بَابُ التَّرْغِيْبِ فِي الرَّحْمَةِ بِخَلْقِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى وَثَوَاب فَاعِلِهَا وَوَعِيدِ مَنْ لَمْ يَرْحَمْ
Chapter on encouragement to show mercy to the creation of Allah Most High, the reward for doing so, and the warning for those who do not show mercy
Hadith 9211
عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ قُرَّةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي لَأَذْبَحُ الشَّاةَ وَإِنِّي أَرْحَمُهَا أَوْ قَالَ إِنِّي لَأَرْحَمُ الشَّاةَ أَنْ أَذْبَحَهَا فَقَالَ وَالشَّاةَ إِنْ رَحِمْتَهَا رَحِمَكَ اللَّهُ
Sayyiduna Qarah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man said: O Messenger of Allah! Even when I slaughter a goat, I feel compassion for it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you show mercy to the goat, Allah Almighty will show mercy to you.
Hadith 9212
عَنْ جَرِيرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمْ لَا يُرْحَمْ وَمَنْ لَا يَغْفِرْ لَا يُغْفَرْ لَهُ
Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever does not show mercy, mercy is not shown to him, and whoever does not forgive, he is not forgiven.
Hadith 9213
عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ لَمْ يَرْحَمْ صَغِيرَنَا وَيُعَرِّفْ حَقَّ كَبِيرِنَا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He is not one of us who does not show mercy to our young and does not recognize the right of our elders.
Hadith 9214
عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّ مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمُ النَّاسَ لَا يَرْحَمُهُ اللَّهُ
Syedna Abu Saeed (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever does not show mercy to people, Allah Almighty does not show mercy to him.
Hadith 9215
عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ كَانَ جَرِيرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْبَجَلِيُّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فِي بَعْثٍ بِأَرْمِينِيَّةَ قَالَ فَأَصَابَتْهُمْ مَخْمَصَةٌ أَوْ مَجَاعَةٌ قَالَ فَكَتَبَ جَرِيرٌ إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَنْ لَمْ يَرْحَمِ النَّاسَ لَا يَرْحَمُهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَالَ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ فَأَتَاهُ فَقَالَ أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَأَقْفَلَهُمْ وَمَتَّعَهُمْ قَالَ أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ وَكَانَ أَبِي فِي ذَلِكَ الْجَيْشِ فَجَاءَ بِقَطِيفَةٍ مِمَّا مَتَّعَهُ مُعَاوِيَةُ
Abu Ishaq says: Sayyiduna Jarir bin Abdullah Bajali (may Allah be pleased with him) was present with an army at the place of Armenia. That army was afflicted with hunger. Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote a letter to Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever does not show mercy to people, Allah does not show mercy to him. Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) called him. When he came, he asked: Did you really hear this hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes. So he sent him back with supplies. Abu Ishaq says: My father was also in that army; he too brought a sheet from among the supplies that Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) had sent.
Hadith 9216
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى مِنْبَرِهِ يَقُولُ ((ارْحَمُوا تُرْحَمُوا وَاغْفِرُوا يَغْفِرِ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ وَيْلٌ لِأَقْمَاعِ الْقَوْلِ وَيْلٌ لِلْمُصِرِّينَ الَّذِينَ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى مَا فَعَلُوا وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ))
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said on the pulpit: Show mercy, mercy will be shown to you; forgive, Allah Almighty will forgive you. Woe to those who turn a deaf ear, and woe also to those who persist—those who knowingly persist in their evil deeds.
Hadith 9217
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الصَّادِقَ الْمَصْدُوقَ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ صَاحِبَ الْحُجْرَةِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ ((لَا تُنْزَعُ الرَّحْمَةُ إِلَّا مِنْ شَقِيٍّ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, who says: I heard the Truthful and Trusted, the one of the chamber, Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) saying: Mercy is only taken away from the one who is wretched.
Hadith 9218
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا قَالَ دَخَلَ عُيَيْنَةُ بْنُ حِصْنٍ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَرَآهُ يُقَبِّلُ حَسَنًا أَوْ حُسَيْنًا فَقَالَ لَهُ لَا تُقَبِّلْهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَقَدْ وُلِدَ لِي عَشَرَةٌ مَا قَبَّلْتُ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمْ لَا يُرْحَمْ))
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna ‘Uyaynah bin Hisn (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and saw that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was kissing Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) or Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: O Messenger of Allah! Do not kiss them; I have ten children and I have not kissed any of them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy.
Hadith 9219
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَتُقَبِّلُ الصِّبْيَانَ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا نُقَبِّلُهُمْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((مَا أَمْلِكُ أَنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ نَزَعَ مِنْ قَلْبِكَ الرَّحْمَةَ))
Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that a Bedouin came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Do you kiss children? By Allah, we do not kiss them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah has deprived your heart of mercy, so I can do nothing for you.
Hadith 9220
عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ قَالَ تَنَاوَلَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ رَجُلًا بِشَيْءٍ فَنَهَاهُ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالُوا أَغْضَبْتَ الْأَمِيرَ فَأَتَاهُ فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَمْ أُرِدْ أَنْ أُغْضِبَكَ وَلَكِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ ((إِنَّ أَشَدَّ النَّاسِ عَذَابًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَشَدُّ النَّاسِ عَذَابًا لِلنَّاسِ فِي الدُّنْيَا))
Khalid bin Hakim bin Hizam says: Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) punished a man for some reason, but Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) stopped him. People said: You have angered the leader. So he went to him and said: It was not my intention to anger you, but I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that on the Day of Resurrection, the most severe punishment will be given to the one who subjected people to the harshest punishment in the world.
Hadith 9221
عَنْ عَرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ أَنَّهُ مَرَّ بِأُنَاسٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الذِّمَّةِ قَدْ أُقِيمُوا فِي الشَّمْسِ بِالشَّامِ فَقَالَ مَا هَؤُلَاءِ قَالُوا بَقِيَ عَلَيْهِمْ شَيْءٌ مِنَ الْخَرَاجِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي أَشْهَدُ أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ ((إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يُعَذِّبُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ الَّذِينَ يُعَذِّبُونَ النَّاسَ)) قَالَ وَأَمِيرُ النَّاسِ يَوْمَئِذٍ عُمَيْرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ عَلَى فِلَسْطِينَ قَالَ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ فَحَدَّثَهُ فَخَلَّى سَبِيلَهُمْ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hisham Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) that he passed by some dhimmi people who had been made to stand in the sun in Syria. He asked: What have they done? The people said: Some of the imposed tax (kharaj) is still due on them. He said: Indeed, I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Indeed, Allah Almighty will punish those who punish people today, on the Day of Resurrection. At that time, the governor of Palestine was Umair bin Sa’d. Sayyiduna Hakim (may Allah be pleased with him) went to him and narrated this hadith to him, so he released them.
