بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي التَّرْهِيْبِ مِنَ الشُّحُ وَالْبُخْلِ
Chapter on what has been narrated regarding warning against miserliness and stinginess
Hadith 9834
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ ((إِيَّاكُمْ وَالشُّحَّ فَإِنَّ الشُّحَّ أَهْلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ أَمَرَهُمْ بِالْقَطِيعَةِ فَقَطَعُوا وَأَمَرَهُمْ بِالْبُخْلِ فَبَخِلُوا وَأَمَرَهُمْ بِالْفُجُورِ فَفَجَرُوا))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Beware of greed, for indeed greed destroyed those before you. It commanded them to sever ties of kinship, so they severed them. It commanded them to be miserly, so they were miserly. And it incited them to commit evil deeds, so they committed evil deeds.
Hadith 9835
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((لَا يَجْتَمِعُ شُحٌّ وَإِيمَانٌ فِي قَلْبِ رَجُلٍ مُسْلِمٍ))
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Greed and faith cannot both be gathered in the heart of a Muslim man.
Hadith 9836
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ أَنَّهُ كَانَ مَعَ أَبِي ذَرٍّ فَخَرَجَ عَطَاؤُهُ وَمَعَهُ جَارِيَةٌ لَهُ فَجَعَلَتْ تَقْضِي حَوَائِجَهُ قَالَ فَفَضَلَ مَعَهَا سَبْعَةٌ قَالَ فَأَمَرَهَا أَنْ تَشْتَرِيَ بِهَا فُلُوسًا قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ لَوِ ادَّخَرْتَهُ لِلْحَاجَةِ تَنُوبُكَ أَوْ لِلضَّيْفِ يَنْزِلُ بِكَ قَالَ إِنَّ خَلِيلِي عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ أَنْ أَيُّمَا ذَهَبٍ أَوْ فِضَّةٍ أُوكِيَ عَلَيْهِ فَهُوَ جَمْرٌ عَلَى صَاحِبِهِ حَتَّى يُفْرِغَهُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ
It is narrated from Abdullah bin Samit that he was with Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), some wealth of his came out, and with him was a slave girl of his, who began to fulfill his needs. When seven (coins) were left from that wealth, he said to his slave girl to buy old coins in exchange for them. I (Abdullah bin Samit) said: If you store them for a need that may arise for you or for a guest who may come to you, it would be better. He said: My beloved (peace and blessings be upon him) advised me that any gold and silver that is stored away will be firebrands for its owner, until he spends it in the way of Allah Almighty.
Hadith 9837
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((مَثَلُ الْبَخِيلِ وَالْمُنْفِقِ كَمَثَلِ رَجُلَيْنِ عَلَيْهِمَا جُبَّتَانِ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ مِنْ لَدُنْ ثُدِيِّهِمَا إِلَى تَرَاقِيهِمَا فَأَمَّا الْمُنْفِقُ فَلَا يُنْفِقُ مِنْهَا إِلَّا اتَّسَعَتْ حَلْقَةٌ مَكَانَهَا فَهُوَ يُوَسِّعُهَا عَلَيْهِ وَأَمَّا الْبَخِيلُ فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَزْدَادُ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا اسْتِحْكَامًا))
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The example of the miser and the spender is like two men who are wearing armor from their chest up to their collarbone. Whenever the spender spends, the rings of his armor open up at their place until it becomes completely open. As for the miser, the tightness of his armor only increases.
Hadith 9838
عَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ لِفُلَانٍ فِي حَائِطِي عَذْقًا وَأَنَّهُ قَدْ آذَانِي وَشَقَّ عَلَيَّ مَكَانُ عَذْقِهِ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ ((بِعْنِي عَذْقَكَ الَّذِي فِي حَائِطِ فُلَانٍ)) قَالَ لَا قَالَ ((فَهَبْهُ لِي)) قَالَ لَا قَالَ ((فَبِعْنِيهِ بِعَذْقٍ فِي الْجَنَّةِ)) قَالَ لَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((مَا رَأَيْتُ الَّذِي هُوَ أَبْخَلُ مِنْكَ إِلَّا الَّذِي يَبْخَلُ بِالسَّلَامِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: In my garden, there is a date palm tree belonging to such-and-such person, and indeed, he has caused me distress, and the place of his tree has become a source of hardship for me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a message to that person, asking him to sell his date palm tree, which is in the other man's garden, to him. But he said: No. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then gift it to me. He said: No. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then sell it to me in exchange for a date palm tree in Paradise. He said: No. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I have not seen anyone more miserly than you, except the one who is miserly in greeting (saying Salam).
Hadith 9839
عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبَّادَ بْنَ شُرَحْبِيلَ وَكَانَ مِنَّا مِنْ بَنِي غُبَرَ قَالَ أَصَابَتْنَا سَنَةٌ فَأَتَيْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ فَدَخَلْتُ حَائِطًا مِنْ حِيطَانِهَا فَأَخَذْتُ سُنْبُلًا فَفَرَكْتُهُ وَأَكَلْتُ مِنْهُ وَحَمَلْتُ فِي ثَوْبِي فَجَاءَ صَاحِبُ الْحَائِطِ فَضَرَبَنِي وَأَخَذَ ثَوْبِي فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ ((مَا عَلَّمْتَهُ إِذْ كَانَ جَاهِلًا وَلَا أَطْعَمْتَهُ إِذْ كَانَ سَاغِبًا أَوْ جَائِعًا)) فَرَدَّ عَلَيَّ الثَّوْبَ وَأَمَرَ لِي بِنِصْفِ وَسْقٍ أَوْ وَسْقٍ
Narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Abad bin Sharhabil (may Allah be pleased with him), who was from Banu Ghubar, he says: We were afflicted by famine, so I came to Madinah and entered one of its gardens. I found an ear of corn and took out some grains from it. I ate some grains and gathered some in my garment. Meanwhile, the owner of the garden arrived, he beat me and snatched my garment. I came (with my complaint) to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him the whole matter. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to the owner of the garden): He was ignorant, you did not teach him, and he was hungry, you did not feed him. So he returned my garment to me and also gave me one or half a wasq of food.
Hadith 9840
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ ((يَقُولُ الْعَبْدُ مَالِي مَالِي وَإِنَّ مَالَهُ مِنْ مَالِهِ ثَلَاثٌ مَا أَكَلَ فَأَفْنَى أَوْ لَبِسَ فَأَبْلَى أَوْ أَعْطَى فَأَقْنَى مَا سِوَى ذَلِكَ فَهُوَ ذَاهِبٌ وَتَارِكُهُ لِلنَّاسِ))
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A servant says: My wealth, my wealth, while from his wealth there are only three parts for him: (1) that which he has eaten and consumed, (2) that which he has worn and worn out, and (3) that which he has given to someone and pleased him. Whatever is besides this, he is going to leave it behind for the people.
