Chapter on encouragement to be kind to neighbors
Hadith 9070
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيُكْرِمْ ضَيْفَهُ وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلَا يُؤْذِ جَارَهُ وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيَقُلْ خَيْرًا أَوْ لِيَسْكُتْ
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor his guest; whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not harm his neighbor; and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.
Hadith 9071
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلُهُ إِلَّا أَنَّ فِيهِ فَلْيَقُلْ خَيْرًا أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ بَدَلَ يَسْكُتْ
Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) also narrated a similar hadith from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), except that in it the words are "liyasmut" instead of "liyaskut". (Both have the same meaning.)
Hadith 9072
عَنْ أَبِي شُرَيْحٍ الْخُزَاعِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَكَانَتْ لَهُ صُحْبَةٌ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيُكْرِمْ ضَيْفَهُ وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيُحْسِنْ إِلَى جَارِهِ وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيَقُلْ خَيْرًا أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh Khuzai (may Allah be pleased with him), who had the honor of companionship, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor his guest; whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should do good to his neighbor; and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.
Hadith 9073
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ وَاللَّهِ لَا يُؤْمِنُ وَاللَّهِ لَا يُؤْمِنُ وَاللَّهِ لَا يُؤْمِنُ قَالَهَا ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ قَالُوا وَمَا ذَاكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ الْجَارُ لَا يَأْمَنُ جَارُهُ بَوَائِقَهُ قَالُوا وَمَا بَوَائِقُهُ قَالَ شَرُّهُ
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: By Allah! That servant is not a believer, by Allah! That servant is not a believer, by Allah! That servant is not a person of faith. He said this three times. The companions asked: O Messenger of Allah! And who is he? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The person whose neighbor is not safe from his harm. They asked: What is meant by "bawa'iq"? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: His evil.
Hadith 9074
عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْمُزَنِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ رِجَالٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيَتَّقِ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَلْيُكْرِمْ جَارَهُ وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيَتَّقِ اللَّهَ وَلْيُكْرِمْ ضَيْفَهُ وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيَتَّقِ اللَّهَ وَلْيَقُلْ حَقًّا أَوْ لِيَسْكُتْ
Some of the Companions narrate that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor his neighbor; whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should fear Allah and honor his guest; and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should fear Allah and speak good or remain silent.
Hadith 9075
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ وَيَزِيدُ قَالَ أَنَا هِشَامٌ عَنْ حَفْصَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ عَنِ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ (قَالَ يَزِيدُ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ) قَالَ خَرَجْتُ مِنْ أَهْلِي أُرِيدُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَإِذَا أَنَا بِهِ قَائِمٌ وَرَجُلٌ مَعَهُ مُقْبِلٌ عَلَيْهِ فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّ لَهُمَا حَاجَةً قَالَ فَقَالَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى جَعَلْتُ أَرْثِي لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ طُولِ الْقِيَامِ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَقَدْ قَامَ بِكَ الرَّجُلُ حَتَّى جَعَلْتُ أَرْثِي لَكَ مِنْ طُولِ الْقِيَامِ قَالَ وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتَهُ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَتَدْرِي مَنْ هُوَ قُلْتُ لَا قَالَ ذَاكَ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ مَا زَالَ يُوصِينِي بِالْجَارِ حَتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ سَيُوَرِّثُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَمَا إِنَّكَ لَوْ سَلَّمْتَ عَلَيْهِ رَدَّ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامَ
It is narrated from an Ansari man, may Allah be pleased with him, who says: I left my house with the intention of meeting the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. When I reached him, I saw that a man was engaged with him. I thought that they must have some need. By Allah! The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood for so long that I began to feel pity for him. Anyway, when that man left, I said: O Messenger of Allah! That man kept you standing for so long that I began to feel pity for you. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Did you see him? I said: Yes. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Do you know who he was? I said: No. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: That was Jibreel, peace be upon him. He advised me so much about the neighbor that I began to think he would soon make him an heir as well. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: If you had greeted him, he would have replied to your greeting.
Hadith 9076
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَا زَالَ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ يُوصِينِي بِالْجَارِ حَتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ سَيُوَرِّثُهُ
Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Jibreel (peace be upon him) advised me so much regarding the neighbor that I began to think he would make him an heir as well.
Hadith 9077
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَا زَالَ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ يُوصِينِي بِالْجَارِ حَتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ سَيُوَرِّثُهُ أَوْ قَالَ خَشِيتُ أَنْ يُوَرِّثَهُ
Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Jibreel (peace be upon him) advised me so much regarding the neighbor that I began to think he would make him an heir as well. In another narration, it is stated: I began to fear that he would declare him an heir as well.
Hadith 9078
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلُهُ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) has also narrated a similar hadith from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).
Hadith 9079
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَحْوُهُ
Syedna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated a similar hadith from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.
Hadith 9080
عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُوصِي بِالْجَارِ حَتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ سَيُوَرِّثَهُ
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He (i.e., Jibril) advised me so much about the neighbor that I began to think he would make him my heir.
Hadith 9081
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ خَيْرُ الْأَصْحَابِ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ خَيْرُهُمْ لِصَاحِبِهِ وَخَيْرُ الْجِيرَانِ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ خَيْرُهُمْ لِجَارِهِ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The best companion in the sight of Allah is the one who is best to his companion, and the best neighbor in the sight of Allah is the one who is best to his neighbor.
Hadith 9082
عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَهُ يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ إِذَا طَبَخْتَ فَأَكْثِرِ الْمَرَقَةَ وَتَعَاهَدْ جِيرَانَكَ أَوِ اقْسِمْ بَيْنَ جِيرَانِكَ
Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu Dharr! When you cook a broth-based stew, increase its broth and take care of your neighbors, or (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said) distribute it among your neighbors.
Hadith 9083
عَنْ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ لَا يَشْبَعُ الرَّجُلُ دُونَ جَارِهِ
Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A person is not satiated except with his neighbor.
