بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي فَضْلِ اِسْتِمَاعِ الْقُرْآنِ وَالْبُكَاءِ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ ¤ بَابُ الْحَث عَلَى تَعَاهُدِ الْقُرْآنِ وَاسْتِدْكَارِهِ وَالنَّهْي عَنْ أَنْ يَقُولَ: نَسِيْتُ آيَةً كَذَا كَذَا
Chapter on What Has Been Reported Regarding the Virtue of Listening to the Qur’an and Weeping at That—Chapter on Encouraging Regular Review and Memorization of the Qur’an and the Prohibition of Saying: I Forgot Such-and-Such Verse
Hadith 8386
عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ لِي اقْرَأْ عَلَيَّ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ أَلَيْسَ مِنْكَ تَعَلَّمْتُهُ وَأَنْتَ تُقْرِئُنَا فَقَالَ إِنِّي أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَقَالَ اقْرَأْ عَلَيَّ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَلَيْسَ عَلَيْكَ أُنْزِلَ وَمِنْكَ تَعَلَّمْنَاهُ قَالَ بَلَى وَلَكِنِّي أُحِبُّ أَسْمَعُهُ مِنْ غَيْرِي
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: They said to me: Recite the Holy Qur'an to me. I said: Did I not learn the Holy Qur'an from you and did you not teach us? They said: One day I came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: Recite the Holy Qur'an to me. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Was it not revealed to you and did we not learn from you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, of course, but I like to hear it from others.
Hadith 8387
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ اقْرَأْ عَلَيَّ الْقُرْآنَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَيْفَ أَقْرَأُ عَلَيْكَ وَإِنَّمَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ إِنِّي أَشْتَهِي أَنْ أَسْمَعَهُ مِنْ غَيْرِي قَالَ فَافْتَتَحْتُ سُورَةَ النِّسَاءِ فَقَرَأْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمَّا بَلَغْتُ فَكَيْفَ إِذَا جِئْنَا مِنْ كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ بِشَهِيدٍ وَجِئْنَا بِكَ عَلَى هَؤُلَاءِ شَهِيدًا [سورة النساء: ٤١] قَالَ نَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ وَعَيْنَاهُ تَذْرِفَانِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: Recite the Holy Qur’an to me. I said: O Messenger of Allah! How can I recite it to you, while the Qur’an has been revealed to you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: My desire is that I hear it from others. So I began reciting Surah An-Nisa. When I reached this verse {فَکَیْفَ إِذَا جِئْنَا مِنْ کُلِّ أُمَّۃٍ بِشَہِیدٍ وَجِئْنَا بِکَ عَلَی ہَؤُلَاءِ شَہِیدًا} (What will be the condition when We bring a witness from every nation and, O Prophet, We bring you as a witness over all of them), I looked towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and tears were flowing from his eyes.
Hadith 8388
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنِ اسْتَمَعَ إِلَى آيَةٍ مِنْ كِتَابِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى كُتِبَ لَهُ حَسَنَةٌ مُضَاعَفَةٌ وَمَنْ تَلَاهَا كَانَتْ لَهُ نُورًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever listens attentively to one verse from the Book of Allah, his good deed will be written multiplied many times, and whoever recites it himself, it will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection.
Hadith 8389
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ بِئْسَمَا لِأَحَدِكُمْ أَوْ بِئْسَمَا لِأَحَدِهِمْ أَنْ يَقُولَ نَسِيتُ آيَةَ كَيْتَ وَكَيْتَ بَلْ هُوَ نُسِّيَ اسْتَذْكِرُوا الْقُرْآنَ فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَهُوَ أَشَدُّ تَفَصِّيًا مِنْ صُدُورِ الرِّجَالِ مِنَ النَّعَمِ مِنْ عُقُلِهَا ¤ (8389م) (وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَ تَعَاهَدُوا هَذِهِ الْمَصَاحِفَ وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ الْقُرْآنَ فَلَهُوَ أَشَدُّ تَفَصِّيًا مِنْ صُدُورِ الرِّجَالِ مِنَ النَّعَمِ مِنْ عُقُلِهِ قَالَ وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا يَقُلْ أَحَدُكُمْ إِنِّي نَسِيتُ آيَةَ كَيْتَ وَكَيْتَ بَلْ هُوَ نُسِّيَ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is a bad thing that a man should say: I have forgotten such-and-such verse. Rather, he should say: I have been made to forget it. Keep the Qur’an memorized, by the One in Whose hand is my soul! This Qur’an slips away from people’s hearts faster than a camel that breaks loose from its tether.
(Second chain) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Safeguard the Noble Qur’an, for this Qur’an slips away from people’s hearts faster than a camel that breaks loose from its tether. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: None of you should say: I have forgotten such-and-such verse, rather he should say: It has been made to be forgotten by me.
(Second chain) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Safeguard the Noble Qur’an, for this Qur’an slips away from people’s hearts faster than a camel that breaks loose from its tether. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: None of you should say: I have forgotten such-and-such verse, rather he should say: It has been made to be forgotten by me.
Hadith 8390
عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَحْوَهُ
Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) has also narrated a similar hadith from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 8391
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ مَثَلُ صَاحِبِ الْقُرْآنِ مَثَلُ صَاحِبِ الْإِبِلِ الْمُعَقَّلَةِ إِنْ عَقَلَهَا صَاحِبُهَا حَبَسَهَا وَإِنْ أَطْلَقَهَا ذَهَبَتْ ¤ (8391م) (وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَثَلُ الْقُرْآنِ إِذَا عَاهَدَ عَلَيْهِ صَاحِبُهُ فَقَرَأَهُ بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ كَمَثَلِ رَجُلٍ لَهُ إِبِلٌ فَإِنْ عَقَلَهَا حَفِظَهَا وَإِنْ أَطْلَقَ عُقُلَهَا ذَهَبَتْ وَكَذَلِكَ صَاحِبُ الْقُرْآنِ ¤
. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The example of the companion of the Qur'an is like the owner of a tied camel; if he keeps it tied, he will keep hold of it, and if he lets it loose, it will run away.
. (Second chain) The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The example of the Qur'an is that when its reciter takes care of it and recites it day and night, it will remain with him. This example is like that of a man who has camels; if he keeps them tied, he will keep hold of them, and if he lets them go, they will go away. This is the example of the companion of the Qur'an.

Hadith 8392
عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا مِنْ أَمِيرِ عَشَرَةٍ إِلَّا يُؤْتَى بِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مَغْلُولًا لَا يَفُكُّهُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ الْغُلِّ إِلَّا الْعَدْلُ وَمَا مِنْ رَجُلٍ قَرَأَ الْقُرْآنَ فَنَسِيَهُ إِلَّا لَقِيَ اللَّهَ يَوْمَ يَلْقَاهُ وَهُوَ أَجْذَمُ
Sayyiduna Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The leader and responsible person of ten people will come on the Day of Resurrection in such a state that he will be bound in iron (chains); the thing that will free him from this captivity will be his justice and fairness. And the person who, after reading the Noble Qur’an, forgets it, will meet Allah Almighty in such a state that his hand will be cut off (or afflicted with leprosy).
Hadith 8393
عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلَهُ
Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated a similar hadith from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
