Fath al-Rabbani

It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Ubada bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) received this verse: {وَالّٰتِیْیَاْتِیْنَ الْفَاحِشَۃَ مِنْ نِّسَایِکُمْ فَاسْتَشْہِدُوْا عَلَیْہِنَّ اَرْبَعَۃً مِّنْکُمْ فَاِنْ شَہِدُوْا فَاَمْسِکُوْھُنَّ فِی الْبُیُوْتِ حَتّٰییَتَوَفّٰیھُنَّ الْمَوْتُ اَوْ یَجْعَلَ اللّٰہُ لَھُنَّ سَبِیْلًا۔} … And those of your women who commit indecency, call to witness four from among you against them; then if they bear witness, confine them to the houses until death takes them or Allah appoints for them a way. (Surah An-Nisa: 15) So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) acted accordingly with the women. Then once, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting and we were gathered around him. When revelation would come to him, he would turn away from us, and this time too, he turned away from us and the color of his blessed face changed and he was distressed. When the state of revelation passed from him, he said: Receive the command from me. We said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! He said: Allah Almighty has made a way for women: when an unmarried man commits fornication with an unmarried woman, then one hundred lashes and one year of exile; and when a married man commits adultery with a married woman, then one hundred lashes and then stoning. Hasan, the narrator, says: I do not know whether this next part is part of the hadith or not: If people testify that this man and woman were found under one blanket, but do not testify to intercourse, then they will be given one hundred lashes and their heads will be shaved.
