Hadith 8589
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Amir Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that one of them was martyred in the battle of Autas. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: O Abu Amir! Why did you not change this evil (i.e., why did you not stop him from it)? In response, he recited this verse: {یَا أَ یُّہَا الَّذِینَ آمَنُوْا عَلَیْکُمْ أَ نْفُسَکُمْ لَا یَضُرُّکُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اہْتَدَیْتُمْ} … O you who have believed! Upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided. Upon hearing this, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry and said: Where have you gone? The meaning of this verse is that O believers! When you have become rightly guided, then the misguided disbelievers will not harm you.
Hadith 8590
Qais narrates that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and, after praising Allah Almighty, said: O people! You recite this verse: {یَا أَ یُّہَا الَّذِینَ آمَنُوْا عَلَیْکُمْ أَ نْفُسَکُمْ لَا یَضُرُّکُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اہْتَدَیْتُمْ} … O you who have believed! Upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided. While we heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that when people see evil and do not change it, it is near that Allah Almighty will afflict them with a general punishment. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Avoid lying, for lying is something different from faith.
