بَابُ مَا يَجُوزُ مِنَ الشَّعْرِ لِمَصْلَحَةِ شَرْعِيَّةٍ
Chapter on what poetry is permissible for a legitimate religious benefit
Hadith 9942
عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ اهْجُوا الْمُشْرِكِينَ بِالشِّعْرِ إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ يُجَاهِدُ بِنَفْسِهِ وَمَالِهِ وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ كَأَنَّمَا يَنْضَحُوهُمْ بِالنَّبْلِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Satirize the polytheists through poetry, indeed the believer strives with his self and his wealth. By Him in Whose hand is the life of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! It is as if these poets are throwing arrows at them.
Hadith 9943
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَدْ أَنْزَلَ فِي الشِّعْرِ مَا أَنْزَلَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ يُجَاهِدُ بِسَيْفِهِ وَلِسَانِهِ وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ لَكَأَنَّمَا تَرْمُونَهُمْ بِهِ نَضْحَ النَّبْلِ
(Second chain) They said to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Indeed, whatever Allah Almighty was to reveal about poetry, He has revealed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, a believer strives with his sword and his tongue. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! It is as if you are showering arrows upon them.
Hadith 9944
وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَالِثٍ أَنَّ كَعْبَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ حَيْنَ أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى فِي الشِّعْرِ مَا أَنْزَلَ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى قَدْ أَنْزَلَ فِي الشِّعْرِ مَا قَدْ عَلِمْتَ وَكَيْفَ تَرَى فِيهِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ يُجَاهِدُ بِسَيْفِهِ وَلِسَانِهِ
(Third chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Allah Almighty revealed (the verses of condemnation) regarding poetry, he came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: You know what Allah Almighty has revealed about poetry, so what is your opinion about them now? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, the believer strives in jihad with both his sword and his tongue.
Hadith 9945
عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّ مِنَ الشِّعْرِ حِكْمَةً
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, some poetry contains wisdom.
Hadith 9946
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ مِنَ الشِّعْرِ حُكْمًا وَمِنَ الْبَيَانِ سِحْرًا (وَفِي لَفْظٍ) وَإِنَّ مِنَ الْقَوْلِ سِحْرًا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, some poetry contains wisdom and insight, and some speech has an effect like magic.
Hadith 9947
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَا أُبَالِي مَا أَتَيْتُ وَمَا رَكِبْتُ إِذَا أَنَا شَرِبْتُ تِرْيَاقًا وَتَعَلَّقْتُ تَمِيمَةً أَوْ قُلْتُ الشِّعْرَ مِنْ قِبَلِ نَفْسِي
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: When I drink antidote, or hang an amulet, or compose poetry from myself, then I will not care about where I am going or what I am riding upon.
