Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The thing that prevents me from narrating the sayings of the Messenger of Allah is not that I am not among the companions who remember many ahadith; the real matter is that I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever attributes to me something which I did not say, then let him prepare his abode in the Fire.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both), that he said to Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him): What is the reason that I do not hear you narrating hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as Ibn Mas'ud and such-and-such people narrate? He replied: Beware! After accepting Islam, I was never separated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
