بَابُ مَا يَجُوزُ مِنَ الْمَدْحِ
Chapter on what praise is permissible
Hadith 10027
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا أَحَدَ أَغْيَرُ مِنَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَلِذَلِكَ حَرَّمَ الْفَوَاحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ وَلَا أَحَدَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْهِ الْمَدْحُ مِنَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No one is more protective than Allah Almighty, and that is why He has forbidden every kind of evil, both outward and inward. And there is no one to whom praise is more beloved than Allah Almighty.
Hadith 10028
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) مِثْلُهُ وَزَادَ وَلِذَلِكَ مَدَحَ نَفْسَهُ بَعْدَ قَوْلِهِ مِنَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ
(Second chain) A similar hadith is narrated, however, at the end of it these additional words are present: That is why Allah Almighty has praised Himself.
Hadith 10029
عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ سَرِيعٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَلَا أُنْشِدُكَ مَحَامِدَ حَمِدْتُ بِهَا رَبِّي تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى قَالَ أَمَا إِنَّ رَبَّكَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يُحِبُّ الْمَدْحَ
. (Second chain) A similar hadith is narrated, however, at the end of it there are these additional words: That is why Allah Almighty has praised Himself. Through it, have I praised my Lord? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Beware! Indeed, your Lord loves praise.
Hadith 10030
عَنْ مُطَرِّفِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الشِّخِّيرِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ قَدْ وَفَدَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي رَهْطٍ مِنْ بَنِي عَامِرٍ قَالَ فَأَتَيْنَاهُ فَسَلَّمْنَا عَلَيْهِ فَقُلْنَا أَنْتَ وَلِيُّنَا وَأَنْتَ سَيِّدُنَا وَأَنْتَ أَطْوَلُ عَلَيْنَا قَالَ يُونُسُ وَأَنْتَ أَطْوَلُ عَلَيْنَا طَوْلًا وَأَنْتَ أَفْضَلُ عَلَيْنَا فَضْلًا وَأَنْتَ الْجَفْنَةُ الْغَرَّاءُ فَقَالَ قُولُوا قَوْلَكُمْ وَلَا يَسْتَجْرِيَنَّكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ قَالَ وَرُبَمَا قَالَ وَلَا يَسْتَهْوِيَنَّكُمْ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Shikhkhir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he, along with some companions from Banu Amir, came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and described the incident as follows: So we went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: You are our friend, you are our leader, you are very kind and gracious to us, you excel us in virtue, and you are very generous. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Speak with purpose; never let Satan ensnare you in his trap.
Hadith 10031
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أَنْتَ سَيِّدُ قُرَيْشٍ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ السَّيِّدُ اللَّهُ فَقَالَ أَنْتَ أَفْضَلُهَا فِيهَا قَوْلًا وَأَعْظَمُهَا فِيهَا طَوْلًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِيَقُلْ أَحَدُكُمْ بِقَوْلِهِ وَلَا يَسْتَجِرَّنَّهُ الشَّيْطَانُ أَوِ الشَّيَاطِينُ
(Second chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Shukhair (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "You are the chief of the Quraysh." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "The chief is Allah." Then he said: "You are the best among us in terms of speech, and the most generous and kind." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Everyone should speak according to his purpose, and never let Satan make anyone subservient to himself."
Hadith 10032
عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ زُهَيْرٍ الثَّقَفِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالنَّبَاءَةِ أَوِ النَّبَاوَةِ شَكَّ نَافِعٌ مِنَ الطَّائِفِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّكُمْ تُوشِكُونَ أَنْ تَعْرِفُوا أَهْلَ الْجَنَّةِ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ أَوْ قَالَ خِيَارَكُمْ مِنْ شِرَارِكُمْ قَالَ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ بِمَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ بِالثَّنَاءِ السَّيِّئِ وَالثَّنَاءِ الْحَسَنِ وَأَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللَّهِ بَعْضُكُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zuhair Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying at the place of Nabawah in Ta’if: O people! Surely, the time is near when you will recognize the people of Paradise and the people of Hell, or the righteous and the wicked. A man said: O Messenger of Allah! How is that? You (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Through bad and good praise; in reality, you are Allah’s witnesses over one another in giving testimony.
Hadith 10033
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ الرَّجُلُ يَعْمَلُ الْعَمَلَ فَيَحْمَدُهُ النَّاسُ عَلَيْهِ وَيُثْنُونَ عَلَيْهِ بِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ تِلْكَ عَاجِلُ بُشْرَى الْمُؤْمِنِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: O Messenger of Allah! A person performs a deed and people praise and commend him because of it. You (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is the glad tidings hastened for the believer.
