Narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): It was the day of the Jews’ festival. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went towards a synagogue of the Jews, and I was with him. Our arrival displeased them. Nevertheless, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: O assembly of Jews! Tell me of twelve (12) men from among your group who bear witness that there is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; Allah Almighty will remove from you the wrath upon wrath that He has placed upon you under the blue sky. The Jews remained silent; none of them replied. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated the question, but no one answered. He asked a third time, but again there was no response. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself said: You are denying. By Allah! I am al-Hashir (the one after whom people will be gathered), I am al-‘Aqib (after whom there is no prophet), and I am the chosen Prophet. Whether you believe or deny, it makes no difference. Then he turned back, and I was with him. When we were about to leave, a man called out to us from behind. He was Abdullah bin Salam. He said: O Muhammad! Wait. He came and addressed the Jews, saying: O group of Jews! According to your knowledge, what kind of man am I? They said: By Allah! According to our knowledge, there is no one more learned in the Book of Allah and more knowledgeable in jurisprudence than you, nor was there anyone more learned and knowledgeable than your father before you, nor was there anyone more learned than your grandfather before your father. Abdullah said: Then I bear witness that this is the Prophet of Allah, whose mention you find in the Torah. The Jews immediately changed and said: You are lying. Then they denied everything and spoke ill of Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Now your word will never be accepted. Just now you were praising him, and when he has believed, you call him a liar and use bad words about him. Your word will never be accepted. Now we went out, and we were three: myself, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him). Allah Almighty revealed the verse about this: {قُلْ أَرَأَیْتُمْ إِنْ کَانَ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللّٰہِ وَکَفَرْتُمْ بِہِ وَشَہِدَ شَاہِدٌ مِنْ بَنِی إِسْرَائِیلَ عَلٰی مِثْلِہِ فَآمَنَ وَاسْتَکْبَرْتُمْ إِنَّ اللّٰہَ لَا یَہْدِی الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِینَ} … Say, “Have you considered: if it is from Allah and you disbelieve in it, while a witness from the Children of Israel has testified to something similar and believed, but you acted arrogantly—indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.”
