بَابُ التَّرْغِيْبِ فِي عِبَادَةِ الْمَرِيضِ مُطْلَقًا وَثَوَابِ ذلك
Chapter on encouragement to worship with the sick in general and its reward
Hadith 9469
عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى قَالَ جَاءَ أَبُو مُوسَى إِلَى الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا يَعُودُهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَلِيٌّ أَعَائِدًا جِئْتَ أَمْ شَامِتًا قَالَ لَا بَلْ عَائِدًا قَالَ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَلِيٌّ إِنْ كُنْتَ جِئْتَ عَائِدًا فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِذَا عَادَ الرَّجُلُ أَخَاهُ الْمُسْلِمَ مَشَى فِي خِرَافَةِ الْجَنَّةِ حَتَّى يَجْلِسَ فَإِذَا جَلَسَ غَمَرَتْهُ الرَّحْمَةُ فَإِنْ كَانَ غُدْوَةً صَلَّى عَلَيْهِ سَبْعُونَ أَلْفَ مَلَكٍ حَتَّى يُمْسِيَ وَإِنْ كَانَ مَسَاءً صَلَّى عَلَيْهِ سَبْعُونَ أَلْفَ مَلَكٍ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ
Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila says: Abu Musa came to visit Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) during his illness. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: Have you come to visit the sick or to rejoice over the calamity? He replied: To visit the sick. Upon hearing this, Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If you have truly come to visit the sick, then listen, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When a servant goes to visit his Muslim brother who is ill, he walks among the chosen fruits of Paradise, and when he sits (by the patient), mercy covers him. If it is morning, then until evening, and if it is evening, then until morning, seventy thousand angels pray for mercy upon him.
Hadith 9470
(وَمِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ قَالَ عَادَ أَبُو مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيُّ الْحَسَنَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا فَقَالَ لَهُ عَلِيٌّ أَعَائِدًا جِئْتَ أَمْ زَائِرًا فَقَالَ أَبُو مُوسَى بَلْ جِئْتُ عَائِدًا فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَنْ عَادَ مَرِيضًا بَكَرًا شَيَّعَهُ سَبْعُونَ أَلْفَ مَلَكٍ كُلُّهُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُ لَهُ حَتَّى يُمْسِيَ وَكَانَ لَهُ خَرِيفٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ وَإِنْ عَادَهُ مَسَاءً شَيَّعَهُ سَبْعُونَ أَلْفَ مَلَكٍ كُلُّهُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُ لَهُ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ وَكَانَ لَهُ خَرِيفٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ
(Second chain) Abdullah bin Nafi’ says: Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) came to visit Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to inquire about his health. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Have you come to visit as a visitor or to inquire about his health? Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I have come to inquire about his health. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever visits a sick person in the morning, seventy thousand angels accompany him to his house to see him off, and all these angels seek forgiveness for him until the evening, and a garden is made for him in Paradise. And if he visits in the evening, then likewise seventy thousand angels accompany him to see him off, and they pray for his forgiveness until the morning, and a garden is made for him in Paradise.
Hadith 9471
عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ ((مَا مِنْ مُسْلِمٍ عَادَ أَخَاهُ إِلَّا ابْتَعَثَ اللَّهُ لَهُ سَبْعِينَ أَلْفَ مَلَكٍ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَيِّ سَاعَاتِ النَّهَارِ كَانَ حَتَّى يُمْسِيَ وَمِنْ أَيِّ سَاعَاتِ اللَّيْلِ كَانَ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he says that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever among the Muslims visits his sick brother, Allah Almighty will send seventy thousand angels for him, who will pray for mercy for him. If he does this at any hour of the day, this supplication continues until evening, and if he visits at night, this supplication continues until morning.
Hadith 9472
عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ ((مَنْ عَادَ مَرِيضًا مَشَى فِي خِرَافِ الْجَنَّةِ فَإِذَا جَلَسَ عِنْدَهُ اسْتَنْقَعَ فِي الرَّحْمَةِ فَإِذَا خَرَجَ مِنْ عِنْدِهِ وُكِّلَ بِهِ سَبْعُونَ أَلْفَ مَلَكٍ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ لَهُ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever visits a sick person walks among the chosen fruits of Paradise, and when he sits with him, he remains in mercy, and when he leaves from him, seventy thousand angels are appointed with him, who pray for his forgiveness that day.
Hadith 9473
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ ((مَرِضْتُ فَلَمْ يَعُدْنِي ابْنُ آدَمَ وَظَمِئْتُ فَلَمْ يَسْقِنِي ابْنُ آدَمَ فَقُلْتُ أَتَمْرَضُ يَا رَبِّ قَالَ يَمْرَضُ الْعَبْدُ مِنْ عِبَادِي مِمَّنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ فَلَا يُعَادُ فَلَوْ عَادَهُ كَانَ مَا يَعُودُهُ لِي وَيَظْمَأُ فِي الْأَرْضِ فَلَا يُسْقَى فَلَوْ سُقِيَ كَانَ مَا سَقَاهُ لِي))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty said: I became ill, but the son of Adam did not visit Me, and I became thirsty, but the son of Adam did not give Me water to drink. I said: O my Lord! Do You also become ill? Allah Almighty said: One of My servants among the people of the earth became ill, but he was not cared for; if the son of Adam had visited him, it would have been for Me. Similarly, a man became thirsty, but he was not given water to drink; if he had been given water, that act would have been for Me.
Hadith 9474
عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ أَبِي دَاوُدَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَ أَتَيْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا حَمْزَةَ إِنَّ الْمَكَانَ بَعِيدٌ وَنَحْنُ يُعْجِبُنَا أَنْ نَعُودَكَ فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ ((أَيُّمَا رَجُلٍ يَعُودُ مَرِيضًا فَإِنَّمَا يَخُوضُ فِي الرَّحْمَةِ فَإِذَا قَعَدَ عِنْدَ الْمَرِيضِ غَمَرَتْهُ الرَّحْمَةُ)) قَالَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَذَا لِلصَّحِيحِ الَّذِي يَعُودُ الْمَرِيضَ فَالْمَرِيضُ مَا لَهُ قَالَ ((تُحَطُّ عَنْهُ ذُنُوبُهُ))
Abu Dawood says: I went to Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: O Abu Hamzah! The house is far, but we really like to visit you for your well-being. He raised his head and said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever goes to visit a sick person enters into mercy, and when he sits with the patient, mercy envelops him. I said: O Messenger of Allah! This reward is for the healthy visitor; what is the reward for the sick person? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: His sins are forgiven.
Hadith 9475
عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((مَنْ عَادَ مَرِيضًا خَاضَ فِي الرَّحْمَةِ فَإِذَا جَلَسَ عِنْدَهُ اسْتَنْقَعَ فِيهَا وَقَدِ اسْتَنْقَعْتُمْ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ فِي الرَّحْمَةِ))
Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever visits a sick person enters into mercy, and whoever sits with him is immersed in mercy, and indeed, you, if Allah wills, have settled in mercy.
Hadith 9476
عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ ((عُودُوا الْمَرِيضَ وَامْشُوا فِي الْجَنَائِزِ تُذَكِّرْكُمْ الْآخِرَةَ))
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Visit the sick and accompany the funerals, for these remind one of the Hereafter.
Hadith 9477
عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((عَائِدُ الْمَرِيضِ يَخُوضُ فِي الرَّحْمَةِ وَوَضَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَدَهُ عَلَى وَرِكِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَكَذَا مُقْبِلًا وَمُدْبِرًا وَإِذَا جَلَسَ عِنْدَهُ غَمَرَتْهُ الرَّحْمَةُ))
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The one who visits a sick person enters into mercy. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on his buttocks and said: Both when coming and when going. Then, when he sits by him, mercy covers him.
