What Has Been Reported Regarding Surah Al-Furqan
Hadith 8421
عَنِ الْمِسْوَرِ بْنِ مَخْرَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَعَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَبْدٍ الْقَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُمَا سَمِعَا عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ مَرَرْتُ بِهِشَامِ بْنِ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقْرَأُ سُورَةَ الْفُرْقَانِ فِي حَيَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَاسْتَمَعْتُ قِرَاءَتَهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ يَقْرَأُ عَلَى حُرُوفٍ كَثِيرَةٍ لَمْ يُقْرِئْنِيهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَكِدْتُ أَنْ أُسَاوِرَهُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَنَظَرْتُ حَتَّى سَلَّمَ فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ لَبَّبْتُهُ بِرِدَائِهِ فَقُلْتُ مَنْ أَقْرَأَكَ هَذِهِ السُّورَةَ الَّتِي تَقْرَؤُهَا قَالَ أَقْرَأَنِيهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ كَذَبْتَ فَوَاللَّهِ إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَهُوَ أَقْرَأَنِي هَذِهِ السُّورَةَ الَّتِي تَقْرَؤُهَا قَالَ فَانْطَلَقْتُ أَقُودُهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ هَذَا يَقْرَأُ سُورَةَ الْفُرْقَانِ عَلَى حُرُوفٍ لَمْ تُقْرِئْنِيهَا وَأَنْتَ أَقْرَأْتَنِي سُورَةَ الْفُرْقَانِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَرْسِلْهُ يَا عُمَرُ اقْرَأْ يَا هِشَامُ فَقَرَأَ عَلَيْهِ الْقِرَاءَةَ الَّتِي سَمِعْتُهُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ هَكَذَا أُنْزِلَتْ ثُمَّ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ اقْرَأْ يَا عُمَرُ فَقَرَأْتُ الْقِرَاءَةَ الَّتِي أَقْرَأَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ هَكَذَا أُنْزِلَتْ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ الْقُرْآنَ أُنْزِلَ عَلَى سَبْعَةِ أَحْرُفٍ فَاقْرَءُوا مِنْهُ مَا تَيَسَّرَ
Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I passed by Hisham bin Hakim bin Hizam while he was reciting Surah Al-Furqan. This was during the blessed life of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When I listened attentively to his recitation, I realized that he was reciting the Qur’an in a way that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had not taught me. I was about to rush towards him during the prayer, but I waited until he finished. When he completed the prayer with salam, I grabbed him by his cloak and said, “Who taught you this Surah?” He replied, “The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me.” I said, “You are lying.” Then I dragged him to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah! I have heard him recite Surah Al-Furqan in a way that you have not taught me.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Let him go, O Umar! O Hisham, recite.” He recited in the same way I had heard. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “This Surah was revealed in this way.” Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “O Umar! You recite.” So I recited in the way he (peace and blessings be upon him) had taught me. Upon hearing it, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “It was revealed in this way as well.” Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Indeed, the Noble Qur’an has been revealed in seven modes of recitation, so recite whatever is easy for you from them.”
Hadith 8422
وَعَنْ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِنَحْوِهِ وَفِيهِ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ يَا عُمَرُ إِنَّ الْقُرْآنَ كُلَّهُ صَوَابٌ مَا لَمْ يُجْعَلْ عَذَابٌ مَغْفِرَةً أَوْ مَغْفِرَةٌ عَذَابًا
Sayyiduna Abu Talhah Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated a similar hadith from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), except that at the end of it, it is mentioned: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Umar! The entire Qur'an is correct, as long as the word for punishment is not spoken in place of forgiveness, nor the word for forgiveness in place of punishment.
