بَابُ التَّرْغِيْبِ فِي سِتْرِ عَوْرَاتِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَعَدَمِ إشاعتها
Chapter on encouragement to conceal the faults of Muslims and not to publicize them
Hadith 9127
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ قَالَ قَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ رَكِبَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ إِلَى عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ إِلَى مِصْرَ فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَائِلُكَ عَنْ أَمْرٍ لَمْ يَبْقَ مِمَّنْ حَضَرَهُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَّا أَنَا وَأَنْتَ كَيْفَ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ فِي سِتْرِ الْمُؤْمِنِ فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ ((مَنْ سَتَرَ مُؤْمِنًا فِي الدُّنْيَا عَلَى عَوْرَةٍ سَتَرَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ)) فَرَجَعَ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ فَمَا حَلَّ رَحْلَهُ يُحَدِّثُ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ
Ibn Jurayj said: Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) rode and reached Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) in Egypt and said: I am going to ask you about something regarding which, among the companions, only you and I remain who were present with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of its narration. So tell me, what hadith did you hear from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding concealing a believer’s faults? He said: Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever conceals the faults of a believer in this world, Allah Almighty will cover him on the Day of Resurrection.
Hadith 9128
عَنْ مُنِيبٍ عَنْ عَمِّهِ قَالَ بَلَغَ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ ((مَنْ سَتَرَ أَخَاهُ الْمُسْلِمَ فِي الدُّنْيَا سَتَرَهُ اللَّهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ)) فَرَحَّلَ وَهُوَ بِمِصْرَ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ الْحَدِيثِ قَالَ نَعَمْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ ((مَنْ سَتَرَ أَخَاهُ الْمُسْلِمَ فِي الدُّنْيَا سَتَرَهُ اللَّهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ)) قَالَ وَأَنَا قَدْ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Muneeb narrates from his uncle that when a companion learned that another companion was narrating this hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that whoever conceals the faults of his Muslim brother in this world, Allah Almighty will conceal his faults on the Day of Resurrection. So this man packed his belongings for the journey, while the other man was in Egypt. Nevertheless, he reached him and asked about this hadith. In response, he said: Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever conceals the faults of his Muslim brother in this world, Allah Almighty will conceal his faults on the Day of Resurrection. I myself heard this hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 9129
عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ أَنَّ عُقْبَةَ أَتَى مَسْلَمَةَ بْنَ مَخْلَدٍ بِمِصْرَ وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ رَكِبَ عُقْبَةُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ إِلَى مَسْلَمَةَ بْنِ مَخْلَدٍ وَهُوَ أَمِيرٌ عَلَى مِصْرَ وَكَانَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْبَوَّابِ شَيْءٌ فَسَمِعَ صَوْتَهُ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَمْ آتِكَ زَائِرًا وَلَكِنِّي جِئْتُكَ لِحَاجَةٍ أَتَذْكُرُ يَوْمَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((مَنْ عَلِمَ مِنْ أَخِيهِ سَيِّئَةً فَسَتَرَهَا سَتَرَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ)) فَقَالَ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ لِهَذَا جِئْتُ
Makhool says: Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Sayyiduna Muslamah bin Makhlad in Egypt. In one narration, it is stated: Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) mounted his ride and reached Sayyiduna Muslamah bin Makhlad (may Allah be pleased with him), while he was the governor of Egypt. There was some dispute between him and the guard. Sayyiduna Muslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) himself heard the voice and permitted him to enter. He said: This time I have come to visit you, not for any personal need. The matter is, do you remember that day when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said that whoever comes to know of his brother’s fault but conceals it, Allah Almighty will conceal him on the Day of Resurrection? He said: Yes, I remember. He said: I have come for this purpose.
Hadith 9130
عَنْ دُخَيْنٍ كَاتِبِ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِعُقْبَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ إِنَّ لَنَا جِيرَانًا يَشْرَبُونَ الْخَمْرَ وَأَنَا دَاعٍ لَهُمُ الشُّرَطَ فَيَأْخُذُوهُمْ فَقَالَ لَا تَفْعَلْ وَلَكِنْ عِظْهُمْ وَتَهَدَّدْهُمْ قَالَ فَفَعَلَ فَلَمْ يَنْتَهُوا قَالَ فَجَاءَهُ دُخَيْنٌ فَقَالَ إِنِّي نَهَيْتُهُمْ فَلَمْ يَنْتَهُوا وَأَنَا دَاعٍ لَهُمُ الشُّرَطَ فَيَأْخُذُوهُمْ فَقَالَ عُقْبَةُ وَيْحَكَ لَا تَفْعَلْ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ ((مَنْ سَتَرَ عَوْرَةَ مُؤْمِنٍ فَكَأَنَّمَا اسْتَحْيَا مَوْءُودَةً مِنْ قَبْرِهَا)) وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ ((كَانَ كَمَنْ أَحْيَا مَوْءُودَةً مِنْ قَبْرِهَا))
Dukhain, the scribe of Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him), says: I said to Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him): Some of our neighbors drink alcohol, and I call the police for them so that they may catch them, but he said: Do not do that; rather, admonish and warn them. He did so, but they did not desist. So Dukhain came again and said: Indeed, I have forbidden them, but they did not desist, so now I am going to call the police for them so that they may catch them. Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Woe to you, do not do that, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever conceals the fault of a Muslim, it is as if he has given life to a girl who was to be buried alive. In another narration: He will be like the one who brings a girl buried alive out of her grave alive.
Hadith 9131
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا يَسْتُرُ عَبْدٌ عَبْدًا فِي الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا سَتَرَهُ اللَّهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever conceals the faults of a servant in this world, Allah Almighty will conceal his faults on the Day of Resurrection.
