Fath al-Rabbani

Sayyiduna Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty says: {ثُمَّ أَ وْرَثْنَا الْکِتَابَ الَّذِینَ اصْطَفَیْنَا مِنْ عِبَادِنَا فَمِنْہُمْ ظَالِمٌ لِنَفْسِہِ وَمِنْہُمْ مُقْتَصِدٌ وَمِنْہُمْ سَابِقٌ بِالْخَیْرَاتِ بِإِذْنِ اللّٰہِ} … Then We made those whom We chose from among Our servants inherit the Book; but of them are some who wrong themselves, and of them are some who are moderate, and of them are some who, by Allah’s leave, are foremost in good deeds. That is the great bounty. Its explanation is that those who are foremost in good deeds will enter Paradise without reckoning, those who are moderate will have an easy reckoning, and those who wronged themselves will be detained in the Plain of Gathering, then Allah Almighty will compensate them with His mercy. These are the ones who will say: {اَلْحمْدُ لِلّٰہِ الَّذِیْٓ اَذْہَبَ عَنَّا الْحَزَنَ اِنَّ رَبَّنَا لَغَفُوْرٌ شَکُوْرٌ۔ الَّذِیْٓ اَحَلَّنَا دَارَ الْمُقَامَۃِ مِنْ فَضْلِہٖ لَایَمَسُّنَا فِیْہَا نَصَبٌ وَّلَا یَمَسُّنَافِیْہَا لُغُوْبٌ۔} … And they will say, “All praise is due to Allah, who has removed from us [all] sorrow. Indeed, our Lord is certainly Most Forgiving, Most Appreciative. He who has settled us in the home of permanence out of His bounty; no fatigue will touch us therein, nor will weariness touch us therein.”

It is narrated from Abu Thabit that a man entered the mosque of Damascus and made this supplication: O my Allah! Change my loneliness into intimacy, make my poverty a source of mercy, and grant me a beloved and righteous companion. Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) heard these words of his and said: If you are truthful, then I am more fortunate for your supplication. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: By {فَمِنْہُمْ ظَالِمٌ لِنَفْسِہِ} is meant the oppressor, who will be seized in the field of resurrection and will be afflicted with grief and distress; by {وَمِنْہُمْ مُقْتَصِدٌ} is meant the person whose reckoning will be easy; and {وَمِنْہُمْ سَابِقٌ بِالْخَیْرَاتِ} are those who will enter Paradise without reckoning.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding this verse: {ثُمَّ أَ وْرَثْنَا الْکِتَابَ الَّذِینَ اصْطَفَیْنَا مِنْ عِبَادِنَا فَمِنْہُمْ ظَالِمٌ لِنَفْسِہِ وَمِنْہُمْ مُقْتَصِدٌ وَمِنْہُمْ سَابِقٌ بِالْخَیْرَاتِ بِإِذْنِ اللّٰہِ} … Then We made those whom We chose from among Our servants the inheritors of the Book; then among them is he who wrongs himself, and among them is he who is moderate, and among them is he who, by Allah’s permission, is foremost in good deeds. That is the great bounty. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said that (regarding those mentioned in this verse) the rank of all these people is the same and all will enter Paradise.
