بَابُ مَا يُقَالُ فِي رَدُ السَّلام عَلَى أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ
Chapter on What to Say in Replying to the Salam of the People of the Book
Hadith 8277
عَنْ أَبِي بَصْرَةَ الْغِفَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلَهُ
. Sayyiduna Abu Basrah Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the same manner.
Hadith 8278
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكَ الْيَهُودِيُّ فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ فَقُلْ وَعَلَيْكَ وَقَالَ مَرَّةً إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْيَهُودُ فَقُولُوا وَعَلَيْكُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When the Jews greet you, they say "As-Saam Alaikum" (death be upon you) instead of "As-Salaam Alaikum" (peace be upon you), so you should also reply with "Wa Alaikum" (and upon you).
Hadith 8279
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ فَقُولُوا وَعَلَيْكُمْ
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When the People of the Book greet you with salam, then in reply you should say, "Wa 'alaykum."
Hadith 8280
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا أَنَّ يَهُودِيًّا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ مَعَ أَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ الْقَوْمُ فَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قُلْتَ كَذَا وَكَذَا قَالَ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ فَقُولُوا عَلَيْكَ أَيْ عَلَيْكَ مَا قُلْتَ
Narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Jew came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was sitting with his companions, and he said: "As-Saam Alaikum (death be upon you)." The people replied to him, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Did you say such and such?" He said: "Yes." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any of the People of the Book greet you, then you should only say 'Alaika (upon you).' That is, whatever you said, the same be upon you."
Hadith 8281
عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَنَسًا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَلَا أَضْرِبُ عُنُقَهُ قَالَ لَا إِذَا سَلَّمُوا عَلَيْكُمْ فَقُولُوا وَعَلَيْكُمْ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: A man from among the People of the Book came and greeted the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "As-Saam ‘alaykum" (death be upon you). Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Shall I not strike off his neck? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, just when these people greet you, respond to them by saying: "Wa ‘alaykum" (and upon you).
Hadith 8282
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ الْيَهُودَ دَخَلُوا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالُوا السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا إِخْوَانَ الْقِرَدَةِ وَالْخَنَازِيرِ وَلَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ وَغَضَبُهُ فَقَالَ يَا عَائِشَةُ مَهْ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَمَا سَمِعْتَ مَا قَالُوا قَالَ أَوَمَا سَمِعْتِ مَا رَدَدْتُ عَلَيْهِمْ يَا عَائِشَةُ لَمْ يَدْخُلِ الرِّفْقُ فِي شَيْءٍ إِلَّا زَانَهُ وَلَمْ يُنْزَعْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا شَانَهُ زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الرِّفْقَ فِي الْأَمْرِ كُلِّهِ
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Jews came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Death be upon you." The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) also replied with the same words, saying: "Death be upon you." But Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O brothers of apes and swine! May death and destruction befall you, and may the curse and wrath of Allah descend upon you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Aisha! Stop." She said: "O Messenger of Allah! Did you not hear what they said?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Aisha! Did you not hear what I replied to them? Gentleness, wherever it is found, adorns it, and wherever gentleness is removed from something, it makes it defective." In another narration, it is stated: "Indeed, Allah loves gentleness in every matter."
Hadith 8283
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ دَخَلَ نَاسٌ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالُوا السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ عَلَيْكُمْ لَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ وَلَعْنَةُ اللَّاعِنِينَ قَالُوا مَا كَانَ أَبُوكِ فَحَّاشًا فَلَمَّا خَرَجُوا قَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا حَمَلَكِ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتِ قَالَتْ أَمَا سَمِعْتَ مَا قَالُوا قَالَ فَمَا رَأَيْتِنِي قُلْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ إِنَّهُمْ يُصِيبُهُمْ مَا أَقُولُ لَهُمْ وَلَا يُصِيبُنِي مَا قَالُوا لِي
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that some Jews came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "As-Saam-u Alaik" (death be upon you). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Alaikum" (upon you too). But Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Upon you be the curse of Allah, rather, the curse of all those who curse be upon you." They said: "O Aisha! Your father was not so harsh in speech." When they left, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): "What made you use such harsh words?" She said: "O Messenger of Allah! Did you not hear what those Jews said?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did you not see that I also replied 'Alaikum'? Whatever curse I invoke upon them will reach them, but whatever curse they invoke upon me will not reach me."
Hadith 8284
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ دَخَلَ يَهُودِيٌّ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعَلَيْكَ فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ فَهَمَمْتُ أَنْ أَتَكَلَّمَ فَعَلِمْتُ كَرَاهِيَةَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِذَلِكَ فَسَكَتُّ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ آخَرُ فَقَالَ السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ عَلَيْكَ فَهَمَمْتُ أَنْ أَتَكَلَّمَ فَعَلِمْتُ كَرَاهِيَةَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِذَلِكَ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ الثَّالِثُ فَقَالَ السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ فَلَمْ أَصْبِرْ حَتَّى قُلْتُ وَعَلَيْكَ السَّامُ وَغَضَبُ اللَّهِ وَلَعْنَتُهُ إِخْوَانَ الْقِرَدَةِ وَالْخَنَازِيرِ أَتُحَيُّونَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ بِمَا لَمْ يُحَيِّهِ اللَّهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْفُحْشَ وَلَا التَّفَحُّشَ قَالُوا قَوْلًا فَرَدَدْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ إِنَّ الْيَهُودَ قَوْمٌ حُسَدٌ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَا يَحْسُدُونَنَا عَلَى شَيْءٍ كَمَا يَحْسُدُونَنَا عَلَى السَّلَامِ وَعَلَى آمِينَ
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that a Jew came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said (instead of saying "As-salamu Alaikum"): "O Muhammad! As-samu Alaikum" (meaning: death and destruction be upon you). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Wa Alaika" (and upon you too). Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I wanted to say something, but I knew that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would dislike it, so I remained silent. Another Jew came and said: "As-samu Alaikum" (death and destruction be upon you). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wa Alaika" (and upon you too). This time as well, I wanted to say something, but due to the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) dislike, I remained silent. Then a third Jew came and said: "As-samu Alaikum." I could not remain patient and I spoke out: "O apes and swine! Destruction be upon you, may Allah's wrath and His curse be upon you. Do you wish to adopt the manner in which Allah did not send salutations upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah does not like foul language and obscenity. They (the Jews) said 'As-samu Alaika' and we also (avoiding foul language, simply replied with) 'Wa Alaika.' In fact, the Jews are a jealous people and do not envy us for any trait as much as they do for (our) greeting of peace and for saying Ameen."
Hadith 8285
عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ سَلَّمَ نَاسٌ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالُوا السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ فَقَالَ وَعَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا وَغَضِبَتْ أَلَمْ تَسْمَعْ مَا قَالُوا قَالَ بَلَى قَدْ سَمِعْتُ فَرَدَدْتُهَا عَلَيْهِمْ إِنَّا نُجَابُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا يُجَابُونَ عَلَيْنَا
Syedna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that some Jews, under the pretense of greeting, said to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): O Abu al-Qasim! As-Saam Alaika (death be upon you). He replied: Wa Alaikum (and upon you). Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said, while she was angry: O Messenger of Allah! Did you hear what they said? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, I heard, and I have replied to them. The fact is that our supplications against them are accepted, but their supplications against us are not accepted.
