Hadith 8608
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of Badr, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked towards his companions, and they were a little over three hundred. Then he looked towards the polytheists, and they were a little over one thousand. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards the Qiblah and raised his hands. He was wearing a waist-wrapper and had a cloak draped over him. Then he supplicated: “My Allah! Where is the help You promised me? O my Allah! Fulfill what You have promised me. O my Allah! If this group of Muslims is destroyed, then You will never be worshipped on the earth.” He continued to seek help from his Lord and called upon Him until his cloak fell off. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came forward, picked up the cloak, and placed it over him, and clung to him from behind and then said: “O Prophet of Allah! The supplication you have made to your Lord is sufficient for you. Allah will fulfill what He has promised you.” At that time, Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: {إِذْ تَسْتَغِیثُوْنَ رَبَّکُمْ فَاسْتَجَابَ لَکُمْ أَ نِّی مُمِدُّکُمْ بِأَلْفٍ مِنْ الْمَلَائِکَۃِ مُرْدِفِینَ۔} … “When you were seeking help from your Lord, so He responded to you and said: ‘I am going to reinforce you with a thousand angels, one following the other.’” Then, when the battle took place that day, Allah the Exalted defeated the polytheists. Seventy (70) of them were killed and seventy (70) were taken captive.
