بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي التَّرْهِيبِ مِنْ كَثْرَةِ الْكَلَامِ وَمَا جَاءَ فِي الصَّمَتِ
Chapter on what has been narrated regarding warning against excessive speech and what has been narrated regarding silence
Hadith 9858
عَنْ تَمِيمِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ مَوْلَى بَنِي زَمْعَةَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ خَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اثْنَتَانِ مَنْ وَقَاهُ اللَّهُ شَرَّهُمَا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ قَالَ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَا تُخْبِرْنَا مَا هُمَا ثُمَّ قَالَ اثْنَتَانِ مَنْ وَقَاهُ اللَّهُ شَرَّهُمَا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَتِ الثَّالِثَةُ أَجْلَسَهُ أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالُوا تَرَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُرِيدُ يُبَشِّرُنَا فَتَمْنَعُهُ فَقَالَ إِنِّي أَخَافُ أَنْ يَتَّكِلَ النَّاسُ فَقَالَ اثْنَتَانِ مَنْ وَقَاهُ اللَّهُ شَرَّهُمَا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ مَا بَيْنَ لَحْيَيْهِ وَمَا بَيْنَ رِجْلَيْهِ
It is narrated from a Companion, who says: One day, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed us and then said: O people! There are two things; whoever Allah protects from their evil will enter Paradise. Upon hearing this, an Ansari man stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! Will you not tell us what those two things are? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again said: There are two things; whoever Allah protects from their evil will enter Paradise. Then the same man repeated the same thing. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this for the third time, the Companions made that man sit down and said to him: Do you not see that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wants to give us glad tidings, but you are stopping him? He said: I fear that people will rely on this and abandon further deeds. Finally, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There are two things; whoever Allah protects from their evil will enter Paradise: one is that which is between the two jaws, and the other is that which is between the two legs.
Hadith 9859
عَنْ أَبِي الصَّبْحَاءِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ جُبَيْرٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ لَا أَعْلَمُهُ إِلَّا رَفَعَهُ قَالَ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ ابْنُ آدَمَ فَإِنَّ أَعْضَاءَهُ تُكَفِّرُ اللِّسَانَ تَقُولُ اتَّقِ اللَّهَ فِينَا فَإِنَّكَ إِنِ اسْتَقَمْتَ اسْتَقَمْنَا وَإِنِ اعْوَجَجْتَ اعْوَجَجْنَا
Syedna Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When the son of Adam wakes up in the morning, all his limbs humble themselves before the tongue and say: Fear Allah regarding us, for if you are upright, we will also be upright, and if you become crooked, we will also become crooked.
Hadith 9860
عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حُسَيْنٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ حُسْنِ إِسْلَامِ الْمَرْءِ تَرْكُهُ مَا لَا يَعْنِيهِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The beauty of a servant’s Islam is that he leaves what does not concern him.
Hadith 9861
عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الثَّقَفِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ حَدِّثْنِي بِأَمْرٍ أَعْتَصِمُ بِهِ (وَفِي لَفْظٍ مُرْنِي فِي الْإِسْلَامِ بِأَمْرٍ لَا أَسْأَلُ عَنْهُ أَحَدًا بَعْدَكَ) قَالَ قُلْ رَبِّيَ اللَّهُ (وَفِي لَفْظٍ آمَنْتُ بِاللَّهِ) ثُمَّ اسْتَقِمْ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا أَخْوَفُ (وَفِي لَفْظٍ مَا أَكْبَرُ) مَا تَخَافُ عَلَيَّ (وَفِي لَفْظٍ فَأَيُّ شَيْءٍ أَتَّقِي) قَالَ فَأَخَذَ بِلِسَانِ نَفْسِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَذَا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sufyan bin Abdullah Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I said, "O Messenger of Allah! Tell me about such a deed related to Islam that I may hold fast to it and after you, I may not need to ask anyone about it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say, 'My Lord is Allah,' and then remain steadfast upon it." I said, "O Messenger of Allah! What do you fear most for me?" In another narration: "From what should I guard myself?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) held his blessed tongue and said: "This."
Hadith 9862
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ رَجُلًا قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَيُّ الْإِسْلَامِ أَفْضَلُ قَالَ مَنْ سَلِمَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ مِنْ لِسَانِهِ وَيَدِهِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man said: O Messenger of Allah! Which Islam is the best? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That person from whose tongue and hand other Muslims are safe.
Hadith 9863
عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَ أَعْرَابِيًّا بِخِصَالٍ مِنْ أَنْوَاعِ الْبِرِّ (فِيهَا) وَأْمُرْ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَانْهَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ فَإِنْ لَمْ تُطِقْ ذَلِكَ فَكُفَّ لِسَانَكَ إِلَّا مِنَ الْخَيْرِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Bara’ bin ‘Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed a Bedouin about various types of good deeds, among which were these: And you should enjoin good and forbid evil, but if you do not have the strength to do so, then restrain your tongue except for words of goodness.
Hadith 9864
عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَهُ أَلَا أُخْبِرُكَ بِرَأْسِ الْأَمْرِ وَعَمُودِهِ وَذِرْوَةِ سَنَامِهِ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ رَأْسُ الْأَمْرِ وَعَمُودُهُ الصَّلَاةُ وَذِرْوَةُ سَنَامِهِ الْجِهَادُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلَا أُخْبِرُكَ بِمِلَاكِ ذَلِكَ كُلِّهِ فَقُلْتُ بَلَى يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ فَأَخَذَ بِلِسَانِهِ فَقَالَ كُفَّ عَلَيْكَ هَذَا فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَإِنَّا لَمُؤَاخَذُونَ بِمَا نَتَكَلَّمُ بِهِ فَقَالَ ثَكِلَتْكَ أُمُّكَ يَا مُعَاذُ وَهَلْ يَكُبُّ النَّاسَ عَلَى وُجُوهِهِمْ فِي النَّارِ أَوْ قَالَ عَلَى مَنَاخِرِهِمْ إِلَّا حَصَائِدُ أَلْسِنَتِهِمْ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu’adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Shall I not tell you what is the foundation of the religion, its pillar, and its highest peak? I said: O Messenger of Allah! Certainly. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The foundation of the religion and its pillar is prayer, and its highest peak is jihad. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Shall I not also tell you about that thing which controls all of these? I said: Yes, O Prophet of Allah! In response, he (peace and blessings be upon him) held his blessed tongue and said: Restrain this over yourself. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Will we also be held accountable for what we say? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Mu’adh! May your mother lose you, nothing throws people on their faces into the Fire except the harvest of their tongues.
Hadith 9865
عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَا يُسْلِمُ عَبْدٌ حَتَّى يَسْلَمَ قَلْبُهُ وَلِسَانُهُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Him in Whose hand is my soul! A servant does not become a Muslim until his heart and tongue become ones of peace."
Hadith 9866
عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنْ تَوَكَّلَ لِي مَا بَيْنَ لَحْيَيْهِ وَمَا بَيْنَ رِجْلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ لَهُ بِالْجَنَّةِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Whoever guarantees for me what is between his jaws and what is between his legs, I will guarantee Paradise for him.
Hadith 9867
عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الطُّفَاوِيِّ قَالَ خَرَجَ أَبُو الْغَادِيَةِ وَحَبِيبُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ وَأُمُّ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ مُهَاجِرِينَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَسْلَمُوا فَقَالَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ أَوْصِنِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ إِيَّاكِ وَمَا يَسُوءُ الْأُذُنَ
Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Abdur Rahman Tufawi (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Sayyiduna Abu Ghadiyah, Sayyiduna Habib bin Harith, and Sayyidah Umm Abi Al-Aliyah migrated to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and accepted Islam. This woman said: O Messenger of Allah! Advise me with something. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Avoid that which is unpleasant to the ears.
Hadith 9868
عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ صُحَيْمٍ عَنْ أُمِّهِ ابْنَةِ أَبِي الْحَكَمِ الْغِفَّارِيِّ قَالَتْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيَدْنُو مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ حَتَّى مَا يَكُونَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهَا قِيدُ ذِرَاعٍ فَيَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْكَلِمَةِ فَيَتَبَاعَدُ مِنْهَا أَبْعَدَ مِنْ صَنْعَاءَ
It is narrated from Sayyida bint Abi Hakam Ghafari (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, a person keeps getting closer to Paradise, until there remains only a hand’s span between him and Paradise, but then he does such (a worst) deed that because of it, he becomes as far from Paradise as (the distance to) Sana’a.
Hadith 9869
عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ حَفِظَ مَا بَيْنَ فَقْمَيْهِ وَفَرْجِهِ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Whoever safeguards that which is between his jaws and his private parts, he will enter Paradise.
Hadith 9870
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ اللَّيْثِيُّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَلْقَمَةَ عَنْ بِلَالِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الْمُزَنِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْكَلِمَةِ مِنْ رِضْوَانِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ مَا يَظُنُّ أَنْ تَبْلُغَ مَا بَلَغَتْ يَكْتُبُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَهُ بِهَا رِضْوَانَهُ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ وَإِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْكَلِمَةِ مِنْ سَخَطِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ مَا يَظُنُّ أَنْ تَبْلُغَ مَا بَلَغَتْ يَكْتُبُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِهَا عَلَيْهِ سَخَطَهُ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ قَالَ فَكَانَ عَلْقَمَةُ يَقُولُ كَمْ مِنْ كَلَامٍ قَدْ مَنَعَنِيهِ حَدِيثُ بِلَالِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ
Narrated from Sayyiduna Bilal bin Harith Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, a person utters a word that is pleasing to Allah, while he himself does not even imagine that it will reach such a high rank, Allah writes His pleasure for that person because of it until the Day of Resurrection. And indeed, a person utters a word that is displeasing to Allah, while he himself does not even realize how far that word will reach, Allah writes His displeasure for that person because of it until the Day of Resurrection. Alqamah said: How many words are there from which this hadith of Sayyiduna Bilal bin Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) has prevented me.
