Hadith 8557
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that some people from among the Arabs came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah Munawwarah and accepted Islam. However, when they were afflicted by the epidemic of Madinah, that is, fever, they turned back and left Madinah. On the way, they met a group of the noble Companions who asked them: "What has happened to you, why are you returning?" They replied: "We have been struck by the epidemic of Madinah, and due to the city's climate not suiting us, we have developed an illness in our stomachs." The Muslims said: "Is there not an example for you in the person of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" Now, some Muslims said: "They have become hypocrites," while others said: "They have not become hypocrites, rather they are Muslims." So Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: {فَمَا لَکُمْ فِی الْمُنَافِقِینَ فِئَتَیْنِ وَاللّٰہُ أَرْکَسَہُمْ بِمَا کَسَبُوْا۔} ... "Then what is [the matter] with you [that you are] two groups concerning the hypocrites, while Allah has made them revert because of what they earned."
Hadith 8558
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out towards Uhud, the hypocrites who had set out with him turned back from the way. Because of them, the Companions were divided into two groups: one group thought that we should fight these hypocrites, while the other group was of the opinion that they should not be fought. Then this verse was revealed: {فَمَا لَکُمْ فِی الْمُنَافِقِینَ فِئَتَیْنِ وَاللّٰہُ أَ رْکَسَہُمْ بِمَا کَسَبُوْا۔} … Then what is [the matter] with you [that you are] two groups concerning the hypocrites, while Allah has made them revert because of what they earned. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This (city) is Tayyibah; it purifies sins just as fire removes the impurities of silver.
