بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي فَضْلِ الْفُقَرَاءِ الْمَسَاكِينِ والتَّرْغِيْبِ فِي حُبِّهِمْ وَمُجَالَسَتِهِمْ
Chapter on what has been narrated regarding the virtue of the poor and needy, and encouragement to love and sit with them
Hadith 9318
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ زَيْدٍ أَبِي الْحَوَارِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي الصِّدِّيقِ عَنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ ((يَدْخُلُ فُقَرَاءُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الْجَنَّةَ قَبْلَ أَغْنِيَائِهِمْ بِأَرْبَعِمِائَةِ عَامٍ)) قَالَ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّ الْحَسَنَ يَذْكُرُ أَرْبَعِينَ عَامًا فَقَالَ عَنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((أَرْبَعُمِائَةِ عَامٍ)) قَالَ حَتَّى يَقُولَ الْغَنِيُّ يَا لَيْتَنِي كُنْتُ عَيِّلًا قَالَ قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ سَمِّهِمْ لَنَا بِأَسْمَائِهِمْ قَالَ ((هُمُ الَّذِينَ إِذَا كَانَ مَكْرُوهٌ بُعِثُوا لَهُ وَإِذَا كَانَ مَغْنَمٌ بُعِثَ إِلَيْهِ سِوَاهُمْ وَهُمُ الَّذِينَ يُحْجَبُونَ عَنِ الْأَبْوَابِ))
Some of the noble Companions narrate that the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The poor believer will enter Paradise four hundred years before the wealthy Muslims. I said: Hasan mentions forty years? But they narrated on the authority of the Companions of the Messenger that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, spoke of four hundred years, to the extent that the wealthy person will say: Would that I had been very needy as well. We said: O Messenger of Allah! Please describe the qualities of these poor ones. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: These are the people who, when the time for battle comes, are sent forth, but when it is time for the spoils, others are sent, and these are the people who are turned away from the doors (of the nobles).
Hadith 9319
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((يَدْخُلُ فُقَرَاءُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ الْجَنَّةَ قَبْلَ أَغْنِيَائِهِمْ بِنِصْفِ يَوْمٍ وَهُوَ خَمْسُمِائَةِ عَامٍ))
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Poor Muslims will enter Paradise half a day, that is, five hundred years, before wealthy Muslims.
Hadith 9320
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ ((أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِأَهْلِ النَّارِ وَأَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ أَمَّا أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ فَكُلُّ ضَعِيفٍ مُتَضَعَّفٍ أَشْعَثَ ذِي طِمْرَيْنِ لَوْ أَقْسَمَ عَلَى اللَّهِ لَأَبَرَّهُ وَأَمَّا أَهْلُ النَّارِ فَكُلُّ جَعْظَرِيٍّ جَوَّاظٍ جَمَّاعٍ مَنَّاعٍ ذِي تَبَعٍ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Shall I not tell you about the people of Hell and the people of Paradise? The people of Paradise are: every weak person, who is considered weak, disheveled-haired, and wearing two worn-out old garments, (but in the sight of Allah Almighty, he is so esteemed that) if he swears by Allah Almighty, He fulfills his oath. And the people of Hell are: every ill-tempered (and ill-natured) person, one who walks arrogantly, accumulates a lot of wealth and is extremely miserly, and whom other people follow.
Hadith 9321
عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ كُنْتُ فِي حَلْقَةٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ وَإِنَّ بَعْضَنَا لَيَسْتَتِرُ بِبَعْضٍ مِنَ الْعُرْيِ وَقَارِئٌ لَنَا يَقْرَأُ عَلَيْنَا فَنَحْنُ نَسْمَعُ إِلَى كِتَابِ اللَّهِ إِذْ وَقَفَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَعَدَ فِينَا لِيَعُدَّ نَفْسَهُ مَعَهُمْ فَكَفَّ الْقَارِئُ فَقَالَ ((مَا كُنْتُمْ تَقُولُونَ)) فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَانَ قَارِئٌ لَنَا يَقْرَأُ عَلَيْنَا كِتَابَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِيَدِهِ وَحَلَّقَ بِهَا يُومِئُ إِلَيْهِمْ ((أَنْ تَحَلَّقُوا)) فَاسْتَدَارَتِ الْحَلْقَةُ فَمَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَرَفَ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدًا غَيْرِي قَالَ فَقَالَ ((أَبْشِرُوا يَا مَعْشَرَ الصَّعَالِيكِ تَدْخُلُونَ الْجَنَّةَ قَبْلَ الْأَغْنِيَاءِ بِنِصْفِ يَوْمٍ وَذَلِكَ خَمْسُمِائَةِ عَامٍ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, he says: I was sitting in a gathering of the Ansar, and the situation was such that some people were hiding behind others for the sake of covering themselves, and a reciter was reciting to us and we were listening to the words of Allah Almighty. Meanwhile, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, also came to us and sat among us, so that he might count himself among them. Then the reciter stopped reciting. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: What were you saying? We said: O Messenger of Allah! Our reciter was reciting the Book of Allah Almighty to us. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, made a circle with his hand and, indicating, said: Make a circle like this. So the people turned and sat in a circle. I think that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did not recognize anyone except me. In any case, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: O group of the poor! Rejoice, for you will enter Paradise half a day, that is, five hundred years, before the wealthy people.
Hadith 9322
عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ انْظُرْ أَرْفَعَ رَجُلٍ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ)) فَنَظَرْتُ فَإِذَا رَجُلٌ عَلَيْهِ حُلَّةٌ قَالَ قُلْتُ هَذَا قَالَ ((انْظُرْ أَوْضَعَ رَجُلٍ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ)) قَالَ فَنَظَرْتُ فَإِذَا رَجُلٌ عَلَيْهِ أَخْلَاقٌ قَالَ قُلْتُ هَذَا قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَهَذَا أَفْضَلُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مِنْ مِلْءِ الْأَرْضِ مِثْلَ هَذَا))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu Dharr! Look, who is the most exalted person in the mosque? He says: I looked and suddenly saw a man who was wearing fine clothes. I said: This is the one. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: Now look, who is the lowest-ranked person in the mosque? I looked and saw a man wearing tattered clothes. I said: Yes, this is the one. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By Him in Whose hand is my soul! This (low-ranked) man will be better in the sight of Allah Almighty on the Day of Resurrection than that (exalted) man and the likes of him filling the earth.
Hadith 9323
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((اطَّلَعْتُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ فَرَأَيْتُ أَكْثَرَ أَهْلِهَا الْفُقَرَاءَ وَاطَّلَعْتُ فِي النَّارِ فَرَأَيْتُ أَكْثَرَ أَهْلِهَا الْأَغْنِيَاءَ وَالنِّسَاءَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I looked into Paradise, and I saw that most of its inhabitants were the poor; then when I looked into Hell, I found that most of its inhabitants were the wealthy and women.
Hadith 9324
عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ذَهَبَ الْأَغْنِيَاءُ يُصَلُّونَ وَيَصُومُونَ وَيَحُجُّونَ قَالَ ((وَأَنْتُمْ تَصُومُونَ وَتُصَلُّونَ وَتَحُجُّونَ)) قُلْتُ يَتَصَدَّقُونَ وَلَا نَتَصَدَّقُ قَالَ ((وَأَنْتَ فِيكَ صَدَقَةٌ رَفْعُكَ الْعَظْمَ عَنِ الطَّرِيقِ صَدَقَةٌ وَهِدَايَتُكَ الطَّرِيقَ صَدَقَةٌ وَعَوْنُكَ الضَّعِيفَ بِفَضْلِ قُوَّتِكَ صَدَقَةٌ وَبَيَانُكَ عَنِ الْأَرْتَمِ صَدَقَةٌ وَمُبَاضَعَتُكَ امْرَأَتَكَ صَدَقَةٌ)) قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ نَأْتِي شَهْوَتَنَا وَنُؤْجَرُ قَالَ ((أَرَأَيْتَ لَوْ جَعَلْتَهُ فِي حَرَامٍ أَكَانَ تَأْثَمُ)) قَالَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ ((فَتَحْتَسِبُونَ بِالشَّرِّ وَلَا تَحْتَسِبُونَ بِالْخَيْرِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I said, O Messenger of Allah! The wealthy people perform prayers, fast, and perform Hajj, thus they are advancing in reward. You (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You also fast, perform prayers, and perform Hajj. I said: Yes, but they give charity and we cannot give charity. You (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There are also forms of charity within you, for example, removing a bone from the path is charity, guiding someone on the road is charity, helping the weak with your extra strength is charity, clarifying on behalf of one who cannot speak clearly is charity, and having intercourse with your wife is charity. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Is it possible that we fulfill our desire and there is reward for us in it? You (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Tell me, if you were to use that private part in something unlawful, would you be sinful? I said: Yes. You (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then when you avoid evil with the intention of reward, and do a good deed with the intention of reward, will you not be rewarded?
Hadith 9325
عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّهُ شَكَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَاجَتَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((اصْبِرْ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ فَإِنَّ الْفَقْرَ إِلَى مَنْ يُحِبُّنِي مِنْكُمْ أَسْرَعُ مِنَ السَّيْلِ عَلَى أَعْلَى الْوَادِي وَمِنْ أَعْلَى الْجَبَلِ إِلَى أَسْفَلِهِ))
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he complained of his poverty to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Abu Sa'id! Be patient, for indeed, poverty and hardship rush towards the one who loves me with such speed as a flood flows from the height of a valley or from the peak of a mountain towards the lowlands."
Hadith 9326
عَنْ أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((قُمْتُ عَلَى بَابِ الْجَنَّةِ فَإِذَا عَامَّةُ مَنْ دَخَلَهَا الْمَسَاكِينُ وَإِذَا أَصْحَابُ الْجَدِّ)) وَقَالَ يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ وَغَيْرُهُ ((أَنَّ أَصْحَابَ الْجَدِّ مَحْبُوسُونَ إِلَّا أَصْحَابَ النَّارِ فَقَدْ أُمِرَ بِهِمْ إِلَى النَّارِ وَقُمْتُ عَلَى بَابِ النَّارِ فَإِذَا عَامَّةُ مَنْ يَدْخُلُهَا النِّسَاءُ))
Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I stood at the gate of Paradise and saw that the majority of those who entered it were common people and the poor, while those of high rank were held back (outside Paradise). As for the people of Hell, it had already been decreed that they would be taken to Hell. Then I stood at the gate of the Fire and saw that the majority of those who entered it were common women.
Hadith 9327
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((اطَّلَعْتُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ فَرَأَيْتُ أَكْثَرَ أَهْلِهَا الْفُقَرَاءَ وَاطَّلَعْتُ فِي النَّارِ فَرَأَيْتُ أَكْثَرَ أَهْلِهَا النِّسَاءَ))
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I looked into Paradise and saw that the majority of its inhabitants were the poor, then I looked into the Fire from above and saw that the majority of its inhabitants were women.
Hadith 9328
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((الْتَقَى مُؤْمِنَانِ عَلَى بَابِ الْجَنَّةِ مُؤْمِنٌ غَنِيٌّ وَمُؤْمِنٌ فَقِيرٌ كَانَا فِي الدُّنْيَا فَأُدْخِلَ الْفَقِيرُ الْجَنَّةَ وَحُبِسَ الْغَنِيُّ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ أَنْ يُحْبَسَ ثُمَّ أُدْخِلَ الْجَنَّةَ فَلَقِيَهُ الْفَقِيرُ فَيَقُولُ أَيْ أَخِي مَا ذَا حَبَسَكَ وَاللَّهِ لَقَدِ احْتُبِسْتَ حَتَّى خِفْتُ عَلَيْكَ فَيَقُولُ أَيْ أَخِي إِنِّي حُبِسْتُ بَعْدَكَ مَحْبَسًا فَظِيعًا كَرِيهًا وَمَا وَصَلْتُ إِلَيْكَ حَتَّى سَالَ مِنِّي الْعَرَقُ مَا لَوْ وَرَدَهُ أَلْفُ بَعِيرٍ كُلُّهَا آكِلَةُ حَمْضٍ لَصَدَرَتْ عَنْهُ رِوَاءً))
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Two believers will meet at the gate of Paradise, one will be wealthy and the other poor; they will have been friends in the world. The poor one will be admitted into Paradise, and the wealthy one will be held back for as long as Allah wills. Then, when he is admitted into Paradise and meets the poor one, the poor one will say: O my brother! What kept you back? By Allah, you were held back for so long that I began to fear for you. He will say: O my brother! After you, I was kept at such a place that was very terrifying and unpleasant, and until I reached you, I sweated so much that if a thousand camels that eat the hamd plant came to drink it, they would have drunk their fill and returned satisfied.
