Chapter on Seeking Permission Three Times, and If Not Granted, Then One Should Leave
Hadith 8300
عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ كُنْتُ فِي حَلْقَةٍ مِنْ حَلَقِ الْأَنْصَارِ فَجَاءَنَا أَبُو مُوسَى رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ كَأَنَّهُ مَذْعُورٌ فَقَالَ إِنَّ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ آتِيَهُ فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَاسْتَأْذَنْتُ ثَلَاثًا فَلَمْ يُؤْذَنْ لِي فَرَجَعْتُ وَقَدْ قَالَ ذَلِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنِ اسْتَأْذَنَ ثَلَاثًا فَلَمْ يُؤْذَنْ لَهُ فَلْيَرْجِعْ فَقَالَ لَتَجِيئَنَّ بِبَيِّنَةٍ عَلَى الَّذِي تَقُولُ وَإِلَّا أَوْجَعْتُكَ قَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ فَأَتَانَا أَبُو مُوسَى مَذْعُورًا أَوْ قَالَ فَزِعًا فَقَالَ أَسْتَشْهِدُكُمْ فَقَالَ أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ لَا يَقُومُ مَعَكَ إِلَّا أَصْغَرُ الْقَوْمِ قَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ وَكُنْتُ أَصْغَرَهُمْ فَقُمْتُ مَعَهُ وَشَهِدْتُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنِ اسْتَأْذَنَ ثَلَاثًا فَلَمْ يُؤْذَنْ لَهُ فَلْيَرْجِعْ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I was sitting in a gathering of the Ansar when Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us, and he seemed somewhat frightened. In fact, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had summoned him. So I went to him and sought permission three times, but when I was not granted permission, I turned back, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever seeks permission three times from someone and is not granted permission, then he should return. When I informed Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) of this hadith, he said: Bring proof of this, otherwise I will punish you. So I came to seek testimony. Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The youngest among us should stand with you for this. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was the youngest, so I stood up and testified that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever seeks permission three times and is not granted permission, then he should return.
Hadith 8301
عَنْ عَطَاءٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ أَبَا مُوسَى رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ اسْتَأْذَنَ عَلَى عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ فَلَمْ يُؤْذَنْ لَهُ فَرَجَعَ فَقَالَ أَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ صَوْتَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ آنِفًا قَالُوا بَلَى قَالَ فَاطْلُبُوهُ قَالَ فَطَلَبُوهُ فَدُعِيَ فَقَالَ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتَ قَالَ اسْتَأْذَنْتُ ثَلَاثًا فَلَمْ يُؤْذَنْ لِي فَرَجَعْتُ كُنَّا نُؤْمَرُ بِهَذَا فَقَالَ لَتَأْتِيَنَّ عَلَيْهِ بِالْبَيِّنَةِ أَوْ لَأَفْعَلَنَّ قَالَ فَأَتَى مَسْجِدًا أَوْ مَجْلِسًا لِلْأَنْصَارِ فَقَالُوا لَا يَشْهَدُ لَكَ إِلَّا أَصْغَرُنَا فَقَامَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيُّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَشَهِدَ لَهُ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ خَفِيَ هَذَا عَلَيَّ مِنْ أَمْرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَلْهَانِي عَنْهُ الصَّفْقُ بِالْأَسْوَاقِ
Ubaid bin Umair narrates that Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the house of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and sought permission to enter three times, but when permission was not granted, he turned back. Sayyiduna Umar said: Was I not just hearing the voice of Abu Musa Abdullah bin Qais? The household said: Yes, it was him. He said: Call him. So he was called. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: What made you do what you did? He said: I sought permission to enter three times, and when I was not granted permission, I turned back. This is the command we have been given. Sayyiduna Umar said: Bring proof for this, otherwise I will punish you. Sayyiduna Abu Musa went to the mosque or to the gathering of the Ansar and asked for a witness. They said: Our youngest servant will bear witness for you. So Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and bore witness for him. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had remained hidden from me; the trade in the markets has made us heedless.
Hadith 8302
عَنْ ثَابِتٍ الْبُنَانِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَوْ غَيْرِهِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ اسْتَأْذَنَ عَلَى سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ سَعْدٌ وَعَلَيْكَ السَّلَامُ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَلَمْ يُسْمِعِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى سَلَّمَ ثَلَاثًا وَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ سَعْدٌ ثَلَاثًا وَلَمْ يُسْمِعْهُ فَرَجَعَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَاتَّبَعَهُ سَعْدٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي مَا سَلَّمْتَ تَسْلِيمَةً إِلَّا هِيَ بِأُذُنِي وَلَقَدْ رَدَدْتُ عَلَيْكَ وَلَمْ أُسْمِعْكَ أَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ أَسْتَكْثِرَ مِنْ سَلَامِكَ وَمِنَ الْبَرَكَةِ ثُمَّ أَدْخَلَهُ الْبَيْتَ فَقَرَّبَ لَهُ زَبِيبًا فَأَكَلَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قَالَ أَكَلَ طَعَامَكُمُ الْأَبْرَارُ وَصَلَّتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَأَفْطَرَ عِنْدَكُمُ الصَّائِمُونَ
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sought permission to visit Sayyiduna Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: “Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah.” In response, he said, “And peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah,” but did not let the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) hear it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) greeted three times, and Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) also replied three times, but did not let the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) hear it. Eventually, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned back, and Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) followed behind and said: “O Messenger of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you, whenever you greeted, I replied, but did not let you hear it. In fact, I wanted to gain as much of your greeting and blessing as possible.” Then he took the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) into the house and presented dried dates before him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate, and when he finished, he made this supplication: “May the righteous eat your food, may the angels send blessings upon you, and may those who are fasting break their fast with you.”
Hadith 8303
عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِذَا أَتَى أَحَدُكُمْ حَائِطًا فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ فَلْيُنَادِ يَا صَاحِبَ الْحَائِطِ ثَلَاثًا فَإِنْ أَجَابَهُ وَإِلَّا فَلْيَأْكُلْ وَإِذَا مَرَّ أَحَدُكُمْ بِإِبِلٍ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَشْرَبَ مِنْ أَلْبَانِهَا فَلْيُنَادِ يَا صَاحِبَ الْإِبِلِ أَوْ يَا رَاعِيَ الْإِبِلِ فَإِنْ أَجَابَهُ وَإِلَّا فَلْيَشْرَبْ وَالضِّيَافَةُ ثَلَاثَةُ أَيَّامٍ فَمَا زَادَ فَهُوَ صَدَقَةٌ
. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any of you enters someone’s orchard and wishes to eat from there, he should call out: O owner of the orchard! He should call out three times. If the owner responds, then that is fine; otherwise, he may eat from the orchard. And when any of you passes by camels and wishes to drink the milk of the she-camels, he should call out: O owner of the camels! Or: O herder of the camels! If he responds, then that is correct; otherwise, he may milk and drink. Hospitality is for three days; anything beyond that is charity upon the guest.
Hadith 8304
عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا تَكَلَّمَ بِكَلِمَةٍ رَدَّدَهَا ثَلَاثًا وَإِذَا أَتَى قَوْمًا فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ ثَلَاثًا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas that when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, spoke, he would repeat his words three times, and similarly, when he greeted people with salam, he would say salam to them three times.
