Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Avoid sitting on the roads. The companions said: O Messenger of Allah! There is no alternative for our gatherings; we have to talk on the roads. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you insist, then give the road its due right. They asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is the right of the road? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Lowering the gaze, not causing harm, responding to greetings, enjoining good, and forbidding evil.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Bara’ bin ‘Azib (may Allah be pleased with both of them) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a gathering of the Ansar and said: If you must sit in the pathways, then guide the traveler, respond to greetings, and help the oppressed.
Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh bin Amr Khuzai (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Avoid sitting on the roads. If someone wishes to sit on the road, then he should fulfill its right. We said: O Messenger of Allah! What is the right of the road? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Lowering the gaze, responding to greetings, enjoining good, and forbidding evil.
