Chapter on Moderation in Recitation to Avoid Boredom, and How Long It Takes to Complete the Qur’an
Hadith 8372
عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَدَّدَ آيَةً حَتَّى أَصْبَحَ
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept repeating a single verse until morning.
Hadith 8373
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فِي كَمْ أَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ قَالَ اقْرَأْهُ فِي كُلِّ شَهْرٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ إِنِّي أَقْوَى عَلَى أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ اقْرَأْهُ فِي خَمْسٍ وَعِشْرِينَ قُلْتُ إِنِّي أَقْوَى عَلَى أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ اقْرَأْهُ فِي عِشْرِينَ قَالَ قُلْتُ إِنِّي أَقْوَى عَلَى أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ اقْرَأْهُ فِي خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ قَالَ قُلْتُ إِنِّي أَقْوَى عَلَى أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ اقْرَأْهُ فِي سَبْعٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ إِنِّي أَقْوَى عَلَى أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ لَا يَفْقَهُهُ مَنْ يَقْرَؤُهُ فِي أَقَلَّ مِنْ ثَلَاثٍ
(Second Chain) It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr, may Allah be pleased with him, that I said: O Messenger of Allah! In how many days should I complete the recitation of the Qur'an? He said: Complete it in a month. I said: I have more strength. He said: Recite it in twenty-five days. I said: I have more strength. He said: Recite it in ten days. I said: I have more strength than that. He said: Complete the Qur'an in fifteen days. I said: I have more strength than that. He said: Recite it in seven days. I said: I have more strength than that. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever recites it in less than three days has not understood it."
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ جَمَعْتُ الْقُرْآنَ فَقَرَأْتُ بِهِ فِي كُلِّ لَيْلَةٍ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ إِنِّي أَخْشَى أَنْ يَطُولَ عَلَيْكَ زَمَانٌ أَنْ تَمَلَّ اقْرَأْهُ فِي كُلِّ شَهْرٍ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ دَعْنِي أَسْتَمْتِعُ مِنْ قُوَّتِي وَشَبَابِي قَالَ اقْرَأْهُ فِي كُلِّ عِشْرِينَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ دَعْنِي أَسْتَمْتِعُ مِنْ قُوَّتِي وَشَبَابِي قَالَ اقْرَأْهُ فِي كُلِّ عَشْرٍ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ دَعْنِي أَسْتَمْتِعْ مِنْ قُوَّتِي وَشَبَابِي قَالَ اقْرَأْهُ فِي كُلِّ سَبْعٍ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ دَعْنِي أَسْتَمْتِعْ مِنْ قُوَّتِي وَشَبَابِي فَأَبَى زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ فَاقْرَأْ فِي كُلِّ سَبْعٍ لَا تَزِيدَنَّ
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both), he says: I had memorized the Holy Qur’an and used to complete the recitation of the Qur’an every night. When this reached the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: I fear that when you live a long life, you will become weary, so complete the Qur’an once in a month. But I said: O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to benefit from my strength and youth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Complete it once in twenty days. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to benefit from my strength and youth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then complete it in ten days. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to benefit from my strength and youth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Complete it in seven days. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Leave me, let me benefit from my strength and youth, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) refused. In one narration, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Complete the Qur’an every seven days, but not in less than that.
(Second chain) It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that I said: O Messenger of Allah! In how many days should I complete the Qur’an? He said: Complete it every month. I said: I have more strength. He said: Complete it in twenty-five days. I said: I have more strength. He said: Complete it in twenty days. I said: I have more strength than that. He said: Complete the Qur’an in fifteen days. I said: I have more strength than that. He said: Complete it in seven days. I said: I have more strength than that. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever recites it in less than three days has not understood it.

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ جَمَعْتُ الْقُرْآنَ فَقَرَأْتُ بِهِ فِي كُلِّ لَيْلَةٍ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ إِنِّي أَخْشَى أَنْ يَطُولَ عَلَيْكَ زَمَانٌ أَنْ تَمَلَّ اقْرَأْهُ فِي كُلِّ شَهْرٍ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ دَعْنِي أَسْتَمْتِعُ مِنْ قُوَّتِي وَشَبَابِي قَالَ اقْرَأْهُ فِي كُلِّ عِشْرِينَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ دَعْنِي أَسْتَمْتِعُ مِنْ قُوَّتِي وَشَبَابِي قَالَ اقْرَأْهُ فِي كُلِّ عَشْرٍ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ دَعْنِي أَسْتَمْتِعْ مِنْ قُوَّتِي وَشَبَابِي قَالَ اقْرَأْهُ فِي كُلِّ سَبْعٍ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ دَعْنِي أَسْتَمْتِعْ مِنْ قُوَّتِي وَشَبَابِي فَأَبَى زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ فَاقْرَأْ فِي كُلِّ سَبْعٍ لَا تَزِيدَنَّ
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both), he says: I had memorized the Holy Qur’an and used to complete the recitation of the Qur’an every night. When this reached the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: I fear that when you live a long life, you will become weary, so complete the Qur’an once in a month. Leave me, let me benefit from my strength and youth, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) refused.
