Hadith 9706
It is narrated from ‘Ubada bin Nusi, who says that Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep. Someone asked him: Why are you weeping? He said: I remembered a hadith that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) narrate, and that made me weep. I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: I fear for my ummah regarding shirk and hidden desires. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Will your ummah commit shirk after you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, beware! They will not worship the sun, the moon, stones, or idols, but they will show off through their deeds, and the hidden desire is that a servant fasts in the morning, then some desire overcomes him and he breaks his fast.
Hadith 9707
It is narrated from the Companion of the Messenger, Sayyiduna Abi Saeed bin Abu Fadalah Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When Allah Almighty gathers the first and the last on that Day, in which there is no doubt, a caller will announce: Whoever among the servants performed deeds for Allah Almighty, but also associated someone else in them, then let him seek his reward from that other than Allah, for Allah Almighty says: I am the most independent of partners from shirk (association).
Hadith 9708
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty says: I am the best of partners among partners. Whoever performs a deed for Me and then associates someone else with Me in it, I am free from him, and he is for the one whom he associates.

Ibn Ghanm says: When I and Sayyiduna Abu Darda entered the mosque of Jabiyah, we met Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him). He took my right hand with his left hand and Sayyiduna Abu Darda’s left hand with his right hand and began to walk between us. We began to whisper, and Allah knows best what we were whispering about. Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If one or both of you live long, it is possible that you will see a man belonging to the middle class of Muslims, who will recite the Holy Qur’an according to the tongue of Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he will recite it repeatedly and display it, and he will consider its lawful as lawful and its unlawful as unlawful, and he will adhere to its commands, but still he will bring to you as much good as the head of a dead donkey brings (i.e., that man will not bring even the slightest good or virtue). While we were in this state, Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aws and Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with them both) came and sat with us. Sayyiduna Shaddad (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O people! What I fear most for you is what I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is hidden desire and shirk (associating partners with Allah). Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit and Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: O Allah, forgive! Did not the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that Satan has despaired of being worshipped in the Arabian Peninsula? As for hidden desire, we know that it is the desires of the world, related to women and their desires, but Shaddad! What is this shirk about which you are warning us? Sayyiduna Shaddad (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Well, tell me about this: if a man prays for the sake of another man, or fasts, or gives charity, do you not think that he has committed shirk? They said: Yes, by Allah! Whoever prays to show someone, or fasts, or gives charity, he has committed shirk. Sayyiduna Shaddad (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever prays showing off, he has committed shirk; whoever fasts showing off, he has committed shirk; whoever gives charity showing off, he has committed shirk. Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Will it not be that those deeds which he did purely for Allah will be considered and accepted, and the deeds of shirk will be left aside? Sayyiduna Shaddad (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever associates anyone with Me, I am the best of partners and associates; whoever associates anything with Me, all his accumulated deeds, whether little or much, will be for the one with whom he associated, and I (Allah) am free from him.
Hadith 9710
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever desires to become famous, Allah Almighty will make him famous, and whoever desires to display (false) righteousness, Allah Almighty will make it apparent.
Hadith 9711
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hind Dari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever stands at the place of showing off and seeking fame, Allah Almighty will expose him on the Day of Resurrection and will make him well-known.
Hadith 9712

Abdullah bin Auf Kanani, who was the governor of Ramla on behalf of Umar bin Abdul Aziz, narrates: He says, I was present with Abdul Malik bin Marwan, and on the day when Amr bin Saeed bin Aas was killed, he said to Basheer bin Aqra’bah Juhani: O Abu al-Yaman! Today I am in need of your speech, so stand up and say something. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: Whoever stands up to address people, and his only intention is showing off and seeking fame, Allah Almighty will make him stand in the place of showing off and fame.
Hadith 9713
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Whoever seeks to become famous among people through his deeds, Allah Almighty will make him famous before the creation, but then He will make him lowly and contemptible. Then the eyes of Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) filled with tears.

Sulaiman bin Yasar says: When the people dispersed from around Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), a man from the people of Syria named Natil said: Respected one! Narrate to us a hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: On the Day of Resurrection, the first (three types of) people whose case will be decided are: (1) The man who was martyred, he will be brought, Allah Almighty will make him recognize His blessings, and he will acknowledge them. Then Allah Almighty will ask: What deed did you bring? He will say: I fought in Your way until I was martyred. Allah Almighty will say: You are lying, you fought so that you would be called brave, and so it has already been said (in the world). Then it will be ordered regarding him, and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell. (2) The man who learned and taught knowledge and recited the Qur’an, he will be brought, Allah Almighty will make him recognize His blessings, and he will acknowledge them. Allah Almighty will say: What deed did you bring? He will say: I learned and taught knowledge for Your sake and recited the Qur’an for You. Allah Almighty will say: You are lying, your purpose in acquiring knowledge was so that you would be called a scholar, and you recited the Qur’an so that you would be called a reciter, and so it has already been said. Then it will be ordered regarding him, and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell. (3) The man whom Allah Almighty made prosperous and wealthy and granted all kinds of wealth, he will be brought. Allah Almighty will make him recognize His blessings, and he will acknowledge them. Then Allah Almighty will say: What deed did you bring? He will say: I spent in all those ways that You liked to be spent in, I spent for Your sake in all those ways. Allah Almighty will say: You are lying, your purpose in spending was so that you would be called generous, and that has already been said. Then it will be ordered regarding him, according to which he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell.
Hadith 9715
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: We used to take turns to go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and would spend the night with him. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) needed something or if any matter arose during the night, he would wake us up. In this way, the number of those coming for reward and those on duty would increase. One night, we were conversing when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us and said: Is this whispering going on? Did I not forbid you from whispering? We said: O Messenger of Allah! We are turning to Allah Almighty and, fearing the Dajjal, we are talking about him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Shall I not inform you of something which, in my view, is more fearful than the Messiah Dajjal? We said: Yes, indeed. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Hidden shirk, that is, performing deeds for the sake of someone’s status.
Hadith 9716

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Adra’ (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I was guarding the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) one night. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out for some need. When he saw me, he took my hand, so we set out and passed by a man who was reciting the Qur’an aloud in prayer. Upon seeing him, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “It is near that this one becomes a show-off.” I said: “O Messenger of Allah! He is reciting the Qur’an in a loud voice (what harm is there in that)?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) let go of my hand and said: “You cannot attain this religion with dominance.” He says: Then, on another night, it happened that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out for some need, while I was guarding (as before). (Similarly) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took my hand (and we set out) and passed by a man who was reciting the Qur’an aloud in prayer. This time, I said: “It is near that this person becomes a show-off.” But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (rejecting my statement) said: “Never, he is indeed one who repents much.” When I looked, it was Sayyiduna Abdullah Dhu al-Bijadayn.
