بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي النِّسَاءِ وَمَا يُدْخِلُهُنَّ الْجَنَّةَ
Chapter on what has been narrated regarding women and what admits them to Paradise
Hadith 9640
عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا صَلَّتِ الْمَرْأَةُ خَمْسَهَا وَصَامَتْ شَهْرَهَا وَحَفِظَتْ فَرْجَهَا وَأَطَاعَتْ زَوْجَهَا قِيلَ لَهَا ادْخُلِي الْجَنَّةَ مِنْ أَيِّ أَبْوَابِ الْجَنَّةِ شِئْتِ
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When a woman offers her five prayers, fasts in the month of Ramadan, guards her chastity, and obeys her husband, it will be said to her: Enter Paradise from whichever gate you wish.
Hadith 9641
عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ امْرَأَةً أَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَسْأَلُهُ وَمَعَهَا صَبِيَّانِ لَهَا فَأَعْطَاهَا ثَلَاثَ تَمَرَاتٍ فَأَعْطَتْ كُلَّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهَا تَمْرَةً قَالَ ثُمَّ إِنَّ أَحَدَ الصَّبِيَّيْنِ بَكَى قَالَ فَشَقَّتْهَا فَأَعْطَتْ كُلَّ وَاحِدٍ نِصْفًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَامِلَاتٌ وَالِدَاتٌ رَحِيمَاتٌ بِأَوْلَادِهِنَّ لَوْلَا مَا يَصْنَعْنَ بِأَزْوَاجِهِنَّ لَدَخَلَ مُصَلِّيَاتُهُنَّ الْجَنَّةَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a woman came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him (for something), while she had two children with her. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave her three dates. She gave one date each to both children. Then, when one child started crying, she divided the third date into two pieces and gave half to each. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The one who carries children in her womb, then gives birth to them, and then shows compassion to them—these women, whatever they do with their husbands, if it were not for this, the women who pray would have entered Paradise.
Hadith 9642
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَ أَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ امْرَأَةٌ وَمَعَهَا صَبِيٌّ لَهَا تَحْمِلُهُ وَبِيَدِهَا آخَرُ لَا أَعْلَمُهُ إِلَّا قَالَ وَهِيَ حَامِلٌ فَلَمْ تَسْأَلْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَيْئًا يَوْمَئِذٍ إِلَّا أَعْطَاهَا إِيَّاهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ حَامِلَاتٌ وَالِدَاتٌ الْحَدِيثَ
(Second chain) A woman came to the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, carrying a child and holding another child in her other hand. I think the narrator also said that the woman was pregnant as well. Whatever she asked from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, he gave it to her. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Those who carry children in their wombs, then give birth to them, … .
Hadith 9643
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ انْصَرَفَ مِنَ الصُّبْحِ يَوْمًا فَأَتَى النِّسَاءَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَوَقَفَ عَلَيْهِنَّ فَقَالَ يَا مَعْشَرَ النِّسَاءِ مَا رَأَيْتُ مِنْ نَوَاقِصِ عُقُولٍ وَدِينٍ أَذْهَبَ لِقُلُوبِ ذَوِي الْأَلْبَابِ مِنْكُنَّ فَإِنِّي قَدْ رَأَيْتُكُنَّ أَكْثَرَ أَهْلِ النَّارِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَتَقَرَّبْنَ إِلَى اللَّهِ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُنَّ وَكَانَ فِي النِّسَاءِ امْرَأَةُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ فَأَخْبَرَتْهُ بِمَا سَمِعَتْ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَخَذَتْ حُلِيًّا لَهَا فَقَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبِينَ بِهَذَا الْحُلِيِّ فَقَالَتْ أَتَقَرَّبُ بِهِ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَرَسُولِهِ لَعَلَّ اللَّهَ أَنْ لَا يَجْعَلَنِي مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ فَقَالَ وَيْلَكِ هَلُمِّي فَتَصَدَّقِي بِهِ عَلَيَّ وَعَلَى وَلَدِي فَإِنَّا لَهُ مَوْضِعٌ فَقَالَتْ وَاللَّهِ حَتَّى أَذْهَبَ بِهِ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَهَبَتْ تَسْتَأْذِنُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالُوا لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ هَذِهِ زَيْنَبُ تَسْتَأْذِنُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ أَيُّ الزَّيَانِبِ هِيَ فَقَالُوا امْرَأَةُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ فَقَالَ ائْذَنُوا لَهَا فَدَخَلَتْ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ مِنْكَ مَقَالَةً فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَى ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ فَحَدَّثْتُهُ وَأَخَذْتُ حُلِيًّا أَتَقَرَّبُ بِهِ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَإِلَيْكَ رَجَاءَ أَنْ لَا يَجْعَلَنِيَ اللَّهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ فَقَالَ لِي ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ تَصَدَّقِي بِهِ عَلَيَّ وَعَلَى وَلَدِي فَإِنَّا لَهُ مَوْضِعٌ فَقُلْتُ حَتَّى أَسْتَأْذِنَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَصَدَّقِي بِهِ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى بَنِيهِ فَإِنَّهُمْ لَهُ مَوْضِعٌ ثُمَّ قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَرَأَيْتَ مَا سَمِعْتُ مِنْكَ حِينَ وَقَفْتَ عَلَيْنَا مَا رَأَيْتُ مِنْ نَوَاقِصِ عُقُولٍ قَطُّ وَلَا دِينٍ أَذْهَبَ بِقُلُوبِ ذَوِي الْأَلْبَابِ مِنْكُنَّ قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَمَا نُقْصَانُ دِينِنَا وَعُقُولِنَا فَقَالَ أَمَّا مَا ذَكَرْتُ مِنْ نُقْصَانِ دِينِكُنَّ فَالْحَيْضَةُ الَّتِي تُصِيبُكُنَّ تَمْكُثُ إِحْدَاكُنَّ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ أَنْ تَمْكُثَ لَا تُصَلِّي وَلَا تَصُومُ فَذَلِكَ مِنْ نُقْصَانِ دِينِكُنَّ وَأَمَّا مَا ذَكَرْتُ مِنْ نُقْصَانِ عُقُولِكُنَّ فَشَهَادَتُكُنَّ إِنَّمَا شَهَادَةُ الْمَرْأَةِ نِصْفُ شَهَادَةٍ
Narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the Fajr prayer, came to the women present in the mosque, stood by them and said: O assembly of women! Despite being deficient in intelligence and religion, I have not seen anyone more able to overcome a wise man than you women, and I have seen that on the Day of Resurrection, the majority in Hell will be women, therefore, seek nearness to Allah Almighty as much as you can. Among the women was also the wife of Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), she informed her husband of what she had heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and set out with her jewelry. Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Where are you going with this jewelry? She said: Through this, I want to seek nearness to Allah Almighty and His Messenger, perhaps Allah Almighty will not make me among the people of Hell. He said: You will be ruined, come here and give charity to me and my children, we are the best recipients of it. She said: By Allah! Not until I go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So she went and sought permission from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The people informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that Zainab had come and was seeking permission to come to you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Which Zainab is it? The people said: The wife of Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Give her permission. So she went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, I heard something from you, then I went to my husband, Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated this hadith to him, and set out with my jewelry with the intention that through it I may seek nearness to Allah Almighty and His Messenger, hoping that Allah Almighty will not make me among the people of Hell. But Ibn Mas’ud told me: Give charity to me and my children, we are more deserving of it. I said: First, let me seek permission from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Give charity to him and his children, they are the most deserving of it. Then the woman said: O Messenger of Allah! When you came to us in the morning, you said that despite being deficient in intelligence and religion, I have not seen anyone more able to overcome a wise man than you women, and I have seen that on the Day of Resurrection, the majority in Hell will be women. O Messenger of Allah! My request is, what is the deficiency in our religion and intelligence? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The deficiency in religion I mentioned is that when any of you menstruates, she refrains from praying and fasting according to the will of Allah Almighty, and this causes a deficiency in religion. As for the deficiency in intelligence, it is the matter of your testimony, that the testimony of one woman is considered equal to half the testimony of a man.
Hadith 9644
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ يَا مَعْشَرَ النِّسَاءِ تَصَدَّقْنَ وَأَكْثِرْنَ فَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُكُنَّ أَكْثَرَ أَهْلِ النَّارِ لِكَثْرَةِ اللَّعْنِ وَكُفْرِ الْعَشِيرِ مَا رَأَيْتُ مِنْ نَاقِصَاتِ عَقْلٍ وَدِينٍ أَغْلَبَ لِذِي لَبٍّ مِنْكُنَّ قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَمَا نُقْصَانُ الْعَقْلِ وَالدِّينِ قَالَ أَمَّا نُقْصَانُ الْعَقْلِ وَالدِّينِ فَشَهَادَةُ امْرَأَتَيْنِ تَعْدِلُ شَهَادَةَ رَجُلٍ فَهَذَا نُقْصَانُ الْعَقْلِ وَتَمْكُثُ اللَّيَالِيَ لَا تُصَلِّي وَتُفْطِرُ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَهَذَا نُقْصَانُ الدِّينِ
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O assembly of women! Give charity and do so abundantly, for I see that the majority of the inhabitants of Hell are you. The reason for this is that you indulge much in cursing and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion who can overcome a wise man than you women. A woman asked: What is the deficiency in our intelligence and religion? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The deficiency in intelligence is that the testimony of two women is equal to the testimony of one man; this is the deficiency in intelligence. And a woman does not pray during her menstrual days nor does she fast in Ramadan; this is the deficiency in religion.
Hadith 9645
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَقُولُ يَا نِسَاءَ الْمُسْلِمَاتِ لَا تَحْقِرَنَّ جَارَةٌ لِجَارَتِهَا وَلَوْ فِرْسِنَ شَاةٍ
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Muslim women! Let not any neighbor consider anything insignificant for her neighbor, even if it is only the hoof of a goat.
Hadith 9646
عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُعَاذٍ الْأَشْهَلِيِّ عَنْ جَدَّتِهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلُهُ إِلَّا أَنَّ فِيهِ وَلَوْ كُرَاعَ شَاةٍ مُحْرَقٌ
Amr bin Mu'adh Ashhali narrates a similar hadith of the Prophet from his grandmother, except that in it is: Even if it is the burnt thin shank of a goat.
Hadith 9647
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا خَيْرَ فِي جَمَاعَةِ النِّسَاءِ إِلَّا فِي مَسْجِدٍ أَوْ فِي جَنَازَةِ قَتِيلٍ
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There is no good in the congregation of women, except in the mosque or at the funeral of a martyr.
Hadith 9648
وَعَنْهَا أَيْضًا قَالَتْ اسْتَأْذَنَّا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْجِهَادِ فَقَالَ جِهَادُكُنَّ أَوْ حَسْبُكُنَّ الْحَجُّ
It is also narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: We asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to go for jihad. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Your jihad is Hajj or Hajj is sufficient for you.
Hadith 9649
(وَعَنْهَا مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ عَلَيْكُنَّ بِالْبَيْتِ فَإِنَّهُ جِهَادُكُنَّ
(Second chain) The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Hold fast to the House of Allah; this is your jihad.
Hadith 9650
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ أَنَا أَيُّوبُ عَنْ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ سِيرِينَ قَالَتْ كُنَّا نَمْنَعُ عَوَاتِقَنَا أَنْ يَخْرُجْنَ فَقَدِمَتِ امْرَأَةٌ فَنَزَلَتْ قَصْرَ بَنِي خَلَفٍ فَحَدَّثَتْ أَنَّ أُخْتَهَا كَانَتْ تَحْتَ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَدْ غَزَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ اثْنَتَيْ عَشْرَةَ غَزْوَةً قَالَتْ أُخْتِي غَزَوْتُ مَعَهُ سِتَّ غَزَوَاتٍ قَالَتْ كُنَّا نُدَاوِي الْكَلْمَى وَنَقُومُ عَلَى الْمَرْضَى فَسَأَلَتْ أُخْتِي رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ هَلْ عَلَى إِحْدَانَا بَأْسٌ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهَا جِلْبَابٌ أَنْ لَا تَخْرُجَ فَقَالَ لِتُلْبِسْهَا صَاحِبَتُهَا مِنْ جِلْبَابِهَا وَلْتَشْهَدِ الْخَيْرَ وَدَعْوَةَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا قَدِمَتْ أُمُّ عَطِيَّةَ فَسَأَلْتُهَا أَوْ سَأَلْنَاهَا هَلْ سَمِعْتِ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ كَذَا وَكَذَا قَالَتْ وَكَانَتْ لَا تَذْكُرُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَبَدًا إِلَّا قَالَتْ بِيَبَا فَقَالَتْ نَعَمْ بِيَبَا قَالَ لِتَخْرُجِ الْعَوَاتِقُ ذَوَاتُ الْخُدُورِ أَوْ قَالَتْ الْعَوَاتِقُ وَذَوَاتُ الْخُدُورِ وَالْحُيَّضُ فَيَشْهَدْنَ الْخَيْرَ وَدَعْوَةَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَيَعْتَزِلْنَ الْحُيَّضُ الْمُصَلَّى فَقُلْتُ لِأُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ الْحَائِضُ فَقَالَتْ أَوَ لَيْسَ يَشْهَدْنَ عَرَفَةَ وَتَشْهَدُ كَذَا وَتَشْهَدُ كَذَا
Hafsa bint Sirin says: We used to prevent our young women from going out. A woman came, stayed at the palace of Banu Khalaf, and narrated that her sister was the wife of a companion, and that companion had participated in twelve battles with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. My sister said: I also participated in six battles with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. We used to treat the wounded and take care of the sick. My sister asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: Is there any harm if a woman who does not have a shawl does not go out for Eid? The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Her friend should give her a shawl, and she should participate in goodness and the supplications of the Muslims. Then, when Sayyida Umm Atiyyah, may Allah be pleased with her, came, we asked her whether she had heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say such and such. She said: Yes. Whenever she mentioned the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, she would say "Biban." Therefore, she said: "Biban." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Young women and those in seclusion, even menstruating women, should go out and participate in goodness and the supplications of the Muslims, but menstruating women should stay away from the prayer place. I said to Sayyida Umm Atiyyah: Even menstruating women? She said: Does not a menstruating woman go to Arafah and such and such places during Hajj?
