بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي ذَمُ الدُّنْيَا
Chapter: What has been reported regarding the condemnation of the world
Hadith 10069
عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ إِنَّ أَخْوَفَ مَا أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ مَا يُخْرِجُ اللَّهُ مِنْ نَبَاتِ الْأَرْضِ وَزَهْرَةِ الدُّنْيَا فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ أَيْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَوَ يَأْتِي الْخَيْرُ بِالشَّرِّ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى رَأَيْنَا أَنَّهُ يَنْزِلُ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ وَغَشِيَهُ بُهْرٌ وَعَرِقَ فَقَالَ أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ فَقَالَ هَا أَنَا وَلَمْ أُرِدْ إِلَّا خَيْرًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ الْخَيْرَ لَا يَأْتِي إِلَّا بِالْخَيْرِ إِنَّ الْخَيْرَ لَا يَأْتِي إِلَّا بِالْخَيْرِ إِنَّ الْخَيْرَ لَا يَأْتِي إِلَّا بِالْخَيْرِ وَلَكِنَّ الدُّنْيَا خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ وَكُلُّ مَا يُنْبِتُ الرَّبِيعُ يَقْتُلُ حَبَطًا أَوْ يُلِمُّ إِلَّا آكِلَةَ الْخَضِرِ فَإِنَّهَا أَكَلَتْ حَتَّى امْتَدَّتْ خَاصِرَتَاهَا وَاسْتَقْبَلَتِ الشَّمْسَ فَثَلَطَتْ وَبَالَتْ ثُمَّ عَادَتْ فَأَكَلَتْ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهَا بِحَقِّهَا بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهَا وَمَنْ أَخَذَهَا بِغَيْرِ حَقِّهَا لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْإِمَامِ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ قَالَ أَبِي قَالَ سُفْيَانُ وَكَانَ الْأَعْمَشُ يَسْأَلُنِي عَنْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said from the pulpit: Indeed, what I fear most for you is that which Allah will bring forth for you from the earth in the form of its grapes and the wealth and luxuries of the world. A man said: O Messenger of Allah! Does good also bring evil? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent until we saw that revelation began to descend upon him, his breathing became heavy, and he began to sweat profusely. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Where is the questioner? He said: Here I am, and my intention was only for good. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, good only brings good, indeed, good only brings good, indeed, good only brings good. The real matter is that this world is lush and sweet; whatever the spring grows, due to swelling, it either kills or brings close to death. An animal keeps eating fodder until its belly is full, then it lies in the sun, passes thin dung and urine, and then starts eating again. The point is, whoever acquires the world with its due right, there will be blessing in it for him, and whoever takes it without right, there will be no blessing in it for him; rather, he will be like the one who eats but is never satisfied.
Hadith 10070
عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى عَلَى قَتْلَى أُحُدٍ بَعْدَ ثَمَانِ سِنِينَ كَالْمُوَدِّعِ لِلْأَحْيَاءِ وَالْأَمْوَاتِ ثُمَّ طَلَعَ الْمِنْبَرَ فَقَالَ إِنِّي فَرَطُكُمْ وَأَنَا عَلَيْكُمْ شَهِيدٌ وَإِنَّ مَوْعِدَكُمُ الْحَوْضُ وَإِنِّي لَأَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ وَلَسْتُ أَخْشَى عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ تُشْرِكُوا أَوْ قَالَ تَكْفُرُوا وَلَكِنِ الدُّنْيَا أَنْ تَتَنَافَسُوا فِيهَا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer for the martyrs of the Battle of Uhud eight years later. It seemed as if he was bidding farewell to the living and the dead. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit and said: I will precede you and will bear witness for you. Surely, your promised place is the Pond, and I am looking at it right now. I do not fear shirk for you, but I fear the world, that you may become engrossed in it. In one narration, the word "kufr" is mentioned instead of "shirk".
Hadith 10071
عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ دُنْيَاهُ أَضَرَّ بِآخِرَتِهِ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ آخِرَتَهُ أَضَرَّ بِدُنْيَاهُ فَآثِرُوا مَا يَبْقَى عَلَى مَا يَفْنَى
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Whoever loves his worldly life will harm his Hereafter, and whoever prefers his Hereafter will harm his worldly life. So give preference to that which is everlasting over that which is perishable.
Hadith 10072
عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَنْ كَانَ هَمُّهُ الْآخِرَةَ جَمَعَ اللَّهُ شَمْلَهُ وَجَعَلَ غِنَاهُ فِي قَلْبِهِ وَأَتَتْهُ الدُّنْيَا وَهِيَ رَاغِمَةٌ وَمَنْ كَانَ نِيَّتُهُ الدُّنْيَا فَرَّقَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ ضَيْعَتَهُ وَجَعَلَ فَقْرَهُ بَيْنَ عَيْنَيْهِ وَلَمْ يَأْتِهِ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا مَا كُتِبَ لَهُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever’s concern is the Hereafter, Allah Almighty arranges his affairs, enriches his heart, and the world comes to him humbled (according to what is destined for him). But whoever’s worry and grief is only for the world, Allah scatters his matters, places poverty and need between his eyes, and he receives from the world only that which has already been decreed for him.
Hadith 10073
عَنْ عُبَيْدٍ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ أَنَّ أَبَا مَالِكٍ الْأَشْعَرِيَّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ لَمَّا حَضَرَتْهُ الْوَفَاةُ قَالَ يَا سَامِعَ الْأَشْعَرِيِّينَ لِيُبَلِّغْ مِنْكُمُ الْغَائِبَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ حُلْوَةُ الدُّنْيَا مُرَّةُ الْآخِرَةِ وَمُرَّةُ الدُّنْيَا حُلْوَةُ الْآخِرَةِ
It is narrated from Ubaid Hazrami that when the time of death of Sayyiduna Abu Malik Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) approached, he said: O group of Ash'aris! Let my words reach those who are absent through those who are present. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: The pleasure of this world is the bitterness of the Hereafter, and the bitterness of this world is the pleasure and sweetness of the Hereafter.
Hadith 10074
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ لِثَوْبَانَ كَيْفَ أَنْتَ يَا ثَوْبَانُ إِذَا تَدَاعَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْأُمَمُ كَتَدَاعِيكُمْ عَلَى قَصْعَةِ الطَّعَامِ يُصِيبُونَ مِنْهُ قَالَ ثَوْبَانُ بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قِلَّةٌ بِنَا قَالَ لَا أَنْتُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ كَثِيرٌ وَلَكِنْ يُلْقَى فِي قُلُوبِكُمُ الْوَهْنُ قَالُوا وَمَا الْوَهْنُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ حُبُّكُمُ الدُّنْيَا وَكَرَاهِيَتُكُمْ لِلْقِتَالِ
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said to Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him): O Thawban! What will be your condition when people from other nations will rush upon you just as people rush upon a dish of food? Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you, will we be few in number at that time? He (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: No, you will be great in number, but weakness will be cast into your hearts. The people asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is this weakness? He (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Love of the world and dislike of jihad is called weakness.
Hadith 10075
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الدُّنْيَا سِجْنُ الْمُؤْمِنِ وَجَنَّةُ الْكَافِرِ
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the disbeliever.
Hadith 10076
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ الدُّنْيَا سِجْنُ الْمُؤْمِنِ وَسَنَتُهُ فَإِذَا فَارَقَ الدُّنْيَا فَارَقَ السِّجْنَ وَالسَّنَةَ
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: The world is a prison and a famine for the believer; when he departs from the world, he is separated from the prison and the famine.
Hadith 10077
- عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَامَ فِي أَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ: ((الْفَقْرَ تَخَافُونَ أَوِ الْعَوَزَ أَوْ تُهِمُّكُمُ الدُّنْيَا، فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ فَاتِحٌ لَكُمْ أَرْضَ فَارِسَ وَالرُّومِ وَتُصَبُّ عَلَيْكُمُ الدُّنْيَا صَبًّا حَتَّى لَا يُزِيغُكُمْ بَعْدِي إِنْ أَزَاغَكُمْ إِلَّا هِيَ)).
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among his companions and said: "Do you fear poverty and destitution? Is your worry the world? Indeed, Allah Almighty is going to grant you victory over the kingdoms of Persia and Rome. The world will pour upon you in such abundance that nothing will mislead you except this very world."
Hadith 10078
عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ كَانَتْ نَاقَةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ تُسَمَّى الْعَضْبَاءَ وَكَانَتْ لَا تُسْبَقُ فَجَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ عَلَى قَعُودٍ فَسَبَقَهَا فَشَقَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَلَمَّا رَأَى مَا فِي وُجُوهِهِمْ قَالُوا سُبِقَتِ الْعَضْبَاءُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ حَقًّا عَلَى اللَّهِ أَنْ لَا يَرْفَعَ شَيْئًا مِنَ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا وَضَعَهُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) had a she-camel named ‘Adba’, and no other camel could surpass her. Then one day, a Bedouin came riding his camel and overtook her. This was very hard on the Muslims. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) noticed their distress on their faces, he himself said, “Adba has been left behind.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: “It is a right upon Allah that whatever He raises in this world, He will also lower it.”
Hadith 10079
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الدُّنْيَا دَارُ مَنْ لَا دَارَ لَهُ وَلَهَا يَجْمَعُ مَنْ لَا عَقْلَ لَهُ
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The world is the home of the one who has no home, and the person who is devoid of intellect gathers it for himself.
