Hadith 8735
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, that Abu Talib fell ill. The Quraysh came to him, and the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, also came to visit him. There was space for a man to sit by his head, but Abu Jahl stood up and sat in that place. Then the Quraysh said: "Abu Talib! Your nephew speaks ill of our gods." Abu Talib addressed the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: "What is the matter? Your people are complaining about you." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "O my uncle! I want to unite them upon a single word, by accepting which the Arabs will submit to them and the non-Arabs will pay them jizya." Abu Talib said: "What is that word?" The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah)." They all stood up and began to say: "Has he made all the gods into one God?" At that time, these verses of Surah Sad were revealed: {صٓ وَالْقُرْآنِ ذِی الذِّکْر … … إِنَّ ہٰذَا لَشَیْئٌ عُجَابٌ}
Hadith 8736
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Abu Talib fell ill, a group of the Quraysh came to visit him, among whom was Abu Jahl. They said: "Abu Talib! Your nephew insults our gods, he says this, he says that, and he does such and such." Abu Talib sent a message to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to come to him. There was an empty place near Abu Talib for one person; Abu Jahl feared that if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered, he would sit close by, and then perhaps Abu Talib would feel compassion for his nephew, so he quickly sat in that empty place. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered and found no place to sit, he sat near the door. Abu Talib said: "O nephew! Your people are complaining about you, that you speak ill of their gods, you say this and that, and you do such and such?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O my uncle! I want from them one word, by which the Arabs will submit to them and the non-Arabs will pay them jizya." They said: "What is that word? By your father! We will accept this and ten more like it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah)." Hearing this, they stood up shaking the dust from their clothes and said (as Allah Almighty said:) {اَجَعَلَ الْآلِھَۃَ اِلٰہًا وَاحِدًا اِنَّ ھٰذَا لَشَیْئٌ عُجَابٌ} ... "Has he made all the gods into one God? Indeed, this is a strange thing." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued reciting until he reached {لَمَّا یَذُوْقُوْا عَذَابِ}.
