, but it was only related to my family members, it did not go beyond them. When I mentioned this matter to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Hudhayfah! Why do you stay away from seeking forgiveness? I seek forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance one hundred times every day. When I related this to Abu Burdah bin Abi Musa, he narrated to me from Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, I seek forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance one hundred times every day and night.
