Harith bin Abdur Rahman says: I was sitting with Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman when a man from Banu Ghifar came to us; he was the son of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Tuhfah (may Allah be pleased with him). Abu Salamah said to this man: Will you not tell us the incident of your father? He said: My father, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Tuhfah (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated to me that when guests would become numerous with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: Let each man take a guest to his home. One night, many guests gathered, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Let each man go with his companion. I, Abdullah bin Tuhfah, was among those who went with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the house, he said: Aisha! Is there anything to eat? She said: Yes, there is Hawaisah (a dish prepared from dates, cheese, and ghee); I had prepared it for your iftar. Then she brought it in a small bowl. First, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took it himself, ate some of it, and then said: Eat in the name of Allah. So we ate from it until, due to being so full, we could not even look at it. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the lady: Is there any drink? She said: Yes, there is a little milk; I had prepared it for you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bring it. So she brought it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) took it, raised it to his mouth, drank a little from it, and then said: Drink in the name of Allah. So we drank, until, by Allah, due to being so satiated, we could not even look at it. Then we left from there and came to the mosque, and I lay down on my face. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and began to call the people for prayer, saying: Prayer, prayer. And when he (peace and blessings be upon him) would come out, he would awaken the people for prayer. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by me and I was lying on my face, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Who is this? I said: It is I, Abdullah bin Tuhfah (may Allah be pleased with him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah Almighty dislikes this manner of lying down.

Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the people of Suffa were poor. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) once said: Whoever has food for two people, let him take a third person; whoever has food for four people, let him take a fifth or a sixth. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came, so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took ten people and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) took three people. Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) says: In the house were myself, my father, my mother, and a servant of ours and of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him); the narrator does not remember whether he mentioned the wife or not. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) ate the evening meal with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then stayed there until I had performed the Isha prayer, then he returned and remained with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) until he became drowsy, then after much of the night had passed, he returned home. His wife said to him: What kept you from your guests? He said: Did you not give them the evening meal? She said: They refused until you came; we presented the food to them, but their refusal prevailed over us. Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I left from there and hid. He said: O Ghunthar! or O Antar! Then he supplicated against me and spoke harshly, and said to the guests: Eat, may it not be pleasant! By Allah, I will not eat at all. The guest also swore that he would not eat until Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) ate. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This is from Satan. Then he called for the food and ate, and said: By Allah, every morsel we picked up, what was beneath it increased even more, until they were satisfied and the food was more than before. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) looked at it, he saw that the food was as much as before, rather even more. So he said to his wife: O sister of Banu Firas! What is this? She said: By the coolness of my eye! It seems more than before. He repeated this three times. Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) ate from it and said: That oath was from Satan. Then he ate a morsel and then took the food to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and that food was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the morning. Abdur Rahman says: There was a pact between us and the people, and its term had expired, so we appointed twelve leaders, each leader with some people; Allah knows best how many they were, but in any case, they were sent with them, and all of them ate from that food.
