بَابُ التَّرْغِيْبِ فِي عَظْمِ الْغَيْظِ وَعَدْمِ الْغَضَبِ
Chapter on encouragement to suppress anger and avoid rage
Hadith 9169
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا مِنْ حَدِيثٍ طَوِيلٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ ((مَا مِنْ جَرْعَةٍ أَحَبَّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ جَرْعَةِ غَيْظٍ يَكْظِمُهَا عَبْدٌ مَا كَظَمَهَا عَبْدٌ لِلَّهِ إِلَّا مَلَأَ اللَّهُ جَوْفَهُ إِيمَانًا))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There is no gulp more beloved to Allah Almighty than the gulp of anger which a servant swallows. When a servant swallows such a gulp for the sake of Allah Almighty, Allah fills his heart with faith.
Hadith 9170
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((مَا تَجَرَّعَ عَبْدٌ جَرْعَةً أَفْضَلَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ مِنْ جَرْعَةِ غَيْظٍ يَكْظِمُهَا ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The servant has not swallowed any gulp more virtuous in the sight of Allah Almighty than the gulp of anger which he swallows seeking the pleasure of Allah Almighty.
Hadith 9171
عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّهُ قَالَ ((مَنْ كَظَمَ غَيْظَهُ وَهُوَ يَقْدِرُ عَلَى أَنْ يَنْتَصِرَ دَعَاهُ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى عَلَى رُءُوسِ الْخَلَائِقِ حَتَّى يُخَيِّرَهُ فِي حُورِ الْعِينِ أَيَّتَهُنَّ شَاءَ وَمَنْ تَرَكَ أَنْ يَلْبَسَ صَالِحَ الثِّيَابِ وَهُوَ يَقْدِرُ عَلَيْهِ تَوَاضُعًا لِلَّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى دَعَاهُ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ عَلَى رُءُوسِ الْخَلَائِقِ حَتَّى يُخَيِّرَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِي حُلَلِ الْإِيمَانِ أَيَّتَهُنَّ شَاءَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu’adh bin Anas al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever swallows his anger, even though he is able to take revenge, Allah Almighty will call him before all of creation and will give him the choice to take whichever houri with beautiful eyes he desires. And whoever, out of humility for Allah, does not wear fine clothes even though he is able to do so, Allah Almighty will also call him before all of creation and will give him the choice to wear whichever garment of faith he desires.
Hadith 9172
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ ((لَيْسَ الشَّدِيدُ بِالصُّرَعَةِ وَلَكِنَّ الشَّدِيدَ الَّذِي يَمْلِكُ نَفْسَهُ عِنْدَ الْغَضَبِ))
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The one who overpowers others is not truly strong; rather, the real strong and powerful person is the one who controls himself at the time of anger.
Hadith 9173
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ((مَا تَعُدُّونَ فِيكُمُ الصُّرَعَةَ)) قَالَ قُلْنَا الَّذِي لَا يَصْرَعُهُ الرِّجَالُ قَالَ ((لَا وَلَكِنَّ الصُّرَعَةَ الَّذِي يَمْلِكُ نَفْسَهُ عِنْدَ الْغَضَبِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whom do you consider to be a strong wrestler? We said: The one whom others cannot overpower. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, the strong wrestler is the one who controls himself at the time of anger.
Hadith 9174
عَنِ ابْنِ حَصْبَةَ أَوْ أَبِي حَصْبَةَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ شَهِدَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَخْطُبُ فَقَالَ ((تَدْرُونَ مَا الصُّرَعَةُ)) قَالَ قَالُوا الْصَّرِيعُ قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((الصُّرَعَةُ كُلُّ الصُّرَعَةِ الصُّرَعَةُ كُلُّ الصُّرَعَةِ الرَّجُلُ يَغْضَبُ فَيَشْتَدُّ غَضَبُهُ وَيَحْمَرُّ وَجْهُهُ وَيَقْشَعِرُّ شَعْرُهُ فَيَصْرَعُ غَضَبَهُ وَإِنَّمَا تُطْفَأُ النَّارُ بِالْمَاءِ))
Ibn Hisbah or Abu Hisbah narrates from a companion who was present at the time of the address of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Do you know who the real wrestler is? They said: The one who throws others down. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The real wrestler, the greatest wrestler, is the person who, when anger comes upon him and his anger becomes intense, his face turns red and his hair stands on end, but he controls his anger. And indeed, fire is extinguished only with water.
Hadith 9175
عَنْ جَارِيَةَ بْنِ قُدَامَةَ السَّعْدِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قُلْ لِي قَوْلًا يَنْفَعُنِي وَأَقْلِلْ لَعَلِّي أَعِيهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((لَا تَغْضَبْ)) فَأَعَادَ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى أَعَادَ عَلَيْهِ مِرَارًا كُلَّ ذَلِكَ يَقُولُ ((لَا تَغْضَبْ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jariyah bin Qudamah Sa'di, may Allah be pleased with him, that a man asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: O Messenger of Allah! Tell me something beneficial, but it should be brief so that I can remember it. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Do not become angry. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, repeated this several times, and each time he said: Do not become angry.
Hadith 9176
عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ قَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَوْصِنِي قَالَ ((لَا تَغْضَبْ)) قَالَ قَالَ الرَّجُلُ فَفَكَّرْتُ حِينَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا قَالَ فَإِذَا الْغَضَبُ يَجْمَعُ الشَّرَّ كُلَّهُ
A companion of the Messenger narrates that a man said: O Messenger of Allah! Advise me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not become angry. That man said: When I reflected upon the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I concluded that anger encompasses all evil.
Hadith 9177
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ مُرْنِي بِأَمْرٍ وَلَا تُكْثِرْ عَلَيَّ حَتَّى أَعْقِلَهُ قَالَ ((لَا تَغْضَبْ)) فَأَعَادَ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ ((لَا تَغْضَبْ))
Syedna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates that a man came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: Give me a command and do not mention many things, so that I may understand it. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Do not become angry. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, repeated this statement, saying: Do not become angry.
Hadith 9178
عَنْ عَطِيَّةَ السَّعْدِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((إِذَا اسْتَشَاطَ السُّلْطَانُ تَسَلَّطَ الشَّيْطَانُ))
Sayyiduna Atiyyah Sa'di (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When a ruler becomes enraged (and is ablaze with anger), at that moment Satan takes control.
Hadith 9179
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا ذَا يُبَاعِدُنِي مِنْ غَضَبِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَالَ ((لَا تَغْضَبْ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "What thing can keep me away from the wrath of Allah Almighty?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Do not become angry."
