It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mahmood bin Labeed (may Allah be pleased with him) that when these verses were revealed: {أَلْہَاکُمُالتَّکَاثُرُ … … لَتُسْأَلُنَّیَوْمَئِذٍعَنِالنَّعِیمِ} the people said: O Messenger of Allah! About which blessings will we be questioned? Only water and dates, these two things are our food, and our swords are hanging on our necks, and we are constantly facing the enemy, so about which blessing will we be questioned? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Soon these blessings will come.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair bin Al-Awwam, may Allah be pleased with him, that when this verse was revealed: { ثُمَّلَتُسْأَلُنَّیَوْمَئِذٍعَنِالنَّعِیمِ} … Then, on that Day, you will surely be questioned about the blessings. Sayyiduna Zubair said: O Messenger of Allah! Which blessings will we be questioned about? Now we have only these two black blessings—water and dates. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Beware! Soon there will be (many) blessings.
