بَابُ تَفْسِيرِ هَا وَصِفَةِ الْكَوْثَرِ
Chapter on its explanation and the description of Al-Kawthar
Hadith 8843
عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ لِي مُحَارِبُ بْنُ دِثَارٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ مَا سَمِعْتَ سَعِيدَ بْنَ جُبَيْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَذْكُرُ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا فِي الْكَوْثَرِ فَقُلْتُ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ هَذَا الْخَيْرُ الْكَثِيرُ فَقَالَ مُحَارِبٌ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ مَا أَقَلَّ مَا يَسْقُطُ لِابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَوْلٌ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا يَقُولُ لَمَّا أُنْزِلَتْ إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ [سورة الكوثر: ١] قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ هُوَ نَهَرٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ حَافَتَاهُ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ يَجْرِي عَلَى جَنَادِلِ الدُّرِّ وَالْيَاقُوتِ شَرَابُهُ أَحْلَى مِنَ الْعَسَلِ وَأَشَدُّ بَيَاضًا مِنَ اللَّبَنِ وَأَبْرَدُ مِنَ الثَّلْجِ وَأَطْيَبُ مِنْ رِيحِ الْمِسْكِ قَالَ صَدَقَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ هَذَا وَاللَّهِ الْخَيْرُ الْكَثِيرُ
‘Ata bin Sa’ib says: Muharib bin Dithar said to me: Have you heard anything from Sa‘id bin Jubayr about al-Kawthar from Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both)? He said: Yes, he has said that al-Kawthar means abundant good. Muharib said: Subhan Allah, the statement of Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) is indeed reliable. I heard Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) saying: When {إِنَّا أَ عْطَیْنَاکَ الْکَوْثَرَ} was revealed, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is a river in Paradise, its banks are of gold, it flows in channels of pearls and rubies, its water is sweeter than honey, whiter than milk, colder than ice, and more fragrant than musk. Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) spoke the absolute truth. By Allah! This is indeed abundant good and blessing.
Hadith 8844
عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِعَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا مَا الْكَوْثَرُ قَالَتْ نَهَرٌ أُعْطِيَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي بُطْنَانِ الْجَنَّةِ قَالَ قُلْتُ وَمَا بُطْنَانُ الْجَنَّةِ قَالَتْ وَسَطُهَا حَافَّتَاهُ دُرَّةٌ مُجَوَّفَةٌ
Abu Ubaidah bin Abdullah narrates, he says: I asked Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): What is Kawthar? She said: It is a river, which is located in the middle part of Paradise, it has been given to you (peace and blessings be upon him), and on its banks are hollow pearls.
Hadith 8845
عَنِ الْمُخْتَارِ بْنِ فُلْفُلٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ أَغْفَى النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِغْفَاءَةً فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مُتَبَسِّمًا إِمَّا قَالَ لَهُمْ وَإِمَّا قَالُوا لَهُ لِمَ ضَحِكْتَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّهُ أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيَّ آنِفًا سُورَةٌ فَقَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ [سورة الكوثر] حَتَّى خَتَمَهَا قَالَ هَلْ تَدْرُونَ مَا الْكَوْثَرُ قَالُوا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ هُوَ نَهَرٌ أَعْطَانِيهِ رَبِّي عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي الْجَنَّةِ عَلَيْهِ خَيْرٌ كَثِيرٌ يَرِدُ عَلَيْهِ أُمَّتِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ آنِيَتُهُ عَدَدُ الْكَوَاكِبِ يُخْتَلَجُ الْعَبْدُ مِنْهُمْ فَأَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ إِنَّهُ مِنْ أُمَّتِي فَيُقَالُ لِي إِنَّكَ لَا تَدْرِي مَا أَحْدَثُوا بَعْدَكَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that a drowsiness overcame the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head smiling. The people asked: Why are you smiling, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Just now a surah has been revealed to me. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited {بِسْمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیمِ إِنَّا أَ عْطَیْنَاکَ الْکَوْثَرَ}, until he completed the entire surah, and then said: Do you know what al-Kawthar is? The people said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is a river which my Lord has granted me in Paradise, in it is much goodness. My ummah will come to me at this river on the Day of Resurrection. Its vessels will be as numerous as the stars, but some people will be prevented from reaching me. I will say: O my Lord! They are from my ummah. It will be said to me: You do not know what they innovated after you.
Hadith 8846
(وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا) فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ [سورة الكوثر: ١] أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ هُوَ نَهَرٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَأَيْتُ نَهْرًا فِي الْجَنَّةِ حَافَتَاهُ قِبَابُ اللُّؤْلُؤِ فَقُلْتُ مَا هَذَا يَا جِبْرِيلُ قَالَ هَذَا الْكَوْثَرُ الَّذِي أَعْطَاكَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding the statement of Allah Almighty {إِنَّا أَ عْطَیْنَاکَ الْکَوْثَرَ}, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: This is a river in Paradise. He, peace and blessings be upon him, further said: I saw a river in Paradise, on its banks were tents of pearls. I asked: O Jibril! What is this? He said: This is the Kawthar which Allah Almighty has granted to you.
